I really would like to know what Americans think about this Israeli assessement of their relation to America.

Sounds about right.

I don't see it quite like the way they describe, but there is probably some truth to that. The US wants Hezbollah weakend, sure, but if Isreal does something other than accomplish that, I don't think much will change in the eyes of the US.
The way I see it, Isreal is a sovereign nation and Hezbollah launching rockets into Isreal violates that sovereignity. THey must do what they must do to stop it, since its obvious Lebonon has little interest in doing anything about it, and so this is how the cards lay. They must insure their security at all costs because any other country would do the same.
If you question what Isreal is doing right now, then the US and other foreign nations have no right to be in Afganistan either, since they are there on the exact same grounds. Just a thought. Running out of time though, otherwise I'd go into more depth - got to get out of here in about 20 min -need to pick up something.

From an analysts point of view, yeah this is the short/long version of the story.
I've always found it hard to quantify the relationship between Israeli and the US. Its a strange relationship indeed. But the author has strong points. An only ally in a region of US hate is an important ally indeed.
But the authors view that the US is waiting for a knock-out punch or a weakening of a Iranian proxy is a little romantic.

Concidering how many people hate them too means they will be a long time ally, not a nice decade long one like Sadam was when he was useful for anti Iranian missions.

*shrug* Appropriate depiction?
edit: In my opinion, it's pretty darn close.

Not quite - Hezbollah should be bending over.

And olmert should have the label "Village Idiot" on his forehead.
And I agree that a total knockout of Hizbullah is probably not within Israels' means at this point and time, but they can severely set-back their plans and buy a little more time. Time for what? I have no idea.

Time to survive a little longer of course. Is there any doubt thats what really drives Israels actions?

When it's Olmert in the pilots' seat I have no idea what is going to happen next. Sharon was predictable, but I'm not familiar with this guy.
What me and the wife were wondering was what the heck are our.."Americas"...politicians thinking when then pledged like 35 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon when it is our ally doing the attacking, and not pledge that kinda aid the the 2800 familes of Iraq/Afgan soldiers who lost there lives and the 8000 who are serverely wounded and 18000 overall?WTF are they thinking....isn't it the Arab countries themselves who are swimming in american money from oil...I'm soory but let them send aid to Lebanon if anything send the 35 million to Isreal....
I know it is to try to show "Face" in that America really does care about the little guy but at this point in time I think this is really folly on the part of American politicians...do we even care what anyone thinks after we took our stand in Afghan and Iraq?
I did not even read the article Skybird but I think you know how a majority of American Christians think....they will side with Israel without question. As do I for years I have seen the actions of them and they're neighbors and it is the actions what matter....
Israel did'nt go into Leb and snatch anyone and if that deed is what broke the camels back to them then so be it...they took a stand and I respect it...and I know LOTS of people here do to.

So all you guys seem to disagree that a failure of the Israeli operation would result in a lowering of American faith in it's stationary aircraftcarrier, as it is sometimes called? That is the question the article is about: in how far would American ME policy change, if Israel cannot realize it's military targets in this operation.

Who calls Israel a "stationary aircraft carrier"? I've never ever heard it termed that, as a matter of fact I believe the last time there were US troops stationed in that nation was the Patriot batteries during Desert Storm.
Perhaps you're confusing it with WW2 England? AFAIK that's the only place the term was used...

Ah, don'T take it word by word, it is a metaphor only! but it is not rarely used over here. Must have red it repeatedly in newspapers, books, and heared it on TV as well over the years.

The 35 mil is shut up money so that Isreal can keep doing what it needs to do.
Doh! Subman lol...
...To the aircraft carrier comment Skybird I can see where that comes from, but again America as I see it ...from the perspective of an American living here... is as always...50/50...50 percent are faithful and don't sweat the small stuff and realize things take time and sacrifice and faith ,hope and prayer....50 percent are like weeds blowing in the wind....they are all for the wars and fights when the wind is blowing just right...
Israel will always be under the wing of America probably for 2 main reasons....one from the Biblical standpoint and the other from the stationary aircraft carrier standpoint.
Dats 2 very very strong reasons. :)

That's too bad because the term implies an operational use of Israeli military facilities that we don't have.

The IDF is an ally and a strategical asset for global, geostrategical policy making in the region. Intel cooperation is high. American political influence on military operations of the Israelis is significant. Don't split hairs here, it really is not needed - nothing bad happened, no flaming took place, everything is calm and the ocean is as smooth as a mirror! ;)
