Battlefield 2?

Nah. After playing Op Flashpoint, Battlefield 2 is not all that enticing.

OFP 2 however - now that is a game I want to play!

That too. There will be two true sequals thig year, and I'll get both of them. I'll buy armed assault as well as operation flashpoint 2. We already know that Armed Assault will be good because it uses the same engine. OFP 2 however has the better graphics. Matter of fact it has some of the best graphics I have seen on a PC!

OFP2:

Armed Assualt:

Here are some pics that impressed me about OFP2. It just screams atmosphere! Now I remember why I built this computer - it wasn't for Oblivion!:

Umm thats Armed Assault. Same game, new name. Notice the developer is the same for both?

Reason for the name change is Bohemia Interactive had a falling out with Codemasters, and Codemasters owns the rights to the name Operation Flashpoint. So to get it released they changed the name to Armed Assault and are trying to find a new north american publisher last i heard.

Read Operation Flashpoint 2 E3 2005 Hands-On Impressions (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/operationflashpoint2/news.html?sid=6126353)

(btw split this off to its own topic as it has nothing to do with Prey)

From what I understand, they are two different games? I knew both where in development at one time, have they merged?

Thought so - they are not the same game:

Operation Flashpoint 2, under development by Codemasters Studios (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Codemasters_Studios&action=edit), is expected to be released, when ready. Originally, Bohemia Interactive Studio was assigned to develop Operation Flashpoint 2, but with a break in relations between Codemasters and Bohemia Interactive Studio, Codemasters will find another developer to develop an entirely game and engine from ground up. Very little is known about the progress of Operation Flashpoint 2.
Armed Assault (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Assault), under development by Bohemia Interactive Studio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohemia_Interactive_Studio), is expected to be released in Q3 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006).The graphics are even very much different between the two releases.

Some more info on the two games:

Due to legal issues between BIS and Codemasters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codemasters), the original publishers of Operation Flashpoint, Codemasters owns the intellectual property (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property) to the game. Since BIS has severed its connection with Codemasters and no longer own the Operation Flashpoint name, Armed Assault is considered to be the direct descendent of Operation Flashpoint but not a full sequel (hence references to Armed Assault as Operation Flashpoint 1.5) while a total sequel to Operation Flashpoint is currently referred to as "Game 2". Codemasters plans to release a rival title to BIS using the name Operation Flashpoint 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Flashpoint_2) with which BIS has no participation. The current estimated release date is July / September2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_in_video_gaming) based on an official declaration of an Q3 2006 release.

Those screenshots are still not from Operation flashpoint 2, as since the split codemasters is last i heard still looking for a new developer to start work on it. All those screenshots are from what was going to be OFP2 from BIS, and is now Armed Assault. Just go to the main site if you want to see the exact same style of graphics. http://www.armedassault.com/

As proof just look at Codemaster's site for OFP2, there are no screen shots, no nothing, just a hardly used forum.

THe screenshots I provided are full of HDR. If you go look at the screenshots of Armed Assault, they lack HDR at all, even the ones posted a couple days ago by BIS themselves. ALso read that mag article - the engine I post above has 'nothing' to do with BIS's AA. The engine that made the above screenshots is still in Codemasters hands and apparently is pretty far along. Also, they never have updated the OFP 2 site, and probably never will - its looked like that since it was annouced.

This is from the ArmA forums FAQ

-Is ArmA the sequel to OFP? What's Game 2?

No, it is a different game, the name Operation Flashpoint belongs to Codemasters. OFP 2 (presumably made by Codemasters) will be the sequel to OFP. ArmA is an engine update based on improvements from OFP:Elite for the Xbox (it is further improved though).

Game 2 (http://www.bistudio.com/games/of2.html) was the orignally planned sequel to OFP, now it's a working title

So it seems those screenshots may be from "Game 2" from BIS which is under development.

Btw i cant find anything post the split with Codemasters and BIS of any sort of updates what so ever on OFP2. There is also no way they are gona develope a brand new game from scratch in less then a year. Plus Codemasters doesnt own the engine BIS developed which those screenshots were generated, BIS does.

VBS1 and VBS2 should be added to this post...since OFP and Arma are bi-products of the two....

Those arnt actual civilian retail games but military sims designed for the military which is why the price tag is so high. Also since they are only available to be purchased by government institutions (military, law enforcement, etc) there is no point in listing either of them here.

Civilians cant get their hands on it at least legaly.

What are you talking about? you can purchase vbs1....yes it has a high price...that's about it....the difference is its made for setting up scenerios with instructors in real time and does not include a campaign like the entertainment version. But, there are no restrictions on its purchase (other than you have to buy it through Bohemia instead of an outside retailer) You can also purchase it from people that are selling their copies on the net (if you want to buy them used). But, as far as the product itself...the public is not restricted from purchasing.

Outside North America it was possible for civilians to buy VBS1 since 2003.
Here in Germany we have since 2004 a small VBS1 gamer community due to the high price of this product. But there are gaming clans since 2004 and it is being played on big public LAN parties.

Just a question regarding OFP2...is it going to be a real system hog like FSX???

Also, at wat settings do u think i can play with my Geforce 6600?

I almost forgot , which OFP (OFP 1) expansion pack do you think is better ? Red Hammer or Resistance??

Red hammer adds only a russian campaign and few new vehicles, Resistance adds much more than that, so I say RESISTANCE! ;)
