I was disappointed to find a Fiji light cruiser and a Nelson Battleship in Loch Ewe with almost zero support. There were 2 very small battleships patrolling; the kind without active sonar, so all I had to do was loose all my torps at them and sit quiet. Very disappointing.

I'm using the Grey Wolves super-mod by the way. (With the mod I had expected to see gashes in the side of the ships I sunk but probably due to the armour I didn't see any, although the bottom of the hull did show scorch marks when the Fiji turned-turtle).

It is also discussed here;

Stay out of harbours then. Apart from a very small handful of daring raids (like the Scapa Flow raid of course), it's not like German U-boats raided Allied harbours on a regular basis.

When reading these forums it sometimes seems like people spent more time infiltrating harbours than wrecking havock along the convoy lanes. But to each his/hers own of course. :D

Thats what mines and subnets are for. Your not exactly going to find HK groups cruising harbors. ;)

exactly, raiding harbours wasnt a the done thing!!! if you did that you would probably get a mutiny from ya crew and classed as suicidal

In late War some ports are guarded with V&W's and Flower and some Hunter Class Destroyers

I started an Career in 1943 (stock game) 27Flotilla and went to an island down of italy and I nailed the V&W, Hunter Class....but the flower corvette kicked my ass into the sea bottom:down: I feel really embarrased...

Hmm... I'm not sure about some of the replies; "why put them there" I ask?!

On the assumption you mean, "why put ships in harbors", well, i'll answer that question, with a question. In your travels, how often have you seen a harbor totally devoid of any ships?

So, from what i can gleam from this thread, you would rather have, totally empty harbors. That can easily be arranged, just load the SH3 mission editor, go to your sh3/data/campaigns/campaign directory, open Campaign.scr, and remove all the harbor traffic. Go nuts with it, its your game. While there you may notice that harbors arent exactly totally undefended. But.... *shrug* whatever floats your boat.

You could do the exact opposite. You could in concievably make every port a recreation of the "atlantic wall" and place shore batteries, ramp up the minefields and subnets, and toss in some elite HK groups consisting of an escort carrier, 10 aircraft, and 10 DE's. So if thats what you want in your game, theres nothing stopping you from doing it, go for it and have fun.

Continuing on with the theme, I've seen some screenshots of New York harbour (Statue of Liberty 'n all that) so a chance-meeting with a refuelling sub in the mid atlantic provided a boost to get to the America's East Coast.

Last night I crawled in under darkness and found something like a dozen ships with only a handfull of weak PT boats buzzing around. Among them is a cruise ship and several large cargo ships, so I'm going to have some fun later today :o

Yes I wanted to see what NY looks like .I'm early in my carrer 1941 so US is still neutral no resistance in harbour but it's very interesting to see Statue of Liberty and bridges
