Hi all, it was a long time since i was able to come around.

I've decided to try all the nice things you have build since i was here last time.
But actualy i'm having troubles with simply reinstalling the SH3.

I hope someone can help me as i am realy not understanding what's happening.

So, i've an AMD 2800, 1GB Memory, a soundblaster sound card and windows xp sp2 installed.

I have installed the game more than 10 times (from a fresh install
of Windows XP and last sound drivers for my soundcard.)

But the sound in game don't work correctly.

For exemple i get all the 'environnemental' sounds. But i don't get
the crew message (like the orders to change speed), or the
"ping" to know the depth under keel. I ve tried to install
the game on another computer and it run fine, but
on this one, definitively i can't find what's wrong.

I hope someone can help me with this one.

Thanks in advance.
Stavinsky.

PS : The sound doesn't work from a fresh install of the game, version 1.0, or patched
to 1.4. And puting any sound mod over it don't get it working, so i suspect
it has something to do with the detection tools and setuping done by the game install
(if it does something special ?).

Lower or even disable the hardware sound acceleration (Start, Run, dxdiag, "Sound" tab).

Thanks for the idea Gizzmoe but already tried that.
I wish it was so easy.

I've take even extra steps. Reinstalling windows XP sp2 fully.
Installing the last Directx version i found (april 2006).
Reinstaller fully the sound card with latest drivers.
Did a fresh install of SH3 (damn i hate the Starforce procedure lol)
and tried to play at the v 1.0 out of the box.

Keep doing the same.
I've the music, some of the sounds.
But are missing to action :

Orders from the officer
every annoucement done by the crews (ennemy pinging us, and so on)
Torpedo sounds (only got the motor in chasing one but that's the only sound.)

Very annoying troubles as it realy kill all the atmosphere in the game.
Anyone one got that trouble and found a way out ?
Would i need to patch up the game with every patch
separately to get up to the 1.4 ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I assume you checked in the sound folder to make sure the sound files are there.

I regularly get this problem, and I.ve tried everything....:(

Yes, i've started to check that, and i can play every sounds.
Even the 'TDC' clicks or other sound like that are working perfectly fine with my
sound player, but they don't in game. I've tried every level of sound acceleration
with windows xp.

The worst is that i get this trouble with SH3 only.
I've Il2 Sturmovik fully installed and it work, X3 Reunion and it work.
Empire Earth 2 and again it work with no sound problems.

Gonna try it in one more way, and hope it work or i think i would stop
before getting mad.

See you later.

Have you checked sound levels in sound options when you first start the game ?
The speech may be turned down

Hmm, here is a general question to those having problems, from the time the game did work right on the machine, to the time it stoped, was anything else installed (drivers, hardware, software). As there may be a conflict.

As a general tip you could try rolling back video and soundcard drivers (try using the windows supplied driver for your sound card see if that makes a difference, start with the sound card driver first, then video). I also assume you have no resource conflicts between any of your hardware.

Seems it's a trouble definitively with the game itself.

As i copied the full install on my old computer and it work
perfectly.

Gonna have to see what's wrong with my new one and SH3, as it is the
only thing game/application that has troubles on it.

But i wonder if it has to do with the fact the 'detection tools' of SH3
can't even see i've more than the recommanded materiel to use the game.

When you uninstall do you delete the SH3 folder in my documents also ?
This retains certain files so delete that too

Yes thats a good point.

Actualy that would tend to imply its not directly the fault of the game (ie a bad install etc) but either there is residual settings (as bigboywooly said) or something the game doesnt like about your hardware/software setup on that computer.

I followed bigboywooly`s advice and deleted the documents, reinstalled the game and SH3 commander - problem solved:up:

Well I suspect it is a problem with the main.cfg then
Maybe in future it might pay to have a back up copy of the main.cfg from sh3 in my documents just in case

Well glad you have got it sorted:up:

Thanks, it corrected the troubles for me too.

I have forgotten about that 'features' of windows, the 'my documents' most often bad used by game dev to hide the "save games."

But i still wonder why it kept doing it after the full format
of the windows partition and fresh install.

But i did 2 things finaly. Put another sound car in, and used the solution given here.

Sound card was not enough.

*Gonna make the 'bad sound card' a target practice* ;)

Thanks again. Now i can enjoy fully the Grey Wolf ambiance.

Good hunt to all of you.

Mind sharing the brand names and models of the good and bad sound cards?

The working one is a creative audigy live, the bad one is a Genius Soundmaker 5.1

mm, i should say was. Not sure it could fit anymore in any pc. :-p

*where have you put it ? *
*The crew was needing a small target for the deck gun shooting training.*
