Which is the better game, i know might be a silly question but i just finished reading a review of X3 and they state that X2 is a better game until X3 bugs are fixed.
I just rebrought X2 - yeah rebrought meaning when this game first came out i brought it and it ran like a dog with three legs on my last PC so i resold it. now 2 yrs later and with better PC I spotted X2 online going for $20 so scored it.

Problem is no manual came with this other than a PDF one, game is updated to version 1.4 latest i think, and i see theres some Plugins for download on there website which i might try. Also Egosoft have put out a "No copy protection" .exe fix on there site! lol. They must of had alot of gamers complaining about Starforce.

Anyone else a fan of X2 and still playing it or have ya all moved on to X3
Any Tips as this game looks mind boggling :o :D

X3 is better. Both have starforce though. :(

No newtonian physics either as would be found in real space.

They both do not operate off any real theoretical physics and technology.

As for a complex trading game with massive possible networks of factories you can string together - they are well done. Only problem is, all the factories you purchase will end in purely making components for energy units which is the best and only way to make any real cash.

One more thought - I have not tried this yet but Independance War 2 has been modded to make it like the original Elite. Independance war two has everything that X2 and X3 lacks too - theoretical physics and technology, including partical accelerators as a source of energy, with plasma siphoned off to feed the plasma cannons, etc. Shields based on warped space instead of magic energy barriers. Newtonian physics. Also - it is free form.

The Elite mod brings it up to X2 / X3 trading too. I must try it at some point, but worried that I will get hooked since the original game was major addicting, and I don't have much time for it right now. Independence war I and II (II was named edge of chaos - starts you out as a kid to get you familiar with the controls, and then you go to jail for 17 years and emrge a little ticked off, but I won't ruin the story!) didn't do so hot though because the average joe gamer is not intelligent enough to understand how to work the physics of real space flight.

Torn-Stars is the trading mod. From the looks of it, there are even additions to this mod coming out now called unstable space! Cool!

Info on the original game and other mods can be found here:

-S PS. I should mention a 'hugh' universe. http://www.i-war2.com/eoc_starmap_reference/index.htm

PPS. You can fly manually to any location too - matter of fact, if you want to spend years travelling between one point, you can. I wonder if you could manually time a thrust sequence and then turn in for a deaccel burn over the period of a month or two? I am not sure I could even do it perfectly. I'd have to make course corrections after I slowed down.

That Independence war 2 you mentioned sounds like me! Ive played the first I war that came out but never bothered to carry on with the sequels. I liked the realistic flying in that game, the first time i went to turn my craft at high speed i wondered what the hell was going on :) yeah but i might try that I war 2.

So far im enjoying X2 the threat, yet you really need a good manual or tutorial for this. Am just getting use to the ingame menu and there 100 or so commands - hell they could of done this a easier way surely - like slide down menus on the main screen or something.

Thanks for the info.

The original I-War was scripted. I-War 2 is not - it is dynamic. Cargos going to stations or where it is needed - just like X2, and you are of course a pirate! What the elite mod does is add the ability to become a trader/merchant instead of having to steal everything + give a whole brand new campaign.

X3 is pretty much the same as X2 but prettier. A few new options like making complexes but i'd certainly go the new one as the old is well, old.

I played X2 for like 3 months, then the excitment died. Haven't tried X3. Think the next spacesim i would like to try out is Eve.

I play X3, since it is StarForce_free through patch 2.x and have now upgraded to the XTended Mod

I'll buy it, but I have one question - is it possible to install it without installing StarForce - kind of like you can with SH3?

While Eve is a popular game and imo pretty good. It's too much of a point and click fest for me. You don't actually fly the ship you just tell it what to do which tends to get a bit boring.

yea theres a bit of clicking in EvE but you get used to it, besides the only ships that really require manuvering are nanoships and frigates/t2 varients/minmatar. its not a game were you can hit the stick left and pull up to evade thata salvo from the battleship 100 klicks out.

Also, for X-series fans I strongly recomend reading the Rogues series of fan-fiction, so far part one is a book in length but its a great read.

Xtended is a must, one of the best mod packs i've seen on any game.

Good thread!

You have probably convinced me to get both X2 & X3 seeing as I can pick them up in the UK for about £8 each. Not really loosing much if I don't get on with them.

Depends on the version you will buy!

Original Version 1.x:
StarForce is only installed if you start it the first time unpatched!
1. Install X3 out of the box
(do not start it afterwards)
2. patch it with last patch
(patch removes the SF install routines)

Budget Version 2.0 (allready patched)
1. just Install it

Like it will save you from carpel tunnel.

Yea eve is a "point & click" interface but you really get used to it, it doesn't require you to spam clicks really unless you are trying to maneuver something with precision.

Then again my mouse hand could just be "adjusted" *looks at browser history*

I can also definately recommend X3, replaying it now after the release of the Xtended 0.72 Mod and loving it.

You also don't have to only make money from factory/UT trading, you can make heaps capping and once you get larger ships: Xenon clearing for guns that sell for 0.9 million each  .

and the mod bring such lovely ships, I personally think some of them are better that the original games ones.
