Valerie's cute:oops:. And I liked seeing that homemade board game, too, as I've made a couple of board games myself througout the years.

As for the Silent War game itself, though, it's looking pretty good. Nice sense of humour in there, too (yes, cats can indeed be very annoying. Not to mention dogs, if you're playing on the floor:o).

2. One thing a board game teaches you is...
b. The US had too many subs.

Nice review. I've played SW quite a bit and like it a lot. You gave the overall impression that the game is difficult to play. I agree that the full campaign can be daunting, but, once you get the rules down, gameplay is pretty fast. I am anxiously awaiting a Cyberboard version so I can play the full campaign at my leisure. Cats and kids "sink" me every time. thanks,
Chris

I couldn't help but notice Valerie's "Hard Days Night" T-shirt. Is she interested in your music too? My own teenage daughter likes John Hughs movies from the eighties.

I would have gone nuts for a game like this years ago. In fact I read about your own game from childhood when you posted it way back when. As soon as I started reading this review I thought of it. I'm glad you included the link.

I'll never forget when I was a kid my brother made a War game with dozens of tiles like this one. I loved it. Anyway I find it difficult to play long games anymore. My son wanted to play monopoly the other night and I about died inside.

It's nice to read the response from AirbourneTD who plays SW. Now we know the game plays quicker once learned.

Or, of course, Neal wants to make a good impression and dressed them up that way just for the game session:lol:.

The game looks really good, and I recommend this (http://p105.ezboard.com/fcompassgamesfrm9.showMessage?topicID=1.topic) after-action report for some further information.

I agree, once you get a good grasp on the rules after a handful of single patrols or one of the short campaigns, the game itself is not difficult. You'll quickly go from looking up the rules at every situation, to relying only on a rules cheat sheet, to having things memorized in no time.

What is difficult is tackling the full campaign in terms of time and dedication. One never has to play the full campaign to get full enjoyment though as the short campaigns and single patrols are pretty fun. You can do a single patrol in an evening or conduct a short campaign over about a week or 2.

The difficulty of this game shouldn't scare anyone away, the frustration of early war torpedoes on the other hand :damn:

You know, Harmsway, we're really lucky in that regard. Yes, my kids like a lot of my music: Billy Idol, Rainmakers, Blondie, Bob Jovi, etc. and I like theirs: Nickleback, All American Rejects, Good Charlotte, Jimmy Eat World, Coldplay. We have no problems jamming in the car, this Dad still likes loud music.

Valerie has similar interests in old classic movies, as I do, and both the twins read much of the same literature I've read.

Safe-Keeper, you're right, I set that pic up :) But funny story: a couple months back my 11-year old Natasha was spending the night in Galveston aboard the sailing ship Elyssa with a Girl Scouts troup. Her mother called me and said they were coming by my house, she said Natasha wanted to get her hat. I thought, ok, she wants one of the caps in her room. Minutes later a knock at the door, I answered, and Natasha runs in, all excited, saying she wants one of my USS CAVALLA SS-244 caps! She wanted to make sure the sailing ship people knew her dad helped work on the submarine in Galveston. :)

Yes, but dogs are merely clumsy, while cats are...perverse.:stare:

Several comments and couple questions

Comment#2: Even though I loved them, it's been ages since I played my last board-game (AH's Third Reich). It was VERY difficult to find someone to play with this kind of games . Being a Spaniard was a problem (game was 100% in english), and I may be quite young to like those games...I'm 28, when I bought those kind of games I was 12 more or less...and 12 year old kids usually play "other kind of games" :D.

It is still very hard to find an opponent. People my age simply won't take a board game over a computer one, ever; at least the ones I know...and english is still a barrier because not everyone understands it around here. Those games are for fanatics, and right now I know none...

In short...for me, Silent War being a single-player game is definitely a plus. I still have Third Reich and Panzerblitz, but I can't play them...

Comment#3: I love the games as realistic as possible. In most board wargames realism=complexity. So I love complex games. The review has really sparked my interest on the game instead of taking me away from it.

Comment#4: If I'm allowed to say it, Valery is really cute. Great music tastes, too. And she even likes wargames!!!!!!!!

now the questions:

Question#1: I guess this is probably an unnecessary one...is this game sold out of the United States?. I mean, can you buy it from the other side of the atlantic?.
Sometimes sucks to live here...

Question#2: She's got the looks, she's got the brains (to understand a game of this complexity, she must!), she's got the music tastes, she's into naval wargamming...She's pretty far away but I can always move to the United States (that would solve the problem on how to buy the game, too ;))...so...Neal ,can I marry your daughter? (I guess this is probably an unnecessary question, too!!! )

Yes nice review. looks like a complicated game. Board games never really gotten into them yet i should, as they will keep me away from the PC for the day. Last and only board game i played was against my son called "Starwars Risk", and i got an earful for trying to cheat. Well come on he was beating me 5 to 1 it was desperate moments - the loser had to do the dishes for a week - guess who lost

Speaking of music your daughter gets into the sound you do, same here my sons like the music i like and i like most of their sounds - System of the Down, Staind, Korn. Me - Jimmy Hendrikes, Cat Stevens, The Doors, David Grey.

Were cool dads.
