Last night while I was stalking a convoy I made a save when submerged on periscope depth. I had multiple ship contacts on the sonar and I was waiting for the first victim to reveal itself from under the cover of the fog.

I got hungry so I saved again and went to grab some BK. Well than it happened I came back and loaded up the game….

Disaster… the second the game loaded up my boat took a dive to 503 meters at speed of 123 knots. I did not get crushed by the water pressure or the boat was damaged by slaming in to the ocean floor. I lost control over the u-boat and was unable to surface. The ship got stuck to the bottom of the ocean floor. Well my brave lookouts were still stationed on the deck so I went to check how they doing at 500m below (for a second I felt like Jaque Custoe).

So I tried to load up the previous save just before I sunk a small convoy of two ships(about day and half before gettin in to attack positoin for the big convoy).
Well guess what happen? The same exact thing, but I was able to return to port by exiting the patrol. What was interesting enough was that I got the 12000 tonnage score for the ships that I did not sink yet(the small convoy)… The save games got corrupt and screw every thing around, but I was able to save 8 months of my career. I started new patrol in a new grid and every thing worked out just fine.

Did any of you sea dogs encounter such a situation?

This is a stock SH3 bug. Never save games while submerged or in ports.

Yep. Happened to me more than a few times awhile ago. In my case I was using SH3 Weather and I would generate weather before I stated the game each time. This was when the program first appeared and I was using it incorrectly. SH3 Weather generator affects certain files and should not be used "mid-patrol". Once I began using it only at the start of a fresh patrol the problem stopped. Now that SH3 Commander 2.6 automatically fires up SH3 Weather it makes life a lot easier.Don't know if this helps but...

I've saved underwater hundreds of times and not had a problem. Both with standard SHIII and latterly the Grey Wolves mod.

I havent personaly but ive heard about it before. If it happened i would probably roll back to the last time i was in port.

When you reload a game, the ship AI sometimes does funky things. This is an old play-balance trick. Silent Service 2 would do the same thing.

I've reloaded on convoys and had ships jackknife right in the middle, holding up the rest of the column, Which *totally* works out for me, every single time -- stationary targets are awesome, and three in a row is the most awesomest of all!:rotfl:

There are also bugs with the external camera that can cause severe havok with your boat.

Well the problem i encoutered was very weird and unusual. Every time I loaed up the game. Game showed the last sinking of the ship even tho it was on the bottom of the ocean for 10 hrs(game time) and than my boat took a dive to 503 meters and i was unable to control it.

I seemed to get this same behavior about 1 out of 10 times I tried to load a save game that was saved while I was submerged. I don't ever remember it happening during my first month or so of playing SH3. I do not save when submerged anymore and I no longer have the problem (the few times I am forced to save while submerged...I pray for the best). Nothing was more disconcerting than the first time I saw this happen. I saved while submerged after a great attack on a convoy....I had just sunk two tankers and a C2...I was tired and needed to get some sleep...I saved. I started it up again the next day and all of a sudden I am in a steep dive at some 200+ knots. Only minor damage was done (took about 10% hull damamge and lots of broken glass). I was then stuck 500+ meters down, blowing ballast, everything I tried would not help. Finally went back to an older save...prior to the convoy...I was not a happy man.

Had this happen to me, too, same symptoms. Really fast dive all the way to the bottom. Funny thing was, I was surfaced when I saved. I'd load the game, and within the first second I went from being on the surface to submerged, heading for the depths.

I did manage to hit the crew screen on one of my reloads as I was heading for the ocean floor. I had no crew. Not a single sailor listed on the screen.

I verified this through SH3Commander. Opened it up, went to the crew management screen, and same thing... no crew.

I wonder what happens to the crew efficiency when there's no crew on board... and how that's linked to the buoyancy of the uboat.

I think i might know the answers to the problem we have encountered.....

The ghosts of the dead crew from the ships we have sunk took vengance on us and asked Neptune to play a faul trick on our boats...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

It's fascinating how wisespread this bug is yet in everyone of the patches put out by the devs it wasn't addressed. And of course they stopped patching with this bug still present. So seems a bit odd. Even with the stock game unmodded and unpatched I never seemed to encounter any serious issues, at least none that seemed to be worse than this one that seems to have a new thread about it every week or so. So why didnt they address this one issue that would likely have shown up at least a few times in the beta period?

hmm what I think might be the problem is the repetitive use of two same save files. I use 2 save files to which I’m recording state of the game through out the patrol. By doing it over and over the save file some how corrupt and it did what it did. I think that’s one of the logical explanations.
