View Full Version : Considering buying SHIII

I've heard alot about SHIII, and most of my questions have been answered by Neal's review. I know it's been out about a year, but hardly ever buy a game when they first come out.
I've played SH1 and still play SH2 in Atlantik.
But I do have a few questions:
First of all how stable is it?
I'm running:
XP Home
P4 2.8 GHz
1Gig DDR
GF4 Ti 4200 128 Meg (old, I know)
AC'97 onboard sound
plenty of HD space.
NEC DVD-RW Dual Layer
Second, I've heard about alot of problems with StarForce and DVD Burners. Is this problem wide-spread? I Used Engima:RT, but that was on my CD burner.
And are there any other issues I should look at before I go pick-up my copy?

Itīs generally quite stable, SH3 crashed maybe four or five times on my system and Iīve played it hundreds of hours. Just try not to "overmod" it! :)

No, itīs not a wide-spread problem. If you notice problems like slower CD/DVD burn times or disk recognition problems then you can try the SF driver update.

You might consider getting a sound blaster live pci card or some other one so you don't have to use the onboard sound memory ... I think you can pick up a new one for about 20 usd ... Since I bought one the sounds come in much better plus I don't hear static in some places such as several aircraft comming in all at once .........

I'm currently running an AMD 1.8g, with only 512 Ram- you should be just fine.
The DVD copy issue, I can't comment on, as I don't use it.

Some have reported Starforce problems. A poll taken some time ago showed the vast majority (myself included) having no trouble at all.
Adam, I can't believe after all this time you have yet to play SHIII. There's nothing that compares, and I personally wouldn't go back to any previous sub sim.
Stability tends to be a problem if you mod whilst not in harbour. othersie I've only had 3 CTD's in the last year of playing whilst in game. usually not long after my anit-virus program starts running a scan. Gotta change the schedule or change why I play at some time. Lots more CTD's while trying to get mods to work though.
I'm pretty happy with the GW1.1 with a couple of additional mods on top and so far so
good; up to my 9th patrol since installing and no crashes yet.

Yeah, I know. I've been busy with other things... and in my gaming life, about 2 months ago, I got Medal of Honor: War Chest, and MOH: Pacific Assault.:)
Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll be gettin a copy here soon. Now, I just need to know what mods I need or is recommeded

Oh boy.. that will get us started.
Once you have your copy be sure to get it patched. That's the most important thing.
As far as mods the easy thing to do is to install one of the supermods. That way you have a clean copy of a whole bunch of stuff. I use GrayWolves mod but there are other super packs you can look at.
I'll be gettin a copy here soon.

Don't mean to bash you but, with over 3,000 posts and the quality of your computer read the she-3 mods forum and spring for the 20 bucks and don't ask us to hold your hand to make a simple decision. Sorry for the hard reply "BUT BE A KALUEN":D
Definately try out the Grey Wolves or the NYGM mods. But on top of that SH3 Commander adds alot more to the game as well.
Don't forget the Mod Enabler (JSGME) to help add and remove mods from the game. This is not a requirement but for anyone trying out mods it is a time saver and helps prevent having to install and reinstall SH3 over and over again.

lol... Yeah... BTW, my PC is a piece of crap that I desided to put together one day... I need a new vid card.. this one is like 3 years old. Heck, while I'm at it, I'd better get one of those 4 GHz CPUs...
Anyways, I had heard that there was lots of problems (before patch I think... wait, there is a offical patch, right?) running the game, lot of CTD, ect.... And I have been busy with other stuff. Plus if you wait at least 6 months after a game comes out, you can play a patched game, plus great mods...
My SHIII should be here soon...

You'll still need to download the 1.4b patch; it's essential. After that, the mods.
Yes, some people have had crashing problems. This usually results from not reading the docs.
Adam, email sent to your other address you supplied. Plus I included the link to get the patch.... right fom Ubi. Last one on the page for US DVD is the one you want.
The only thing he needs now from us is a way to get the mods from UboatRealsim.
I have the one for skins right here.... http://patches.ubi.com/silent_hunter_3/

If you can bear the waiting time, just hold on until Silent Hunter IV is out. Maybe they even release some sort of "Silent Hunter anthology" with all the Silent Hunter games and expansions (and some crazy stuff like a Silent Hunter t-shirt/mouse-pad/plastic torpedo model scale 1:1/thong)?
My advice.
