90-degree AOB vs. success rate

I find that since I learned about firing from this AOB or close to it, I have gotten MUCH more success. 9/10 ships I hit explode now, rather than list and/or sink. I switched from firing all magnetic detonator torpedoes 1m beneath the hull to firing all impact detonator torpedoes at 3m, and I am seeing much more success. Maybe it's because I haven't seen a single dud torpedo since using impact detonators at 3m. Maybe it's because I get very close to enemy ships now, or maybe it's because I attack at night, early morning, or evening when T1 torpedo wakes are harder to spot. In one of my newest boats, U-504, I sank 62332 tons in the first patrol, which is very unusual for me. Yes, I use auto targeting. I don't feel ready for manual yet, it seems too complicated to me. How soon do you think I should switch to manual targeting? I'm not sure if I'm ready for it.

Do the switch when you think yourself you are ready. I started with original SH few yars ago and I have never used auto targeting. I think with manual targeting you get soooo much more out from the game. BTW, why don't you give a try for the manual targeting with a single mission for example? It's not that hard. Estimating the Ab needs to be practiced but you'll learn how to do it. :up: And if you use to shoot usually in 90 deg. angle, then the estimation is not a problem at all.

Well, well, well. I hadn't thought of trying out manual targeting in a single mission. I didn't want to risk killing one of my commanders by attempting manual targeting in a career. It seems like a good idea to try in a single mission, thank you Rosencrantz, I will try that.

I am a 90 degree`er myself. If I fire at a (very) different angle, something has gone wrong. I also use impact.

I was using magnetic for any shots where i couldn't get to a good AOB. Especially shots from behind. I had to give it up when i installed NYGM2.0. I had 4 torpedos explode .5M under a large cargo ships with magnetic. It damage it in any noticeable way.

I think NYGM adjustments make magnetic detonations pretty useless.

But I work hard to get +/-5 of 90* AOB for most of my shots. Lots less torps bouncing off hulls than otherwise.

The secret to manual is practice and confidence. Knowing how to get it all right quickly. If you are stumbling around the concepts and haven't got it totally down by heart you'll not get it right except for under ideal circumstances. Its almost like manual targeting requires as much practice and confidence as any real skill.:hmm: Im sure if you practice you'll get it down to a science.

You can also use the torpedo training session to practice, just switch your realism settings before going into training (either go into single missions and change the settings there, or do it in a carear while at base).
