If people started carrying 2 iPods, the real one, and a fake remote bomb one, then in less than a month Mugging would be reduced to insignificance, because all Muggers would be severely injuried, dead, or lost their hands/fingers.

Yes, there could be some collateral damage depending on how strong and how much explosives you can fit on a fake iPod, but Muggers won't rob electronic junk anymore.

Sounds about right from what I've been hearing about British justice lately. You also forgot to mention that due to pain and suffereing, his sentence would be commutted and all charges dropped.
