View Full Version : Lost flank speed!

My computer recently pooped the bed and I had to reformat and reload everything.

I loaded SH, the latest patch and SH lll Commander r2.6, in that order. I just started a new career and have encountered the following in my Type Vll-B:

I have no flank speed. When I call for flank, the indicator goes to Stop and the engines stop.

When I crash dive, the same thing occurs.

Full speed gets me about 12 Kts.

I think I either have a screwed up file or SH lll Commander r2.6 has a bug. Any constructive comments?

I don't see how SHIII Commander could have anything to do with a glitch like that. Did you change anything else?

Do you have enough people in the engine room? I think if efficiency is too low that might happen.

There is a mod with the latest SH3 Commander that randomizes a possible sabotage or mechanical problems on the Uboats. So you may end up with problems with the boat from the start. You wont know until you actually see the problem. So you may be suffering from engine sabotage or problems due to this mod.

I am not sure if this particular problem is included with that and if not then I am not to sure what would cause it.

In your SH3 Commander setup screen... turn your time compression down from 4096 ( ? ) back down one notch to 2048 and flank will work again.. happened to me too and thats what I did to fix it ....

edit : you can still get flank speed by just using the dial to choose 20 knots also instead of the flank lever.........

This definately sounds like you've run into one of the random files for Sabotage/Malfunctions.
If the date is after June 1 1944(Normandy Invasion month) then you been the victim of sabotage during your recent refit in port. As the captain it's up to you to decide to either deal with it if all else is working properly or return to base. You can always Exit/Save/Relaunch to see if it was able to be repaired at sea.

If you're willing to risk a new malfunction popping up. LOL I like the mod Hemisent, did a crash dive test and got very concerned when we passed 120m. After getting the boat under control and back to periscope depth the observation scope miraculously worked again.

Completely forgot about that. I don't have 2.6 yet, so it didn't occur to me. On the other hand I was under the impression that an engine malfunction would make all speeds slower, not eliminate one setting from the mix.

Same thing happened to me. Haven't read anywhere that this is included in the sabotage mod. ?

From the SH3Cmdr Help README file...

Simulated equipment malfunctions plus (optional) damage caused by sabotage - by Hemisent.
Simulates the effect of equipment malfunctions plus damage caused by sabotage by randomly reducing default equipment specifications. Editable through 'Randomised events.cfg' and the seven 'Randomised events_19**.cfg' files located in your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder. By default, only malfunctions are simulated. However, deleting or renaming the seven 'Randomised events_19**.cfg' files will leave the 'Randomised events.cfg' file active, which includes both malfunctions plus damage caused by sabotage overlayed.

Don't want the feature? Then simply:
1. Delete the seven files titled "Randomised events_19**.cfg"
2. Open "Randomised events.cfg" and DELETE ALL LINES from
;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------MALFUNCTION SETTINGS
to the end of the file.
3. Save and close.

No more malfunctions. And, as a side effect, if you are running NYGM and have already installed the NYGM compatibility fix, then this should eradicate ANY remaining NYGM concerns that exist.

Wait a sec.. I still want to keep the malfunctions and sabotage, but i did install the NYGM fixes. THis doesnt mean i dont have them anymore right??

p.s.. The malfunctions mod is anything before 1944 that just simulates wear and tear, faulty equipment, bla bla. Can i get a list of what exactlly happens if a malfunctions random is used? And the sabotage is anything after June1 1944 that has more extreme damages to boat. SLow speeds, bad rudders stuff like that. I am on my 4th patrol and have yet to notice my boat "malfunctioning". Started in 1939 now in 1940. Maybe im just lucky...

I had Flotilla 1.44 and RUb 1.45. I did a SH3C rollback and installed HT 1.47 for RUb and Chomu's integrated orders with JSGME and finally installed LRT on top of that. I then started a new patrol with SH3C and couldn't use flank speed d/e-motor.

Hmm, :hmm: Could it possibly have something to do with Chomu's integrated orders?

The best way I can recommend for you to see a list is to open SH3 Commander/Cfg/Randomized events.cfg scroll down the list until you come to the ;----------------------------------------------------------------------------------MALFUNCTION SETTINGS
scroll down to see which files are affected, the percentages and a description of the malfunction are included.
example:[Mal1:data\Submarine\NSS_Uboat7b\NSS_Uboat7b.CFG] VIIB model only
;Reduces top speed at Flank speed. Simulates mechanical problems or engine fatigue.
;Randomizes level off depth from crash dive in meters indicative of stuck valves or manifolds controlling incoming water also possible jammed dive planes.
;1939 20% randomization 1 in 5 chance of getting this file
ApplyToPeriod=19390901|19391231 Valid September - December 1939
ChooseFrom=50 Controls the % ratio
RndMidPat=1 Able to be "repaired" mid patrol
0_EngineProperties|AheadStandard=0.70
0_EngineProperties|AheadFull=0.75
0_EngineProperties|AheadFlank=0.80 Upper 3 speeds reduced

1_EngineProperties|AheadStandard=0.70
1_EngineProperties|AheadFull=0.80
1_EngineProperties|AheadFlank=0.90 Upper 3 speeds reduced

2_EngineProperties|AheadStandard=0.70
2_EngineProperties|AheadFull=0.75
2_EngineProperties|AheadFlank=0.10 Upper 3 speeds reduced/Flank dies

3_Properties|CrashDepth=95 ;[70]
4_Properties|CrashDepth=137
5_Properties|CrashDepth=158
6_Properties|CrashDepth=179
7_Properties|CrashDepth=200 5 files affecting your crash dive depth

8_EngineProperties|AheadStandard=0.70
8_EngineProperties|AheadFull=0.75
8_EngineProperties|AheadFlank=0.80
8_Properties|CrashDepth=200 Upper speeds reduced & crash dive depth

9_EngineProperties|AheadStandard=0.70
9_EngineProperties|AheadFull=0.75
9_EngineProperties|AheadFlank=0.10
9_Properties|CrashDepth=200 upper speeds reduced, Flank dies/crash depth affected

There are really too many files and too many different percentages to list.
Also, the VIIB and the IXB will have higher percentages as the years go by as they were earlier models so they've seen a bit more wear and tear.
The XXI Boats have an extremely high percentage of malfunctions as they were problematic from the beginning.
Hope this helps.

As for the NYGM fixes, if you are talking about the visibility and scope fixes they should have no affect on Sabotage/Malfunctions files. I've got both on mine and everything is working as advertized.

I docked at Bessel and after refueling, losing my repairman, qualifying a new repairman, went off to sea and noticed we now have flank speed! It only took one day to repair so it must have been a missing spare. I think I was leaking fuel also, I docked with eight unused torpedoes.

It would be nice if it was possible to add some text message when a malfunction is detected. Or maybe write a "troubleshooting manual" that explains all the malfunctions that can happen.

Thanks for a great mod anyway! :)

Err.. something is wrong.. I opene sh3commanderfile/cfg and guess what. NO RANDOMIZED FOLDER... hmm... No idea how that happened.

Open SH3 Commander /Cfg
There should be a Randomized events Cfg file plus 7 Randomized events dated files. The individual yearly files contain the Malfunctions settings only. The Randomized events file contains both the Malfunctions and the Sabotage files-they are a merged set. On my setup I kept the dated files but installed them in a folder to keep things straight.

There is also a Random folder all by itself at the bottom-this is not what you're looking for.

If you don't see this then you may need to uninstall/reinstall Commander 2.6(after rollback of course)

Seems everything is in order. Maybe im just lucky and havent experienced a very castrophic failure yet.

But i have also installed the necessary fixes that came with NYGM for Sh3 Commander. Im not talking about the visual sensors and peri, but the other one.

Keep in mind that the way the mod works is extremely subtle. The scope may blurr for 20 seconds vs 10, the standard dive time may be increased by 30 or 40 seconds, the turn rate is not as tight as it should be etc.
There are "catastrophic" files but the majority fall into the catagory of annoyances-altho some are larger annoyances than others.

Would be nice if malfunctions showed up at the damage screen and could be repaired. Is there anything like that in the mod now?

Some of the malfunctions files are set to be "repairable" mid patrol just save/exit/relaunch. Others are set to stay with you for the entire mission-sort of a crap shoot.

There's no way that I'm aware of to have the game advise you that something is amiss-that's why a complete test of all systems is essential to avoid surprises.

LOL....Samething happened to me. Ordered a Crash Dive....80m, 90m, 100m, 120m Starting to get concerned, finally leveled out at 180m. I could have interrupted it and set the depth but then you get the "Crash Dive Blues" bug.
