View Full Version : Attacks on Neutral Harbours

Hello everyone.

I have a question to ask regarding attacks on neutral ports. I took my U-Boat (September 1941) to Istanbul and I destroyed a Greek Tanker inside the harbour. I was submerged when I attack but right afterwards I surfaced and left the harbour without any trouble whatsoever. The Turkish military boats didn’t even bother to move or try to stop me. On another mission I went inside an American harbour and after I hit a couple of British ships (while submerged) I tried to leave. All hell broke loose. Every American military boat was trying to stop me and they opened fire against me.

Now the question. In both cases I did violate the neutrality and the territorial waters of both countries (USA and Turkey). In both cases I did attack only enemy boats and no neutral ones. I do understand from the realism point of view why the Americans attacked me but as far as the game is concerned I cannot understand it. In the Readme file says that neutral units attack you only if you attack first. I haven’t attacked neutral units and the behaviour of the Turkish and the American Navy was different. Any ideas why??? I cannot understand it really.

Thank you very much

Well, I suppose as far as the Americans were concerned, you committed quite an act of aggression, not to say warfare, by sailing into their territorial waters, entering one of their harbours, and sinking vessels there which were going about their law abiding business. You did the same in Turkey but they must not have been so vigilant.

Maybe you had attacked an american ship earlyer and they still considered you a "renegade" so they would attack you anyway.

No I haven't attacked any american ship at all. I was not in a renegate (as far as I know) state. That's why I don't understand the difference in behaviour

The Turks hate the Greeks, and vice-versa. Had you docked at that Turkish port, they probably would have given you a medal. :D

Seriously, though, if you attack a neutral countries ships, that neutral country's assets would have attacked you. You attacked a Greek tanker in Turkish waters. Had it been a Turkish tanker, they would have been all over you.

Did that in NY harbour just before they entered the war,hit an british old liner first, then a T2 and then fired a couple of shots at a Victory cargo but the shot's flew over a US Troop transport (didn't hit) she retaliated and fired back at me but there was a US Clemson DD in the way and she hit the clemson, and soon the Yanks were shooting at themself's I took out all the Brithish ships in the harbour parked my boat in the centre and watched the americans sink each other.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:OMG that's so funny. But something similar has happened to me yesterday I think. I was cruising twards my patrol point somewhere in the AM grid.I was going along the east coast of England since i usuall get a lot of merchants there.I had found a large cargo ship and was tailing it unseen.I fired 2 eels at it but for some reason that bastard changed course right at the last moment or maybe i got my calculations wrong ,and the torpedoes hit the ship about 1 cm inward from the stern and 1 cm inward from the bow,so the b**ch didn't sink. Then from no-where 2 V&W's came along with 3 Armed trawlers.I had no chance submerged since the water was not really deep and DC's would make me mince meat.So i quiclky changed course and fired my aft-eel at one of the V&w's.I was lucky as it probably hit him in the engine and he stoped and couldn't change course. Then he drifted between me and the working destroyer ,and to my surprise the working one pounded the drifting one untill he completely sank it.Then 2 of the trawlers and that idiot merchant that got me here in the first place got in front of him and they too were blown to pieces.I managed to "out-run" the DD after miraculously destroying it's engine with the deck-gun but my hull was about 15 percent ,all rooms were pretty much criticall had flooding everywhere and escaped with only 19 men.
Note that i was in a VII .
