On patrol I was notified of a lone merchant close by. I set up my approach for what I thought was going to be a successful attack and all of a sudden the sunk ship icon appeared on the nav map. I went up to the bridge and saw smoke on the horizon where the merchant should be. Did the merchant have some sort of accident and sink itself? Then again, perhaps there was another U-boat close by that got it first!

Could be the Flying Dutchman:rotfl:
Seriously if you've got a mod with wolfpacks or AI U-boats then it could have been that. Or another German surface ship, Or the Luftwaffe. All these guys will attack an enemy ship if it comes across it even if it is outgunned. I once saw an AI U-boat take on a taskforce with 3 light cruisers escorted by 6 DD's on the surface. I bugged out but my brave comrade karked it after about 3 salvoes from the TF.

new one on me I have heared of ships shinking by themselfs in rough weather but never seen a ship blow up by itself unless it hit a mine.
I've seen allied ships firing at each other :o and also seen a DD blow it's self up with a DC but never seen a merchant blow it's self up in calm weather.
Hadn't thought of a minefield. I assumed you were in open ocean. Were you insight of the ship when it went down?

I was on my third patrol October 1939 in the North Sea. I must admit the sea had turned a bit rough but in my opinion not so bad that it could sink a merchant. Even if the weather were responsible would you see lots of smoke as though the ship had blown up? I didn't actually see the ship sink, I was at the navigation station at the time and the contact icon just switched to the sunk ship icon and I went up to the bridge and saw lots of smoke on the horizon.

Just last week I came across a lone small merchant that was dead in the water and burning. It was still a good target, so I put it down. My guess for mine and the other guy was a mine.
What normally happens when the weather kills a ship is that is catches fire first, depending on the mods you have, where ther'e fire there's smoke:)
I've never seen anything larger than a Coastal Merchant/Tramp Steamer sink itself in bad weather. The Luftwaffe doesn't come out much when it rains so I doubt it was them.
Don's suppose you had saved just before you went after him? If you haven't progressed too fare you could always go back in time and take a look at him with the external camera and see who else is about.

I think it was a coastal merchant. So it would seem the weather might have played a part in it's demise after all. Unfortunately I didn't save just beforehand so it wouldn't be easy to go back and have another look.

It was an ammo ship and had a Dell Laptop on board.
Case Solved. :yep:
