Hi all!

I think it is time to share our stupid stories... Like crash diving in ports, blowing up tanks under surface ships and etc.

Could be worse...Bernard got onto my U-70 on my first career, and somehow managed to persuade the chief to let him near the surfacing controls...he surfaced us right in the middle of a British task force! Here we are, in the middle of the Med, grid CG-something, and we're stalking two British battleships (I was in my trusty IXB with six tubes, was going to put three torpedoes into each battleship), then all of a sudden, we break surface, and my IWO starts yelling "Warship spotted, close, moving fast!" I get up to the bridge, and the next thing i see is two BBs, six DDs, a CL, and a trio of MTBs. I yell down, "BERNARD!!!" and then we all got blasted to smithereens. :(

Now, the moment I see Bernard, I'm going to pop him in the back of the head with my Luger. If it weren't for his stupidity, I would've racked up 82,000 tons in a matter of minutes (probably would've been able to sink the light cruiser too).

Welcome aboard; but if you're going to ask something like that shouldn't you start with one of your own (especially when you said "our" stupid stories)?

Mine was just recently ... My flak gunners were having a ball dropping constant incomming Sunderland search planes .. every so often that little screen poped up saying " Aircraft spotted sir " which I always clicked " attack " or whatever it says ..
I was down below of course checking for any damage when I got that warning screen and didn't bother to read it.. Just clicked to have them attack it.... heard my deck gun going off and run up to the deck to see a destoyer bearing down on me about 2000 meters away firing like mad with my deck gunners all dead and one flak gunner wounded and about 30 % hull damage ..... I at least got away after a crash dive and some quick turns and decoys launched ............

Well, its surfacing incident with me also: stupid B. suggested surfacing in the middle of some port in England at dawn (after I fired all my fish into two T2s and two C2s) to finish rest of docked ships with a deck gun.... But I was almost instantly hit hard by shore turrets... Almost got killed, but managed to get out (H.I. <50%)...

Although my crew is always checked for Bernard,he somehow managed to slip in some time ago...i let him in charge of the command-room after i had just raided a port in England.Looks like Bernard had no ideea of the sub-nets in the area, and when he hit them he thought that a warship had fired on us ,and,he decided to crash-dive ,but he neglected to ask for the depth under the keel ,that was about 20 m ,so you might imagine what the result was. After we managed to get home, bernard took a long walk off a short pier.

Mine must be firing topedos at nothing. I keep hiting the Enter key to get out of time compression:oops: .
This is the way it's done in CAOD (still the best U-boat sim to date).
So I can imagine what this would be like in real life:

-Nice calm sea, in the middle of the Atlantic, all is quite-
Kaleun: ''Fire a torpedo.''
WO: ''Sir?''
Kaleun: '' yes, fire a torpedo now. ''
WO: '' But...errr...ok...''

I was in Dover, and was between a pier and a hard place, the entire fleet there was going nuts, but.....amazingly, that contact report i sent went through, and out of nowhere, the luftwaffe shows up...at this point, i have been depthcharged with the destroyer 5m above me... so i decide "The Royal Navy is concerned with the Luftwaffe, so ill do a 180 and surface and go flank." Of course, when i blew ballast, the 2 cruisers, 2 destroyers and anything else with something that goes boom aimed at me. To top it off, the Luftwaffe destroyed the Liner i was aming for......:damn:

Snuck into Lock Ewe in really bad weather... you know the type. Heavy rain & fog. I dont' remember the waves being really bad, probably because I'm in a harbor (at least they modeled that). It was also at night, so visibility was horrible.

I sighted this tanker just at the edge of my view range. Fired off one torpedo and dropped the 'scope (I'm being careful, since it's my first time in a harbor. Don't wanna mess this up ).

Bang. No "torpedo impact" from the crew :hmm:.

Fire off torp #2. Bang. Again, no torpedo imact notification.:stare:

#3. Bang.

#4. Bang. :nope:

Got out the external camera, then moved closer to the tanker. Hidden by the darkness and bad weather was one of those concrete docks. :damn:

I gave up and went back to port.

Stupidist thing ive ever done, was start a patrol, plot my course all the way to my patrol grid in the caribean, order ahead slow, scramble up to the the bridge, thinking to myself, "enjoy the view, its going to be a long time before i see port again". So there i sit, trying to enjoy the moment like one might have done back then when i normaly just TC myself out in map view, and then.....

I ran my boat aground leaving lorient docks. I had forgotten to tell the navigator to follow the course i had plotted.

Just started my second patrol leaving Willhelmslaven when my friends called so to impress them, I 'crash-dived' in the Harbour so they could hear the 'bells', 'whistles' and general kafuffle only to hit the bottom of the sea-bed with an almighty bang and the 'we're taking damage sir' whilst the Band on the quayside played merrily away. Needless to say, with a red face, I tried to talk my way out of this embarassing situation !

Not really silly, but had a weird experience today, while playing the "Scapa Flow" Mission.

Snuck into the basin OK, past most of the waiting escorts, when I got spotted by a Hunt 1 DD that I'd missed. I played "cat & mouse" with him for about 10 minutes, suffering only a little repairable damage, when the rest of his buddies arrived. 3 flowers, 2 Armed Trawlers, and the Hunt 1.!!!:o
Next thing I know, all hell has broken out above the waves, while I keep popping my scope up for a look (I was playing 100% real, with no external camera). I fired a couple of hopeful torps in the general direction of the DD, but missed. Then I started hearing big explosions. Thinking I was about to be blasted out of existence, I stuck up the scope for another last look at what was going on, and guess what........the DD has only been blasting away at me with his guns, but his aim is totally crap, and he's only succeeeded in hitting 2 of the Flowers and both armed Trawlers, that were circling round me!!!! They were burning like November 5th!!
I think he must have been firing at roughly where my scope had popped up, but his gunners needed a LOT more Training!!!

I bet the Admiral was p*ssed when he got back in!!!

(btw.....I finally got rammed by the last of the Flowers and won a nice shiny Black screen with lovely orange writing!!! )

cheers

Bernard just loves to play with my ballast tanks. More than once he surfaced me under a marauding DD. A few times he brought me up in the middle of an attack by B-24s and Sunderlands. Once he brought me up dead center of a TF of 4 cruisers and a Bogue. Most of them I can walk away from, but the TF one killed me, but not before I got a lucky torp hit off on the Bogue:) Don't know if it sank or not, since I got killed before it told me, but it was listing.

Was finishing up a succesful (i.e.lucky) patrol (with GW+Uwac) in norway and was in the fijords near narvik. taskforces and troopship convoys had been coming and going there for the last few days and i was out of torps. noticed a small TF of german destroyers shelling it out with an english TF including a fiji cruiser.

Bernard figured our little sub wouldn't draw to much attention next to our surface brethen so he popped us up and went to the deck gun to get us into some coordinated fleet action. didn't help that he popped us up between the two lines. next thing i know, bernard is happily leading the gun crew in shelling a already damaged german dd while the whole english TF turns their guns un us:damn: . a short while later were on the bottom of the fijord (external cam shows us resting close by the german dd we finished off ) with massive flooding, no engine, and no compressed air.

I really enjoy my deck gun, and if I may say so, im pretty darn good with it. I take on the ships one size down fromt the destroyers with it, by blasting their forward turrets off at about 4k out. However, my downfall was that I forgot all about the fact that they can still ram you, and they still have machine guns and depth charges. So im merrily blasting away at my second corvette (Ah, theres the name of em), while the first one is charging full speed into my conning tower. Ouch...

From the records of the capture of U977

After loading provisions, celebrating May Day, and holding a flag ceremony for Hitler’s reported death, U-977 left Kristiansand on her first and last war patrol 2 May 1945 at 2200. Using her Schnorchel 3 to 4 hours each night she proceeded submerged along the Norwegian coast. On 7 May the observation periscope was damaged due to its being left up while diving.

Dont know if this counts as stupid or just bad luck. Attacked a convoy at night. Sank one large tanker and damaged a couple merchies. Went to about 50m to reload tubes while the Escorts hammered away at me. Now keep in mind, I try not to use the map view when evading escorts but prefere instead to stay in the control room and have my sonarman keep me informed. I was taking a swirl on the hydrophones myself, Escorts are close but not too close, then ..... blammo! "Whe're taking damage sir!" Batteries shot, electric engines down, flooding in 3 compartments. I sank to the bottom where I made enough noise that the Escorts pounded me into oblivion. All the while going WTF??? Just before the screen of death I checked the outside view, and sure enough, I had managed to manuver myself around and ram right into the sinking tanker. :dead:

My most recent debacle was a daylight surface run in Sept 1939 through the channel. About an hour and half from Dover the balloon went up (GER Invades POL etc etc.), and half the british fleet is sitting just outside Dover. I didn't see the green go red until it was too late!

I was showing a my cousin the Silent Hunter III so he could possibly get into the game. I was playing the Bismark mission and i was at periscope depth for about 10 minutes. I proceded to show him the basic method of setting up my attack run and was telling him about what was happening on the surface above me. I explained to him that we had to protect the Bismark and sink the British Capital ships. So I perfectly lined up my shots and fired 4 torps at a straggling battleship. All 4 hit. I yelled out, "Take that Churchill!" However my estatic feelings were squandered when my cousin said, "You're German right?" I said, "Well yeah." And i looked at external view (for the first time in the mission) and found that the battleship that I had torpedoed and sunk was the Bismark. lol

Got 2 more tails here, just happened a few hours ago.
First-I was attacking Hartlepool in early 39' after a fruitless patrol in GW.
As you proably know ,like in NYGM ,there's a lonely Large Cargo ship there ,sitting a few meters outside port, pefectly sitting there for a broad-side:arrgh!:
So,i went in un-detected,silent-running at about 2 knots, periscope depth.I got within about 4k meters and started making measurments in the TDC.Got ship type(Gee I wonder if that's a little tanker or tramp steamer -hmm...) ,range ,speed(that was also hard he was going so fast I barely got lock on him:D )bla bla bla.Set torp to impact,3 meters straight for the front cargo hold since she carried ammo and blowing that up would result in a nice coulourfull and noisy explosion. So,torp fired, bang direct hit-but no big boom. After the boom, all the lights in the harbour lit up onto my surrouding area(note that it was night).Ok,so,I had 2 electric torps in the 4th and 3rd tube,so i fired them both at the same time ,a little degrees off one from the other. Then i went to the exterior view and followed the torps on their way.One bounced off the hull and the other one blew up the rear-cargo hold, and the ship started sinking. So,i just sat there waiting for it to sink.Made TC 32x and just waited .The ship was slowly sinking, and suddenly "SIR WE HAVE CRICIAL FLOODING!" "WE'RE TAKING DAMAGE!" MEDIIIIIIC!".I pressed f12 to see the exact position of my ship-I thought we were being DC'd or something...anyway-so i pressed f12 and to my surprise the camera was moved above the sinking cargo.I pressed it about 5 more times because I thought it was a bug or something, then i looked under the ship and surprise-I had forgotten to go to full stop and my coning-tower had a close-up meeting with the ship...:damn: I managed to get out with 56 percent hull and about 10 dead crew-men...
And the second "tail" -happened on a rather old patrol -I was crusing twards my assigned patrol sector -AM23 .When somewhere in the middle of the AN area (between England and Norway) ,while changing my crew's positions a bit-suddenly-BANG CRASH CRASH SCREETCH CRACK I was so scared-thought that an english DD had fired on us .Out of reflex-I pressed crash-dive,and remember d to late that depth under keel was about 30 meters...Turns out I had collided with a neutral merchant my crew had neglected to report.:ping:

I once torpedoed a ship in a convoy then decided to get moving away from the shooting area. I set a new course to travel under the convoy then ordered flank speed and a depth of 30 or 40 meters to avoid ship's keels. I get a gut feeling that I should change course because the danger of ramming a sinking ship while it's on it's way to the bottom. I do nothing because ships don't sink that fast, right? The gut feeling is strong & I still do nothing. Not long after we ram something I assume (no external camera) taking massive damage & flooding then the death screen.

A 1st patrol in a career I had played was Nov. '39 north of England returning home I decided to confidently fight it out with a plane, it drops a bomb on each side of the sub causing fatal flooding. I no longer fight planes after that incident.

I had read about the exploits of others fighting it out with Elco boats. I decided I was going to try my hand at it & have some fun. We are firing away all the while the Elco is machine gunning and speeding towards us. My flak gunner, deckgun crew and IWO is killed by machine gun fire. The IWO had been with me for 10+ patrols with watchman, flak & deckgun qualifications. Flakgunner and deckcrew had qualifications as well. I no longer engage Elco boats after that.

I don't know if it's strange or not, but still I haven't done anything more stupid... yet.

It was my 7th or 8th patrol, maybe later. I don't know exactly. Year 1943. I transferred to the 10th Flotilla. First patrol beginning in La Spezia. On my way to the patrol sector I had to survive the Gibraltar Strait.
When I was in the middle of it, at the depth of about 20 m, I started to run out of oxygen. I ordered periscope depth and took a look around if there's any warship in the eyesight (hydro detected lots of them, but I hoped they're far enough to leave us alone, so we'd surface and catch some fresh air before submerging again). That was the day I met Bernard - still I don't know why I let him operate the hydrophone. He noticed all the warships but one V&W destroyer.
It was daytime, so they couldn't miss our periscope from a 200 m distance, especially when they were just trying to ram us at full speed.
Maybe it wasn't the best place to crash-dive, but I saw no other solution. And then... Well, that nervous habit of hitting wrong keys in hard situations was the last thing I needed.

Has anyone here ever managed to survive without the conning tower?... :smug:

(I tried Gibraltar once again and everything was OK, so in a few days I'll try Scapa Flow. Possibly after that one I'll have to write sth again in this thread... )

One of the first "mods" I did (before GW) was to change that key setting.

I mean cmon fire torpedo key right next to one of the most used keys in the game (time compression).

In an earlier post I mentioned I fired off three torps while still in the mooring trying to get the full screen view ( Keypad delete/. key)

I guess Bernard must be working with Ubisoft. Must be him who decided to use the Enter key to fire a torpedo. Cost me a lot of torpedoes that one.

One of the first "mods" I did (before GW) was to change that key setting.

I mean cmon fire torpedo key right next to one of the most used keys in the game (time compression).

In an earlier post I mentioned I fired off three torps while still in the mooring trying to get the full screen view ( Keypad delete/. key)

You know the funny thing was back when I was playing vanilla I sunk at least 5 ships just by accidently hitting the enter key......:hmm:

So I was a green captain out on my first patrol. Sunny skies, smooth sailing, so I left Bernard in charge. We come up on a lone merchant, and decide to take him out the deck gun. Bernard manuevers alongside: me -> || <- merch and sinks him. The explosion sinks me too.

Well, when I first started making vids from SH3 I had assigned the "v" button to fraps. Its safe to say I crashdived alot back then.

I once tried to take a screenshot but hit 'Shift F11' instead of 'Control F11'. Talk about slow FPS-it turned into a photo album. I had to Alt-Tab out of the game and figure out how to make it stop, then I ended up with about 50 screenshots in my folder, all of them taken 1/10 second apart.:damn: :rotfl:

going throught english channel (a big no-no anyway) and getting attacked by 3 or 4 warships, so instinctively i press crash dive. In about 20 metres of water.

I was rammed by a completely lone C3 in the middle of the sea. On the surface after 10 min of trailing it.... It can happen:rock:

I got greedy last night and went after a convoy in Feb43 :damn: dive plane smashed could only travel in a strait line, those destroyers never had it so easy. I should had settled on the two ships I found but no I had to chase that convoy. The times I have done that.:damn: :damn: :damn:

I keep managing to hit the seawalls that stick out into the Kiel canal.

I know where they are, and each time I get near there I manage to be afk just long enough for the boat to slam into it bow first and then slide down the wall.

First time I played SH3 I messed with the rudder controls and proceeded to christen U-50 by grinding her hull down the side of the Kiel docks as nurses dropped flowers and the band played. :arrgh!:

Accidently sank a blockade runner in port via the badly placed enter button, I eventually pried the numpad enter off of the keyboard.

When I first started playing SH3 I would get incredibly high tonnage values (80k a patrol) because I abide by the doctrine of 'unrestricted submarine warfare' and sink everything that I could find (except axis boats) departing/returning from Kiel.

More recently:

I hit the damn seawall in the Kiel Canal again, this time at night...:damn:

Collided with a returning U-boat leaving Wilemshaven in a storm at night...

Almost rammed by a cargo vessel in a convoy because I was too concerned with getting a dead set 1 shot kill with the forward tubes that I forgot I was WITHIN the convoy and that there was a ship line behind me.

Crash Dived to avoid enemy planes leaving Lorient in a 1944 campaign....in 16 meter water.

When I started playing I had no idea lock-on inputed everything in the TDC, so I made random guesses and shot my torpedos at a random spot in the path of a ship and hoped it hit.

I felt like the coolest person on earth whenever I sank something

I'm also very clumsy when it comes to hotkeys, so I always end up shooting torpedos at nothing and stuff like that.

Edit the basic.cfg file. The hot-key for torpedo-firing is in there someplace.

Oh my God, Bernard is in the Romanian Dev Team!

So I was entering that infamous "mini-English Channel" between England/Scottland and Ireland, and one of those cute little Armed Trawlers spotted me. I was outrunning it easy as Heck, and pretty soon lost it in the fog (it was also dark and rainy and altogether quite terrible vision-wise).

Some time later I spotted a medium-sized merchant. I decided to attack it, and shortly after I spot a search-light behind me. The merchant is partially in-between me and it, so I can't identify the new ship with the UZO, but I assume it's my friend the armed ex-fishing boat again. I decide to give up the attack on the merchant - the water's shallow and a trawler's just not worth scrapping with. I go to flank speed away from there and switch to the map, setting time compression to maximum.

Shortly after I'm dead from artillery fire, ramming, and depth-charges. It was not my friend the trawler in the fog. It was ein Verdamte Zestörer:damn:!

Remember, kids: Destroyers and trawlers may have the same search-lights, but one's significantly faster and stronger than the other:lol:!

Did the classic "Crash-Dive-in-shallow-water" today.

After that Bernard was standing next to me when chasing 2 merchants. When I spotted the US flag Bernard whispered in my ear that they were enemies so I fired some torps. After seeing 2 green "ship-sunk" marks on my map I compared the current date and the date when America entered the war

Who says Blackout dicipline isn't required?

I was motoring to close in on a small canvoy, still about 6km away.

Bright clear calm night, lookout calling contacts as they close. Me clicking "Maintain orders".... We've got time for a quick smoke, right?

One of those contacts was a verry annoyed V&W.

From astern. At 36 kts.

At least we went quick, and didn't have to sink 1000m.

It was about midnight (real and game time) June 1940 and I have a C2 crippled and listing, but it refuses to sink. So I bring the boat in close on her starboard side and open up with the deck gun.

Suddenly my watchman starts yelling that we're under attack. I take a quick look around, but there isn't anything in the vicinity, so I figure that it's lack of caffiene on his part and content myself with blasting away at this stubborn C2.

The watchmen yells out again that we're under attack, and I continue to ignore him. "Must be a bug", says I. He continues to yell, and I ignore him. Thought I heard a big splash behind us, but figured that was just an errant wave.

Finally the C2 settles by the stern to reveal a destroyer bearing down straight at us, searchlight blinding. I know that I'm dead to rights, so I order the deck gun crew to fire. They take out the destroyer's searchlight on the first round and the forward battery on the second. I start to think "Hey, I just might pull this off and surive!" when I realized that my boat wasn't moving and that despite not having any forward armament, a destroyer bearing down at 34 knots can still be dangerous.

Rammed. Sunk. Kaput.
