Actually, I do the name changes free when there's a good reason. Avatars and ranks are donation items to give real can-do skippers some distinction.

I find it very confusing when people change their name. Almost impolite and not-done, therefore it needs a small punishment, like post count back to 0 or a small donation.

More seriously I think it's good that it's free to change nickname, most people have a good reason for it (most people :D). But I guess that donations are always nicely apritiated.
