The first one is an ATI 9600 with 256MB RAM and 128-bit memory bus. The second one is a 9600SE (a castrated 9600) with 128MB and 64-bit memory bus. Never buy SE cards, they are much slower than the non-SE versions.
CompUSA offers a 9600XT ($79.98) which is quite a bit faster than the 9600:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=SEARCH&Ntt=9600&Pn=All%5FIn%5FWonder%5F2006%5FEdition%5FVideo%5FCa rd&N=0&Dx=mode+matchall&Ne=303827&Nty=1&D=9600&Ntk=All&product_code=310589&Pn=Xtasy_9600XT_Video_Card
Even better would be the 9800 Pro ($89.98), it only has 128MB, but thatīs enough for SH3:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=SEARCH&Ntt=9800&Pn=All%5FIn%5FWonder%5F2006%5FEdition%5FVideo%5FCa rd&Pn=Xtasy%5F9600XT%5FVideo%5FCard&N=0&Dx=mode+matchall&Ne=303827&Nty=1&D=9800&Ntk=All&product_code=302460&Pn=Radeon_9800_Pro_128_Video_Card
The 9800 Pro can even handle newer games quite well, the 9600 canīt. For SH3 the 9600 is good enough.

Buy a Radeon 9800pro.. it has only 128Mb Ram but the Radeon 9600 does not profit of this 256MB Ram!!! The 9800pro is 50% 70% faster than a 9600 and 9600SE!!

Yes, but the ATI 9800 Pro is faster and costs the same or a bit less.

Open the case and check the label on the power supply.

If itīs from a big PC maker like Dell or HP/Compaq write down the model type and number and post it here. Or check the invoice, maybe the power supply is mentioned there.

I couldnīt find any exact informations about the PSU. I found a site where they offer spare parts for the A1140N (a 420W PSU), but I doubt that the standard model actually uses such a big PSU.
Bad news: You canīt use AGP or PCI-Express cards, your PC has no such slots. Only PCI cards work and unfortunately there are no good PCI video cards. As far as I know the best PCI card is the Geforce 6200:
http://www.bfgtech.com/6200_256_PCI.html
Itīs a very low-end card, but SH3 will work.

sooooo im screwd on the ati :damn:.
willl the 6200 run sh3 as good as an ati and ive heard of errors in sh3 with the 6600 will that happen with the 6200?and could the 6200 run newer games?

I donīt know.
You said you have $150-200... Do you have a friend who knows about computers? If so let him replace your mainboard. A new one with AGP or PCI-Express costs about $40, then get a decent video card for $90-110. That video card would be many times faster than any PCI card out there.
Or contact HP, ask them if they have replacement boards with AGP or PCI-Express for your system and if they can replace it for you.
and could the 6200 run newer games?
Well, yes, but donīt expect a stellar performance. Itīs much slower than for example a 9800 Pro.

No, your CPU wouldnīt fit. You need a Socket 775 board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131542R
Thatīs one with PCI-Express instead of AGP. PCI-Express is a newer standard for video cards and also other cards.

200 bucks?
In that case you're begging for an X800 GTO!

i dont rate the GTO tbh if you were gonna go x800 go for the pro, oh and by the way the 9800pro isnt as fast the x700 pro which i have. the reason i know this is because my brother is a comp. technician and has a 9800 pro and we tested them using the overclock tool, the x700 has a higher core speed and roughly the same memory speed.

The AGP version of the GTO is 70 bucks cheaper than the Pro, so I'd definitely go for the GTO.

oh yeah sure it is but the performance difference is huge i would rather spend a bit more dosh for the better card, if i remember correctly the pro has like 16pipelines and the gto has like 8pipelines, it does have a higher core speed than the x700 but has the same amount of pipelines (x8) if you have the money go for the x800 pro if you dont and are on a tight budget go x700 the gto is ok but its only a bit better than the x700 and no where near as good as an x800 pro

oh and by the way the 9800pro isnt as fast the x700 pro which i have.
In your first post said you have a X700, not X700 Pro. The X700 Pro has an about 40% higher memory speed and a 5% higher core speed than the X700. Itīs not good to confuse product names when you recommend cards.
the reason i know this is because my brother is a comp. technician and has a 9800 pro and we tested them using the overclock tool, the x700 has a higher core speed and roughly the same memory speed.
You either misunderstood your brother or he doesnīt know very much about video cards. The X700 Pro has a 25% higher memory clock speed than the 9800 Pro, but the 9800 Pro has a 55% higher memory bandwidth thanks to its 256-bit memory bus. The X700 Pro has a 128-bit bus.
Look up some benchmarks, you will see that the 9800 Pro is faster than the X700 Pro in many situations. Not bad for a card that costs quite a bit less than the X700 Pro.

The GTO and Pro have 12 pipelines, the XL and XT 16.

i do apologize i do have the x700pro 256mb with 8pipelines etc etc, i have read many reviews on the GTO and the x800pro the x800pro im sure has x16pl but there are many versions of the x800 e.g XT, PRO, GTO blah blah my brother is a computer technician and knows loads about cards and loads of other stuff so i cant argue with him, my card IS better than his 9800pro no doubt, i can run games with full AA and AF where his cant to me that says mine is better than his
oh i just checked my core and memory speeds and i have 420 core and 300 mem,

Are you sure that it has 300MHz mem speed? Because thatīs the speed of the standard X700 model.

mmm maybe not it was a few days ago since i did check and im at work atm, i looked at the link you sent me and been goin through the pages mines the exact same as the hybrid sapphire x700pro i didnt know it was called a hybrid though but its the EXACT same same colour same specs everything

yup your right it does, musta got it wrong then im gonna check when i get home, i know its the sapphire version though coz i got a little sticker when i bought it lol it also says sapphire on the box, the cards fan too, it also says on the box 256mb pro so its definitly the pro version an sapphire, and i looked at the test they did on the link and the x700 is SLIGHTLY better than the 9800pro

The prices are falling on a lot of the ATI cards and should continue to do so as the new line comes out this month. Go for an X850 XT PE. Check on ebay and you'll likely get yourself a decent deal.
im to stupid to open it got another way?
If you're too stupid to open your case how do you propose we install your new video card? Should I call up Scotty to beam her in?:rotfl:

The 9800 pro is aging technology. Most would be happier spending a little more ($100 - $130) and getting a newer card.

I just got a BFG Geforce 6200 oc AGP card and it works good for SHIII, a week ago is was $99.95 at best buy. I get some good FPS 32-48 the lowest is 24-29
sometimes in the Periscope Room! I went on the cheap because I plan on getting
a new system in the winter of 2008. This is the only game I play . Because it is the
best!!!
I was at best buy tonight and there is a PNY 7600 oc 512MB AGP card, but I donnot
known anything thing about that card, BFG as 7600 oc 512MB AGP card out also.
the two cards are better than my BFG GEforce 600 oc AGP card I would like to see
what the FPS is with those two cards, both cards are less than $175.00:p :p
Say what type of grahics card will we need for SHIV, I hope I can use the same card!!!
