View Full Version : Freezing issue...
Suddenly my game started freezing in mid patrol, especially in storms. I tried everything tweaking the sound accelaration, reinstalling, switching to desktop...
Nothing worked until I tweaked the anisotropic filtering of my nvidia geforce 4 Ti 4600, from "application controlled" to "4x". No more freezes! Although the game started "lagging"...
I wonder if there can be some sort of memory leakage?
Anyone with ideas on how to solve this matter? I know alot of people have had the same problem as I...

yeah i have the same trouble i have an ATi x700 256mb and i slow down too especially when near a convoy even if i havent detected the convoy yet i still know that ill get a message within a few seconds telling me where it is lol
It's not a video problem, It's the fact that there are a lot of ships to be put into memory & the computer has a lot of work to do making sure they all function correctly!:D It's either faster CPU needed or Ram, the latter would be the cheapest & best likely to fix the problem. (IMHO)
Cheers.
Hm looks like I have two choices...
1. Lagfree gamingexperience with freezes->reboots...
2. Laging gamingexperience without freezes->reboots...
What is this anisotropic filtering?

I had similar issues with my rig, and it turned out to be a video issue when I had updated to newer drivers, apparently the older software didn't uninstall. Over at 3Dguru, I found a little utility that removes all ATI software, and after using it and reinstalling the latest drivers, I've not had any problems, and more stable fps too, no longer any problems with jumpimg from 30 to 90 fps with an annoying stutter too. Also no longer have distorted sound either. The game runs at 20 to 30 fps solid depending on what's going on. Lower fps for lots of things, and higher fps while cruising the shipping lanes.
If you've recently updated any drivers, try uninstalling them and searching for any left overs, then clearing the registry of anything related to the component that's being updated, then reinstall the drivers. You may want to turn off all the options in your vid setup too, and then add them back one by one, to see where it starts to wig out on you.
I've not had an Nvidia card for a year now, the 256 GTS was the last one.
Well I got "driver cleaner pro" and cleaned my new nvidia drivers out. I then tested them again with the same problem. I cleaned them out AGAIN and installed nvidias 78.01 drivers and the game runs stable! I think nvidias new drivers stink...
By the way I have a framerate between 10-20, is than normal? Can I increase it?
Thanks for all input!:)

Well that would depend on your computer specs.
BTW what kind of sound hardware do you have.
The only time I had a problem with this game was due to my on board sound.
I went into dxdiag and turned sound acceleration to basic. Since then it has never crashed on me.
Please give us your computer specs, this will aid in finding the best fix for the least bucks!:D I have 2 computers, both have the same problem when near large convoys & it's not the video, both have only 1gig ram & the best way to fix this would be an increase to 2 gig! I haven't bothered as the slow down is not bad enough to warrent the extra expense.:D Once again IMHO.
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 1.1 GHz (I know it's to slow!)
RAM: 1024 MB
Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600(128MB)
Sound: SiS 7012 (Think it's onboard sound!)
Mainboard: MSI 745 ultra
DirectX 9.0c
XP +SP2
Forgotten something?
Actually the game works nice, with nice smooth graphics. The only problem being stuttering during torpedoehits, explosion and harbortaxiing. Can this be fixed without buying a new machine? Do you experience the same thing? I can live with it though as it's a great game with the mods...

This is not too bad for a Ti4600. You can increase it some by reducing the particle setting in the game options. I always ended up running older drivers on both my 4600 and my 5600, (but not the 6600) so I understand your position on newer drivers.
I had already lowered particles down to 20 which made the gameplay smoother. I now lowered the particles down to 10 and 5 which made the game unstable again!? It seems that when I get the gameplay as smooth as I want it, it gets unstable and freezes...
Should I uncheck the high quality textures?
Also explosion particles don't seem connected to the particle setting, just smoke and waterspray? This make my game suck in the single mission Bismarck!
Any suggestions?:hmm:

Put it at whatever setting works best ;) I would set it as high as it will comfortably run. Good luck with it.
