Just thought I'd mention that Joe Rosenthal passed away today at 94.

Joe Rosenthal snapped the famous photograph of the flag raising atop Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, 23 February 1945.

Sorry, I thought most had known who he was.:oops:

I'm still somewhat unfamiliar where everything is located here in this forum. :oops: The general topics board? :hmm:

I guess I remember Joe Rosenthal and the photograph the most from having the honor of meeting one of the forty member platoon that went up Suribachi 23 February. Charles Lindberg (not the famous aviator). He's a Grand Forks native, now living in Minneapolis. One of the greatest days I'll always remember when was here fives years ago to dedicate the World War II memorial in East Grand Forks. I asked him to sign another photograph by Joe Rosenthal of that day in one of my books about Iwo Jima. Then I got a lump in my throat (and I'm sure some of the people standing nearby) as he paged through the book pointing out all of his friends in the platoon from that day as if it was last week. Including the six in the famous photogragh. All were his buddies.
Here's another name I'll throw out for research.:know: Commander Joseph F. Enright. A quick hint: He's from Parshall, North Dakota. Class? Anyone? Class?:know: He holds a world record. Class? Anyone?:know:

The flag in the Rosenthal picture was actually the 2nd flag raised over the mountain that day.

That is true. Most everyone at Iwo Jima remembers the first flag raising. I should have pointed that out. Thanks for bringing that to light!:up:

Joe Enright and his submarine Archerfish sank the carrier Shinano, of course, the largest warship sunk during the war. She was originally laid down as the third battleship of the Yamato class, and later converted to an aircraft carrier.

Great Iwo sites. Your seond Iwo site, second photo is the one Charles Lindberg signed in my book. From your first Iwo site. I'm looking at Lindberg as now the only living survivor of the platoon of that day.
