The ship on the left looks to be a Spruance class (DD-963) destroyer, and on the right, an Underway Replenishment Oiler - T-AO.
PS The picture is a bit odd in that the DD is really churning the water and the UREP isn't.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Looks like it may be a Prairie Masker System at work.

Fake photo! Doctored! Photoshop! Oh, the shame of it all!
No, you're right, it does look odd. The destroyer's bow isn't producing an abnormally large wake, so I'm guessing it's the dual props, possibly smaller and turning faster to maintain the same speed.
The Tanker is an AOR of the Wichita class, most probable AOR 2 Milwaukee.
The seven ships of this class were all decomissioned in the 90's and were the best Navy Tankers being 2nd in performance only to AOE's of the Sacramento class for a long time.

That is either a heavily modified foxtrot, or which makes more common sence to me an upgraded tango class, the sonar dome looks right for that so i definatly say tango the foxtrot is alot slimmer and also doesnt havea stubbed nose and has a sonar pod on the nose.
The tango Project 641B is alot fatter and has a stumpier bridge than the foxtrot so id say with 95% accuract its a modified tango.

OK to compair fish:
Here is a side view of the tango note the very low sail and the bluntish looking bow

here is a side view of a foxtrot notice the flash rear end tails on the sail is not on the tango, and then look at the bow it has no bulbous bow on the tango where as the foxtrot does, also the sonar dome on the foxtrot has never moved and has never changed its design much.

ok and here we have two tangos side by side the one on the right is modified to what i personaly call 641B1, notice the bow shape is diffrent, also in the picture you have a scrapeing of a bow of the foxtrot again a totaly diffrent shape, tango had many veriants as it wased used in many diffrent roles.

Did the russian government sell one of those to the us ?
How did a Foxtrot Diesel Sub finish along the Queen Mary in Long Beach ? :hmm:

Why is a part of the bow of a different color (more light colored with respect to the rest) ?
Is it a purely cosmetic thing or it has a purpose ?

The true colour is silver and its plated aluminium its to cover up and protect the bow sonars.
And the one at long beach san diego has been there for a long time, the russians have sold a few boats to the USA so far the USA has a foxtrot a julliet and a tranatul patrol craft or corvette.
Wouldnt surprise me if they buy a typhoon once they get rid of them.

So this part is actually less resistent than the rest of the hull. ? :hmm:

Wow, its a good way to capitalise on archaic subs. :p
The soviets turned out to be more capitalistic-oriented then the us. :rotfl:
Its definately NOT a Tango or a Foxtrot.

Yeah it's a foxtrot in Long Beach. They call it the Scorpion. In 1998, my car was towed home to Pasadena from Burbank airport by an Armenian guy who served aboard a Foxtrot that I tracked all over the Med in 1976. I asked him if he ever went down to Long Beach to see the sub for old times sake. He replied that he lived it for three years, he didn't need to be reminded of it again. So I gave him my copy of Blind Man's Bluff and he gave me his enlisted man's pin.
