View Full Version : Destroyers destroying themselves
I sneaked into Freetown and so a whole gamut of ships just awaiting my torps. I hit a couple and was waiting for reloads when a destroyer came sniffing me out.
It went forward towards one of the boat pens when it hit the side and burst into flame. It reversed out and then went further down and reversed into and imbedded itself into the pier ha ha ha, this then gave me the opportunity to sink the rest of the ships at my leisure.
Anyone else experienced this?

Not this exactly, but once when I was attacking a convoy the merchants just went loopy and lost all sense of direction and started to collide with each other. I must admit I think what caused it was the save game bug that has been mentioned before in this forum. I saved when very close to the convoy and when I reloaded thats when things started going crazy.

yes especially in harbours the dds come looking for you and get all lost and confused and end up crahing into their own ships funny actually:D

Bad AI, I mean sheesh you can be leaving port and ships will actually move out of your way if on a collision course, But go inside an enemy harbour and DD's just charge you in a straight line thinking that they can gate crash a 15' wall???:damn:
Stooopid really it's this behavior like that actually takes the fun, adrenaline effect from actually going into harbours and trying to sink enemy shipping, if a dd sniffs you just get a harbour wall between you and it.....Game over...you can now sink everything in sight, and the bloody stoopid DD as well as it ain't going no where fast anymore. Now if they really could stand off a little or even NOT collide with walls well that's another story.....Now you have to think is it worth it!!!!
It's AI behaviour like this which now stops me from entering harbours even if that part is actually a tense time, cos once your in you can fool DD's no end into jammin, rammin and burning themselves to bits.:rotfl:

Ya they also love to run themselves aground too. Though not as much as in SH2 at least
As for friendly ships avoiding ramming you, ive never seen that myself. Those damn schnel boats are always buzzing me and coming with in feet of raming me. Once or twice (though you didnt hear this from me) ive even opened fire on them for ramming me.
The one bug with the AI though that realy gets anoying is when 2 ships on the same side (even same country) suddenly decide they both dont like each other and open up with everything till one gets sunk. Ive had that happen with convoys alot where they are attacking me then one ticks off the other and they drop the gloves and go at it and forget about me.

I've had a destroyer go THROUGH an outer harbour wall before - I suceeded in beating it into the harbour and so I hid behind the outer wall (the ones with lighthouses on them). But the destroyer sailed straight through it and hit & sunk me. Very unfair!!! :(

If he went over the wall to get you he earned that kill. I had on get hung cross ways of a boat slip. Ive also I a cruiser sink his own DD and armed trawler.

Yeah, going into ports with a seawall can really be a massive boon. If you can dock inside one of the berths, submerged, you can fire torpedoes and wait for the escorts to beach themselves if you're detected.
It's like that t-shirt with the frog and the stork. Those escorts have NO FEAR! of that sandbar. Just run that sucker right up there on the beach so's you can have a nice clear view.
The AI doesn't do well in the navigation department.

Just last night I was near Iceland, so I snuck into the harbor there. I managed to get in pretty close when a Flower Corvette detected me. I was 5 KM away, behind a peninsula, silent running at 1 knot. Anyway, he charged right in and nearly grounded himself.
It sort of evens out the fact that you can't fool thier ASDIC by being near the shore. But I was clearly playing the AI and not a simulation at that point.
I managed to carefully reverse out of the cove I was in and get a tube on him. When his buddy showed up, I was close to the sea-wall and he got hung up on that.
Later I had my periscope up. There was a C Class destroyer and a nuetral American Clemson in the harbor. The C class opened fire on my periscope. Hit the Yanks and "awoke the sleeping giant." The C class was sunk pretty fast.
I also found it odd that none of the fully maned warships in the harbor could fire up the engines and come after me. The Dido was pinging me even as I crossed in front of it.
It was sort of a disapointing raid. The tankers were all American in July 1941, so I eneded up with 2 destroyers, 3 medium merchants and 3 fishing boats. I didn't get credit for the corvettes that sunk themselves.

What's even better is that if there's something between them and you, they still shoot. It could be a brick wall, a mountain, or a neutral Red Cross hospital ship full of wounded. They don't care. It's in the way, so sink it - your fault for hiding behind innocents;).
Not to mention how, as was "said", detection equipment works through solid rock.

I agree with you both mates, recently, I was on a patrol, near Dover, very close to the harbour and laying in the bottom of the sea. I cannot understand how, the destroyer could detect me with active sonar!!. How can she detect me and not get confused with the ocean floor!!. Clearly, active sonar is not well recreated in the sim. (and as you said, it can pass through rock!!! , arghhhhh!! lol )
About pasive sonar, I agree with Redwine in that it must be reduced the angle in which the ship can detect you in the way it comes the sim cames out of the box.
If not its tooooo efective!!
The hole bug with the destroyers happened to me also in the harbours, very funny at the beggining, but, as someone said, it takes out the all the fun at the end :(.
See you soon:up:
