That is great, the more the better and especially so in the interests of future subsims, but I'm curious as to why so long after the initial release.

Could be the mega mods breathed new life into SH3 and word is spreading but I think there must be something else at work here.

Maybe the newcomers to the community would tell us themselves what sparked their interest in SH3.

Well, my return to SH3 is because of Grey Wolves. I also think the game is very cheap at for instance play.com.

Nothing thrilling here but I simply needed an (other) excuse before I upgraded my computer to be able to handle the game. I have owned SHIII since last year.

I think one of the reasons the sight is seeing more newbies is because they read the posts and discover that most everyone here is very helpful. This might put them a bit more at ease to ask questions as opposed to just lurking.

So. GOOD JOB members and moderators!

I am completely new to this game and sub sims in general. I only got this game because I was searching for a new game and it had good reviews on a few different websites so I thought I would give it a try.

Well now I am completely addicted! I played through the tutorials alone for like 8 hours straight lol.

I guess my joining with all the other newcomers is just a coincidence.

It might be because of Silent Hunter IV.

Silent Hunter III is my first real sub game (the only other thing I've ever played is the 688 demo).

I grew tired of playing RTS and FPS games and wanted some variation. So I thought, "hey, why not a submarine game"? I started a thread asking for recommendations and got Silent Hunter III. I read some reviews and watched some movies, and here I am.

well guys what can i say...when i was young, when i was 6-7 years old, my daddy bought an AMIGA 500+...and started to play war games...so i was caught in the net of the floppy world..searchin everywhere with my daddy games to play...i had a subsim game that was made for AMIGA 500+..but i can't remind the name..maybe it was really named Das-Boot, if i ain't wrong...so our passion grew high, and when 486 was out..we bought it..then it was the time for Aces of the Deep, but this game had a terrible bug....corvettes and freighters running at 60 or 80 knots aren't that kind of hard thing, are impossible!....and we sticked to 486 for a looooooooong time, we changed it to the First Athlon 1 Ghz, and my dad still use it, while i went to a 3,4 Pentium...and one day..........searching around......feeling that there was no such possibility to find a game like the OLD ones i loved to play, the ones who sticked my attention only to find how to properly land my B-17 without loosing my ball turret....the ones who plugged me to the seat for days and months like that ****in Death Star, and me shoutin "U'LL DIE EMPEROR U'LL DIE MY SON OF A BITCH!!!!!!" (or when it came out TIE FIGHTER "U'LL DIE REBELS, EAT THIS REBELS, LUKE UR A DUMBASS!!!!!).....well i was there looking at games like COD 2, NFS, all the new-without-hope-only-graph-filled-games...and there......i found....S.......H........3........

so i thought........really i thought......LET'S SHOUT ALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRMMMM and buy this game!

so i did, and the rest is history....

you seem to have some poor up bringing to use the lanugauge you did at 6 and 7 years old but every Father can teach their children what they desire :hmm:

As far as the mass new game players I think it might be the game has gotten to be afordable to alot of folks.. I saw SH3 some place on line for only 14.00 usd ... I forgot where however ................

Well I saw a thread about subsim.com while back at Ubisoft SH3 forums.

If I remember correctly the discussion was about looking for another source for the mods, tech support and stuff.. Since Ubisoft aint providing any support these days.
People were very impressed after they paid a visit here.

hmmm wait a minute! By newcomers you mean new players or new members to subsim forums? Kinda got confused here..

Anyway that's great either way.

One of the reasons I keep coming here is that everyone's very friendly to fellow captains. Anyone's questions, requests and opinions are respected, whether your a newcomer or veteran.

This is the best game community out there.

THank you, fellow captains

I played SH2 a lot, but didn't get around to SH3 until Feb or so this year. Only have time for a game or two at a time, and I was into Rome: Total War. Put that aside at least for a while in favour of SH3. Can't get over how good it is, not to mention all the mods. I don't get tired of it a bit.

I bought this game last christmas, but I have been too busy to play it until now.

Don't know why now of all the times this summer, maybe just getting bored with everything I already have around here...

Some of my friends who normally have no interest in simulation games play Silent Hunter 3. I think there are several reasons why this game has such a wide appeal:

1. Stunning graphics which runs well on modest systems

2. Crew animations, you have a crew with names and faces which adds to the immersion, the different stations in 3D make you feel you actually are aboard a WW2 U-boat.

3. Unlike flightsims a subsim is less built on reflexes and assigning a gazillion buttons on your keyboard. To attack a convoy and survive you have to plan one step ahead.

4. Excellent mods

I noticed in my local future shop that SH3 is now $20 (unlike the deplorable $70 I paid at release:damn:) so maybe the low price and wicked cool looking concept has created a second wind for the game?

TIE Fighter... Best Star Wars game ever. From way back when the Star Wars games were good. Buy X-Wing Alliance and download the TIE Fighter mission pack for it (search the forums of www.xwaupgrade.com). All the missions of TF with XWA UP's graphics=Joy.

Yes, the friendiness here is pretty unique.

Well even though i already had SH2 i was and still am a die hard flight simmer, but when SH3 hit the shops i was dying to get it only to find i had to get some pretty radical upgrades done to my computer( windows xp, DVD player, and a much better graphics card) now this isn't a sob story but on a civil servants wage it took alot of begging the little woman to let me upgrade to the best performance required. As for subsim i did a search and found some wonderful people to help me in times of trouble, and as for MODS i never heard of any of them untill i came here. Hats off and many thanks SUBSIM.

I think all newcomers are impressed by this - I know I have commented on it several times. You just get used to the idea that the internet is a cesspool of idiots.

It still is, of course, they just dont know this adress yet. :D

:hmm: I had totally forgotten that UbiSoft even ran a SH3 forum. I was always so flabbergasted by the fanatically lunatic mindset of the IL2 crowd over there that I have never bothered to check out their SH3 forum.

Anyway, i remember my first days with the old Amiga 500+. Gee i feel old now!
Compared to the Workstation I own now, my old Amiga gets his modest ass kicked!
But thats how i started with subsims!

But at the very beginning there was "Das Boot":ping:

And Subsim was the first forum i joined! Didn't even bother with UBI!:shifty:
Everything was cool here! The fellow Kaleuns and the mods!

well I'm in gaming community and we play COD ,BF2 the reason why I got into SH3 is strange one .I knew about this game for long time but I was thinking no online play(only 8 ppl or so) and it's too hard to play not like running and spamming in COD.Then I saw this game on one of the torrents site and downloaded it.Played for one day and thought THIS GAME IS GREAT.Went to the shop $14 AUD latter I was playing for hours and I'm really enjoying it.Not like my wife she HATE'S it:lol: and ppl on this forums are very helpfull

Well here I am. A noob to Sh3 with my first post. Hello to all.

The reason I got the game was I saw it the budget review section in PCGamer last month. Liked what I saw and after a bit of research on the tinternet decide to fork out my £10. Not a genre I've really tried before but a tenner's not really that much to gamble.

Now I am addicted! I live in Hull, a port in the north of England. Every time I see a ship on the river I start estimating its speed and AOB.

So after reading the pitiful manual and still being more or less clueless as to how to play a quick google search lead me here. I've been spending dinner hours for the last week scanning through the forums and have now been able to up the realism to a massive 29% .

Most gaming forums have helpful people on them but this forum is one of the most mature I have used. The EVE online community is quite like this one whereas Oblivion forum is probably the most hostile place on the net.

There is nothing worse than been stuck with something and only to be shot down in flames for asking a simple question in a forum by some 15 year old windbag who probably was stuck the same as you were six months ago. Not seen any evidence of that here.

Looking at all I still have left to learn with this game I can forsee me asking some pretty stupid questions in the near future.

I'm new -- but I havent "come" yet :smug:

Well actually when I first got the game and saw the graphics It was a big "WOW" for me.

I just saw the game in teh shop and thort wot the hell .... it looks better than Super Mario 3 - and I cant get into those poncey strategy games -- I like First Person Shooters like RTCW and Enemy territory.

So I spent me munneh on it

when i needed teh patchy I found this site and forumz - and I said "OMG look at all teh people and OMG LOOK AT ALL THE DAZZLING DOWNLOADZ:sunny: ". I downloaded until my wiring burnt out ;)

Then I needed some help0rs and everyone here is so knowledgable, helpful and dont treat n00bz like some alien lifeform scum.

thx all :yep:

I'm new to the forum, but have been playing SHIII since about a month after it came out here in Oz. I visited here a few times after finding out about the forum and finally thought WTH, they seem pretty well behaved compared to other forums I've been on and i thought I might be able to help someone who was just starting out in the gam, not to mention getting access to some tips and pointers myself.

I bought the game not long after release, brought her home and my old computer wouldn't play it. Problem with my Nvidia card not supporting SH3. I had joined subsim at the time and would come on every so often to look at the pictures, read some stories and just wish I could take my boat out on her maiden voyage. Well, my computer blew the PSU and decided it was now or never, so I ordered a Dimension 9150 and she plays beautifully. Since I just finished college, I have some time on my hands and I'm making the most of it out on the NordSee right now. I've barely ever played SH3 stock, got GW right off the bat and loving it. These forums and the great modders make a great game the closest thing anyone can get to fighting the U-Boat war. Hats off to all of you! :arrgh!:

I am new to this forum , but i am playing sh3 for almost a year now.I must say that new games have "stolen" my heart from the game, but when i installed grey wolves , i can't take my eyes from it!! It has transformed the game completely.I am reading the threads in this forum for over 4 months , but haven't posted any replys. That's because all the people in here are very very polite and understanding and i have solved all issues i had with the game..i believe that mods are a big boost for the game itself -and every game- but the thing is that ubi should had those "extras" integraded in the vanilla game.

My interest in this game sparked from hearing about it, since I absolutely loved SH2. I was amazed at the graphics and almost drooled just from the screenshots. However, I didn't get it for months later on my birthday in January. Quite an awesome game, this is.

The forum here is definately one of the best I have ever been on.

The Ubizoo is an example of one of the worst forums I have ever been on.There are a few decent ones but most have the maturity of a 3 year old.

Here everyone is mature, friendly, helpful and respectful of others opinions. We may get into a few tiffs here and there but after the dust clears its all good again and we get back to what matters..the game and the community.

Its nice to see all the new faces showing up to keep our favorite game alive and kicking.

I got the game when it first came out. Did not like starforce. I think it messed up some of my other programs so left the game alone for a while. I am now back and wish to install the grey wolves mod but the site seems down.
I had to get a new graphics card for the game as well. £30 game and £70 graphics card. Looking foward to number 4.
