View Full Version : The best US ocean fishing locations...
My dad just got back from a fishing vacation in Key West Florida. Great fun, nice restraunts, good beachs, great water and great fishing. We're thinking about going on another ocean fishing trip next year but can't decide whether we want to go back to Key West or try another location...
... does anyone have any good suggestions on a great ocean fishing trip? Preferrably one with a pretty established tourist economy (nice hotels, good restrauts, etc) and with available charters for a day or two in the open ocean.
Any idea/ experiences welcome. Thanks.

I used to go spear/pier fishing when I lived near SanDiego. The sea bass is great (if you're quick enough to get them that is). Just remember to knock out those bastards' teeth before you try to handle their mouth....teeth hurt. I learned that lesson once and got it the first time around, and I'm glad it wasn't me that was bitten.

I used to do alot of ocean fishing with my dad growing up. Best ocean fishing, im a bit.... ummm i dunno. grumpy about. Fishing off our shores (pacific) has never been the same after japan came through with their gill nets and decimated the fish populations off just off our coasts. At least thats been my understanding of it. Man i miss the Albacore runs. Would be out on 2 weeks on long range boats easy, and score serveral gunny bags full of some really large yellowfin and albacore. Not anymore.

Did some fishing for Salmon and Halibut up by Alaska a few years back. Lots of fun, caught our fair share and tasted excellent. Great trip, got to see the glacier up there along with all kinds of other outdoor adventures.

I was given a gift of 5-6 old fly rods and 3 boxes of flys as a kid. Every year we camped up along the North Fork of the Yuba between Camptonville & Downieville. There are some great fishing spots there along about 20 miles of the Yuba. Also up along Hat Creek near Shasta. I used to fish with a Washoe Indian boy my age. It was totally cool because any fish we caught were Lloyd's and he had treaty rights. Also used to see some folks take out good quantities of Placer gold. The Double Eagle in Alleghany was still producing gold the last I heard. An old high-school friend has 10 acres near San Andreas in the Central Sierra's. He's in the prospector's assn. and has panned all up & down the Sierras.

Outer Banks of North Carolina. My friend has a 40 footer we take out a lot. Not far to get to the Gulf Stream from there. Great fishing and there are a lot of charter boats there.
The best US ocean fishing locations?.. Simple!!.. Mexico!! :know:
If you are looking for a good place where you will stay on land at night and fish during the day try the east cape (La Paz, Cabo, southern Baja California). If you are looking to get into some "fish of a lifetime" type fishing, the long range boats out of San Diego are a great place to start your search.
I prefer the long range boat fishing myself.. and the long range boats are quite plush.. kind of like being on a cruise ship that you fish off of.
Some of the better boats are:
The Independence (http://www.independencesportfishing.com/)
The Royal Polaris (http://www.royalpolaris.com/)
The Red Rooster III (http://www.redrooster3.com/)
This last Feb. I was out on the Independence and.....

As long range boats go, i remember having been out on the Royal Polarius, and the Qualifer 105. Used to catch tuna like that fairly reguarlly. We'd be up all night filleting fish, and canning fish for two days. Good times. These days the long range boats are just too damn expensive.
