Ripper wants £55-a-week handout

28/07/06

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe has launched an appeal to increase his £12-a-week state handout.
The mass murderer, who butchered 13 women during
a five-year reign of terror, is demanding a pay rise
so he can buy more stamps to reply to the sackful of
sick love-letters he gets every week.
He wants his income support increased to £55 a week so
he can spend it on items deemed “luxuries” including
books and magazines.
But the revelation that the killer, who is in Broadmoor Hospital, receives any payment at all prompted fury among relatives of his victims last night.
Beryl Leach, whose 20-yearold university student daughter Barbara was murdered by Sutcliffe in 1979, said: “This makes me sick. Not only are my taxes paying for his board and lodgings but now more of my money is going towards giving him cash for treats.
“I can understand him having a small allowance for
stamps to stay in contact with his family but this is just obscene. I am 75 and my pension doesn’t allow me to have £12 a week spare for luxury items, let alone £55.
“I feel so resentful of the hurt he has caused and this is just something else that beggars belief. We are so soft on offenders in this country and across the board our society is now suffering because of it.”
Frank Smelt, whose wife Olive survived a brutal assault by Sutcliffe in 1975, said: “This is totally outrageous but nothing at all surprises me any more over the treatment they give this man.
“Instead of giving him any cash at all they should have sent the money to the poor orphans he created when he killed their mothers. There is an old saying that the lunatics have taken over the asylum and nothing could be truer in this case.”
Sutcliffe’s younger brother Mick, who lives in Cottingley, Bradford, said: “Just about everybody else receives £55-a-week income support but Peter is getting £12. There is an appeal about it going on which will be heard some time next year.
“If he wins the appeal he will get the same amount of money as everybody else. He uses the money he gets for phone calls, papers, books and stamps for his letter writing.
“If he gets it he will be able to buy more of what he needs, rather than scrimping and saving.”
Sutcliffe, who was jailed for life at the Old Bailey in 1981 with an order to serve a minimum of 30 years, was recently rumoured to have been planning an appeal against his conviction and sentence.
But his brother revealed that such a move would not be
possible until 2011 and in his opinion would never happen.
“He cannot even try to appeal until he has served the
minimum 30 years the judge gave him and he has now been inside for 25 years. But he knows he is never coming out.
“Public opinion would never allow it. He would be a hunted man.”
He said his brother, who suffers from diabetes, had
recently spent nearly three weeks in Broadmoor’s hospital wing when his condition worsened and his weight ballooned.
Mick said: “He used to be 12 and a half stone but his weight had gone up to 16 or 17 stone. He has been in the hospital wing but he is now back on his ward. His diabetes has stabilised and he has lost some weight.”
Sutcliffe is still visited by his former wife Sonia and he also keeps in touch with other members of his family.
A spokesman for Broadmoor refused to comment.

Oh dear tabloid hysteria at work again. So he gets £55 a week while in prison for the rest of his life big deal. The main thing is he's behind bars.

Sorry guys but some of the comments I'm seeing here of late in this and various other topics suggest to me that humanity is going out of the window.

What happened to rising above the filth.

Fact is people like the ripper this gives them publicity they shouldn't have. They should be forgotten. It isn't like Sutcliffe is the only murderer in prison, probably not the worst. Just that he got the publicity.

XabbaRus, The Ripper may be behind bars but he is having a great time at are expense, is he suffering or rotting for his crimes? No he is not, he is having the time of his life and laughing at us all. Justice is a word the legal system has almost forgotten.

I think you are exageratting, there are many more people having a good time at the tax payers expense and they aren't behind bars....and I'm not just talking about your council estate benefit junkie.

While you are worrying about the likes of Peter Sutcliffe I'm worrying about this

This to me is lot more concerning than whether a murder who is going to spend the rest of his life in jail gets £55 a week.

I wonder how much tax money is paid to keep him there? coff excuse me how much of OUR MONEY is spent on him alone in one day to feed him to make him comfy and warm blankets the works.

Id say about £40 a day maybe more of my money !
