nice pumpjet too.
Problem is that with the Russian Navy in the financial bind it is... how long does it take to finish a sub... like 10-15 years of construction? and that's if its not cancelled and scrapped before hand, let alone if their will be any further units of the class.

I hope they never complete it, why do they need one? They have the US as an ally now, not an enemy:ping:

Don't worry, their newest class is almost 15 years behind schedule.......
They should build it and turn it into a hotel, that should pay off the cost of the construction bill.

How about the US dismantles the 60 688i and 20 or so ohio submarines ?
Why would the US need them anymore ?
How about the 10 nuclear aircarft carriers ?
Don't we live in one big happy world ? :rotfl::arrgh!:

sorry... the US aircraft carriers will have to stay... operational necessity...
and i doubt if there are 60 ssns in the inventory, or 20 ssbns prowling around either...
the new Russian sub is probably being built for a lot of the same reasons we're still building subs... besides, if they decide they don't need it anymore, India will always be there to make an offer...

44 SSN's 14 SSBN's 4 SSGN's total american submarine force
26 SSN's 16 SSBN's 14 SSGN's total russian force
(note SSGN is deemed attack submarine also note this is from the last inventory i picked up dated 2005)

so, if there is any validity to Kapitan's numbers (they look accurate as far as i can see), it's obvious that the numbers Goldorak was alluding to were a lil exxagerrated...
plus, you must take into account the fact that at no time are any of the total numbers ever in service together... maintainence, repairs, etc usually means that at least 50% of any of the force is tied up at the pier...
getting back to the new Russian sub... at first glance, it reminds me of the Seawolf class... the last unit especially...
of course there are the usual appearance differences between US and Soviet boats, but overall, it seems to be a Soviet response to the JimmCarter... lengthened hull, pumpjet/propulsor, to me indicate an attempt at a lot of similar mission capabilities...

The only source that will validate my numbers is janes, and thier website hasnt been updated in years.
however i do have a list of each submarine in service, some where.

I took those numbers from the book "cold war submarines", and they were correct up until the end of the cold war.
I had no idea that the us had already decomissioned 20 688i and almost 50% of its ssbn.

Are you going bind? if you come here via the front gate there was daily news about it on the home page :D U.S turned 4 of thier ohios into SSGN so it leaves 14 left.
Russia has 16 SSBN's although 15 are fully active and only about 6 will be on duty some where at some stage of deployment (meaning theres only about 2 or 3 at sea).
If you want real numbers try the soviet navy.
91 SSBN's 422 attack submarines making a force of 513 submarines of which some 250 are nuclear powerd. (note this is at the hieght of the cold war)

Look at the third pic, immediately behind the sail. Do I see missile hatches there or not?

Yes i can four of them or at least four squares, but this looks like a seawolf hull with a kilo sail dont you think?

cruise missile launch tubes abaft of the sail, as opposed to in the bow section... right???
those are cruise missiles tubes??

There have been many designs to house cruise missiles like SSBN's
this looks like a seawolf hull with a kilo sail dont you think?
Not really, only because of the pumpjet. The dorsal surface is more boxy, it appears to have alonger length to diameter ratio, and its TA is housed in its dorsal rudder (as opposed to independent twin ventral housing in the SW).
A source I've read is reporting that there are supposedly going to be around 8+ VLS tubes aft of the sail. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/row/rus/885.htm

so those are in fact cruise missile tubes similar to the ones in the bows of US ssns... right ?
--Mike
As far as I understand yes. Cruise missiles and not SLBM missiles.

To be perfectly honest i bookmarked directly the forum, so i seldom see the homepage. :rotfl::|\\

Something to think about the comparison of SSGN's is that the Ohio conversions are for TLAM's since the TASM is no longer in our inventory. Also, the Russian SSGN's are more ASM orriented.

That is a picture of the Boeri so it is an SSBN. Taht model is direct from Rubin, I have seen other pictures of that particular one from a Weapons Expo in St Petes. I'm not sure if it is single or double hulled but it looks pretty.
Kapitan

It will be double hulled look at everything else.

Nothing to say they haven't decided to go for a change. Pretty sure I read somewhere that the next gen of Russian subs will be smaller single hulled type. Agreed though Borei will be 2 hull.
I stand corrected then. I was under the expression that this was the next SSN, but if it is the next SSBN then those VLS tubes are indeed for SLBM and not cruise missiles.
