Hey I finally picked up SH3 today but I'm having a problem when it comes to playing it...

I didn't realize it was a DVD-ROM which is a problem because my computer is a few years old and I didn't bother getting the DVD-ROM drive when I built it (back then people were only really using them to watch movies and they were pricey). I've upgraded since then but never really got around to the DVD drive.

But, I do have a newer laptop with a DVD burner combo, so I just shared that drive, stuck the DVD in the laptop, and then installed in on the desktop. I figured I was home free... until I tried to play it. Every time I try to run the program the stupid copy protection doesn't let me start it up. Is there any way I can play the game without having the DVD in the laptop, the drive shared, and the laptop running?

I don't like leaving the laptop on spinning the dvd drive all day because of heat issues...

Yes, but no "official" way. Use Google to find a fix.

Dont see the big problem would be with updating to a dvd drive, a pretty good DVD drive is about 20-25 bucks:)

I think I recall some issues arising from DVD combo drives with Starforce? Or am I just dreaming?

StarFarce denies any problems; but their new drivers seems to have fixed it. I think my DVD burner burns slower tho; it is supposed to burn at 16x but since I installed SHIII I get 8X tops.

No. Your laptop needs to be on to play Silent Hunter III (what a shameless smartass I am;)).
