View Full Version : What a game!

I'm in a 1942 campaign piloting a IXC down the north Amercian coast, after taking out a few merchants along the way. I'm trying to recharge the batts at night, but a pesty bomber keeps spoiling it. Headed towards the Florida coast I'm far enough out at sea that not much is going on, but as I get closer the planes get more numerous. The sea is stormy, so all I can do is crash dive when attacked. This continues into the day as a cat and mouse game transpires, trying to surface to recharge then dive when attacked.
Finally the storm starts to subside; winds down to 9 mps, then to 4, then to 0, sky is clear. The ocean's like glass - a perfect day for shooting planes! I send up a watch officer and a couple flak gunners and wait. Then there's the heartbeat-increasing screen "aircraft spotted": engage target! I man (err, woman) one of the flak guns and my fellow gunner and I take pot shots at three enemy aircraft. All three are hit, trailing fire and smoke! None are damaged enough to crash, but they turn tail and head away! Take that!!
I know they'll be back with their buddies and, sure enough, in 45 mins. there are five planes charging at us! Again, I pepper them with the flak guns, as DCs explode around us and machine gun fire strafes the water almost hitting the flak gunner! "Flak gun damaged!" then a few second later, "Flak gun repaired!" Man, my crew is fast! So I continue firing, then crash dive before we sustain more damage. H.I. down to 92%.
That was too much fun! So a couple hours later I surface again and wait for the inevitable attack - there they come, five more! My fellow gunner and I fill the sky with armor-piercing rounds! "We're taking damage!" the chief engineer shouts. "Crash dive!" H.I. down to 82%, otherwise we're unscathed. I'm gonna stay submerged for a while now and hunt for enemy ships!
What a game!
Of course, there's always the whiner seaman:

they should make 1 SH game the goes from the
1st World war to the 2nd World war and ofcourse you can choose the Allied or Axis side for the campaign

That's why I never fight it out with planes. I just hit the crash dive, wait until I'm starting to get under pretty decent, do a hard turn and level out the dive.
what tc do you use, it seems that i dont get much trouble from planes yet. i just entered 1943 and have seen maybe 8 planes through my whole 41-43 campaign.

Dark days ahead. 1943 - 1945. Dont worry you will get air attacks.:yep:

Anything over 256T\C and you will miss out on the aircraft
I dont usually take them on till have the three flak guns
That M42 twin just rocks - great for small ships too
Pity that I dont keep them long
1943 is nasty

I usually stick to the lower TCs, up to 64, occasionally hitting 128 for short periods or even 256 if I have a large area of ocean to cover. Above that I miss too much or end up getting heavily damaged when my watch crew doesn't give me adequate warning (addressed in another thread). I play in sections because I like to watch the weather changes and get fair warning of warships (especially in a storm when there's little visibility) and that means dropping out of
TC and doing hydrophone sweeps.

What a game indeed! Just came back from a patrol (#14) where I hit a convoy hard - mainly because I got lucky I suppose. Hit the destroyer first, it was coming towards me unsuspecting and then I hit the corvette escort - they were on to me, but not very well... You can imagine what ensued. An unescorted convoy, ripe for the picking. No troop transports unfortunately, but lots of C3. Torps and guns depleted and I only got 60000 tonnes. I still need to learn a lot about targetting torpedoes properly :p
Still, the feeling the game gives you is unique. Perhaps it's time to try some of the mods I see here. Glad to have found a community of u-boat junkies!

Only... 60000!!! I usually get around 10-15000, and even then i think its good, i dont use TDC (takes too long and theres no chance in hell to program all the crap into the TDC, in the binoculars i cant even see the angle of bow :S so whats the point using 5 mins plotting in angles and stuff like that when theyre probably wrong anyways.. lol. I shoot torps straight, aiming in front of them, depending on distance. works alot better for me. But if anyone know how to find out angle on bow plus speed and heading please tell me and il get better tonnage.

I've seen more girls interestingly enough on this forum that play SH3 than any other game I've played! I know two girls that play Day of Defeat but thats about it.
Its like every man's dream! A woman that gets a rush out of firing flak guns!
SO tell me shegeek, is there a Mr. shegeek?

Exactly! At least we hump the leg instead of ones hand. :hmm:
I tried out a patrol in 1943 and reminded myself why I don't get far. On my first patrol I used all my renown to get upgrades for my Type XIC and then headed out to my assigned grid in the BE area. On my way there I manage to catch a couple of merchants but on the fourth day it must have been a gale of a wind of the seas because the waves were almost always going over my entire boat. Somehow a couple of bombers found with my radar (amazing enough) and decided to make my day. I crashed dive, not being able to man the flak guns. As I'm hit 10m and think I am safe in my uboat my boat is thrown out of the water by twin 500 pound bombs (the first one lifted titled my uboat to almost 60 degrees and the second one killed 10 men in my aft quarters. I thought I was okay because I had not recieved the instant then "bang" there it is. I wish you could decide when your dead and not some silly formula for death. Anyway to change/disable this ?

I usually get around 10-15000
You need to use the dead stick approach, and fire with both your rear and fore tubes. One at tankers, two at troop transports. Wait until the stragglers have fallen back and the escorts resumed with the convoy before dropping them with torps/deck guns.
If you're not in a type 2, there's no reason to ever come back with less than 30k tons. There are entirely too many convoys.

I dont mind the game "calculating" my demise. I dont care for the "bang your dead" screen. There should at least be some cut scene with dramatic music.
No less than 30 tons..... sigh... and I thought I was pretty good LOL
Yea I usually take what I get... plus I suck at convoy attacks... every time I do get a good position for the attack (90% AOB viewing all ships) I get detected so Its to the point I just go in through the front, do a single attack dive to 125 and hide:-?

Just this minute attacked a convoy
11th Feb 1940 in the Wolfpack campaign in a IXB
Been shadowing for a while before being spotted by a corvette
Took him out then attacked by Frigate
Took him out with a bow on shot and that left me with a convoy to myself and no escorts
Managed 10 ships for over 60k tons before breaking off to bring in torps from the outside
Been ordered to join hunt for another convoy now tho to form up a wolfpack:x
Could have finished off the last 5 mercs :yep: but orders are orders
