G'Day all. It is my pleasure to announce the Submarine forums quiz thread created.

This is a thread where users of the forum may challenge other members, ask very tricky questions or have them identify something.

The rules are easy:

The first one to post the correct answer to a question, posts a new question and so on.

IMPORTANT!

In case no new question has appeared within 24 hours since the last one was solved, ANY other forum member may post a new question. Only one question at a time please.

I'll start:

I am looking for a specific sub class/single sub.

Hints:

Only one was ever built.

In one important way it's design purpose was unique compared to ALL other submarines in the world! It did not, however operate in the conditions it was designed for.

It was the [won't tell, would be too easy] submarine in ANY navy of the world at the time.

Was used operationally.

Scrapped in Belgium.

It had one 12.7mm MG.

Good Luck!

I am the first civilian ship ship sunk by a submarine during the WW II, what is my name (and subsequantly the submarine, captain and crew names :D)

Cunard passenger liner Athenia of 13,581 tons,

German submarine U-30 (Oblt. Fritz-Julius Lemp) on the opening day of the Second World War, the captain believing it to be an armed merchant cruiser.

The ship was carrying evacuees from Liverpool to Canada. There were 1,103 passengers not including crewmembers. Survivors were rescued by the British destroyers Electra, Escort and Fame and the freighters City of Flint and Southern Cross, but 118 passengers were drowned. Also on board were 316 Americans of whom 28 were lost. Oblt. Lemp was never court-martialled for this error but next day Hitler ordered that under no circumstances were attacks to be made on passenger ships.

Yes the ship did it in the Pacific;)

Ok it was a DE built during WW II and named after a Naval officer who died on the USS Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

USS Bennion (DD-662)

New question will come in ~8 hours.

No that is not correct.

The Bennion was DD.

The ship that sunk 5 Japanese subs in 8 days was a DE.

USS Barber (DE-161)?:damn:

Nope.

Ok one more hint and this will probably give it away.

While the ship is named after an Ensign who died on the Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor, it also is the name of a country.

Tough question!

In the winter/spring of 1942, the crew of the Finnish submarine fleet received training in using a new underwater respirator. What was the name of this specific underwater respirator brand?

(If it is too hard I'll have another one ready)

Too hard? I've got another one waiting, an "identify it" one. . .

Sir Big Jugs
07-12-06, 09:29 AM
Ok this is a LOT easier.

Identify:

a) The type of this gun (deck gun, aa gun, submachine gun, etcetera)
b) The name of the model of the gun
c) It's caliber
d) What U-boat it is mounted on
and
e) How many rounds are there in one magazine for this gun.

The person with the most right answers gets to go next.

It is a unit award given by the Navy as a result of that unit engaging or being engaged by the enemy. Seeing action basically.

I don't have the full definition handy.
