View Full Version : Whats your preferred Torpedo Loadout?
Basic question I havent seen posted alot but which torpedos do you prefer? and use most often.
Me, I prefer the T1s which ive used mostly (havent gotten to 1943 yet) the higher speed settings help alot when fighting off warships when it happens and they rarely let me down, it just annoys me when my uboat keeps getting stocked with TIIs cause for some reason i dont like them:hmm:

I like the ones you can change speed on.
I like to time them for a C2 or T2 by sending the first one slow -- the second medium and the 3rd fast... if I get the timing right they slam into the side of the ship together ....WHAM !.... hmmmm that's satisfaction:smug:

usually i like to load out with the adjustable speed eels not too keen on the other ones but usually have a few just in case i decide to raid a harbour so they cant see the bubbles coming at them.
I've played only until 1942 or so. I play with DiD self-imposed rules, and I'm yet to survive 1942.
Mix of T-Is and T-IIs. T-IIs are actually better vs warships because they're wakeless. They're detected much later than T-Is (At least in daylight).
By having a couple of each eels in my fore torpedo tubes (and one of each aft), I gain flexibility against escorts if I wish to destroy one, against warships if I happen to be in one TF's path (still have to see that happening, though, but one never knows and better to be ready for it just if it happens), and against convoys using the different speeds to properly time a simultaneous attack. Farther targets will be fired at with T-Is, closer ones with T-IIs.

Use mainly T1's But after the T4's come out (Sound tracking) They are good at getting DD's off your back. Usually have those in the stern tubes. The FAT's are ok also later in the war, because they can be shot off at a good distance.

From 43 onwards I use T9s (Ge7es) homeing torps.

I use T1s until around April of 1940, then T2s until Falke are available, then I tend to mix in some of those.
Most players speak of the T2s ability to prevent the target from spotting the wakes, but to me the real advantage is electrics help prevent the enemy from finding the firing position of the sub. I find it is far easier to evade counterattacking escorts when using electric torpedos.

leaving the docks:
Tube 1: T1a
Tube 2: T1a
Tube 3: T3e
Tube 4: T3e
Storage1: T1a
Storage2: T1a
Storage3: T3e
Storage4: T3e
Extra 1: T3e
Extra 2: T3e
All 6 forward external torpedo stores: T1a
Tube 5: T3e
Tube6: T3e
Aft storage1: T1a
Aft storage2: T1a
All aft external torpedo stores: T1a
I honestly dont like electric fish, but the need to have a wakeless torpedo in some siutations is all too great to leave them behind.

I like night attacks. Early in the war I use steam torps with electrics in the rear. I usually take a single electric up front just in case I decide to drop the lead escort (which doesn't always detonate properly). Starting mid-1942, I start taking more electrics up front. When acoustics become available, I usually throw those in the rear; it's easier to drop the lead escort from a stern tube then get turned around for the main convoy shots, than to use a fore tube and try to reload in time to fire for one of the rear ships in the column.
Only steam torps here until '43. I really like their speed. As someone said on this forum, no matter they can see them, if they can't avoid them.
