View Full Version : New SH3 Maps Available
Miss Behavin
07-05-06, 11:32 AM
After numerous days of painstaking effort and countless screenshots, the Gridmap from SH3 is now available at 72 pixels per inch.
Here is a sample of a tiny portion of the map in actual view.
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h188/Trudi_Hartmann/SAMPLE.jpg
If you were to print it out, it would measure 12'-4" x 6'-2"
However for those who do not desire the entire map, I have also split it into smaller portions:
The WHOLE Thing! SH3Map.zip @ 48.8MB (Unzipped 167MB)
http://rapidshare.de/files/25032348/SH3MAP.zip.html or
http://files.filefront.com/SH3MAPzip/;5235306;;/fileinfo.html (18MB)
Northern_Hemisphere.zip @ 27.3MB (Unzipped 81.7MB)
http://rapidshare.de/files/25034707/Northern_Hemisphere.zip.html
Southern_Hemisphere.zip @ 20.9MB (Unzipped 79MB)
http://rapidshare.de/files/25041778/Southern_Hemisphere.zip.html
Grid_Area_Only.zip @ 14.6MB (Unzipped 43.6MB)
http://rapidshare.de/files/25042951/Grid_Area_Only.zip.html
I have left them in .BMP format to maintain clarity.
As the XO of 7.UnterSeebootsflottille at “Wolves at War,” I find it useful in planning patrols and the like by using the map that the players will be seeing and by having ALL of the grid numbers filled in without having to load up SH3 to get them.
It could use some touching up in regards to color but all the ‘important’ stuff is there. I’m tired of this project.
Hope you find it useful.
Regards,
P.S. I have just finished uploading them but didn’t see them on their site. I am assuming they won’t be available until they get placed in the proper download area.

Can you download them to rapidshare or file front? U-Boat.realsim has been down for a long time for new files.

irish1958 thks for that info-also coverted it---are you saying to place it into the the actual sh3 commander 2.6 folder on the hard drive or into a sub folder of that??-- i couldn't find a folder labeled "documents" inside my sh3 commander file.
sorry if this sounds like a boneheaded question.

Place it in Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\Documents, but you need to rename the map that is there to _old. That map is available in the game in GW by pulling it down from the upper left in the f5 map screen.

This map looks cool, but the original map in SHIII doesn't have nearly as many cities marked on it as this new map. From where did the extra cities come? Is it data in SHIII that is never displayed or do cities appear at different times during the war?

Its a map from one of the mods - not sure which one but they all have more cities than the original game

I had no problems downloading the zip file from Filefront. It took 30 seconds. The map came out in gif format. All I need to know is how to slit up the map into 8 1/2 x 11 sections in other to print them out.
From what I see, you did a great job Miss Behavin. It must have taken you a long time to get all the grids in there.
I have the original Aces of the Deep grid map which size is 23" x 14" and is in 6 sections in zip format but you have to put them together.
It is posted at my Enemy Beneath web site.
I also understand that JScones has reported that a much larger version is available:
"There's a really good A2 sized coloured reproduction available from a guy on ebay every now and again - I've bought two - they're about $6 plus postage."

Is it a mod for a new in-game map?

Can anyone who has downloaded this map and was able to print it out to use it on a backboard, how did you split it into sections suitable for printing out 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper so I can paste them all together to make the full map.
Printing this map out will be a bit easier if you use legal size paper... 8x14.
Use a program like IFranview or HyperSnap and convert the map to jpeg format. Remember jpeg files are smaller than bmps. Then find the the scale of a section that you want to fit 8x14" paper and then take screen shots of each section. I have a feeling it'll take a lot of paper and ink no matter what you do. ;)
The idea of putting it in SHIII Commander 2.6 sounds like the best route to follow.
Miss B.... great work. JWD S!
BTW, not to pick on the file but a note only. Changing from bmp to jpeg brought the size down from 43.6mb to 1.08mb. Just as clear, saves room too, and would make an easier download.
But, still a great job Miss B.

I wish to place the map in there, but I have a couple of questions first. 1) what was the size of your map in jpeg format? Mine is 10651 x 5357. 2) the map in the documents folder is only 2834 x 2400. 3) Was the map in document called SH3_map
Did you reduce the size of your map in jpeg format to the same size as that of the one in the documents folder.
I use the stock SH3 + SH3Commander 2.5
Robj, anyone on broadband can download a zipfile of that size in 30 seconds. It's the ones on dialup that can't and I'm trying to help. The one I got was Grid Only and was a bmp, I checked the Properties... sorry I didn't make that clear before. And it has all kinds of cities on the map too.
As for using the map you have, make it the same size as the one you want to replace.

You mean there were no cities on the map you got, what do you mean grid ONLY.
Yep, the zip is named Grid_Area_Only.zip with the bmp. There are many cities on it.... more than the stock SHIII map.

Don't know what mine will look like as I'm still on a mission. Will install it when I get to port.

The "Grid Area Only" map is the 'cropped' section of the SH3 'In-Game' map that only has the Kriegsmarine grid on it (with a little bit of extenison beyond that.
The overall map is much larger. I provided this for those who are not interested in see what lies beyond the grid.
As for Rotterdam, that's A Ubisoft issue. I didn't change anything on this map. All I did was a LOT of screenshots, cropping, then pasting it all together.
Also, I have been asked what mod provides the abundance of ports beyond the stock game. I cannpt speak for other mods that may do the same, but the one i am using that does this is the NYGM War Tonnage 2.0 mod.

But the Nav Map in the SH3 stock map provided for the game already has the grid numbers for the grids. ie: AL18.

Robj250,
I didn't change the size of the map when I decided to utilize it in SH3CMDR. You are right, the grids are the same. The advantage is when you call up the map in CMDR the grids are there, so if you want to choose a particular grid to go to , or want to see what grid you have been assigned, it is right there in CMDR. Before, you had to start the game to find where the grids were.
robj250

irish1958
That's correct. The grids are there, but I have no idea what the map ratio is when you load her map into SH3 using SH3Commander because I'm not even going to attempt to use it even though I use SH3Commander.
But you will notice that her map encompasses a greater land mass than does the original SH3 map.
Her map is 10651 x 5357 and the SH3 map is 2834 x 2400.
SH3 map:
[img=http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/8572/0044qw2.th.jpg] (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0044qw2.jpg)
Her map:
[img=http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/1047/0043fu1.th.jpg] (http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0043fu1.jpg)
If you will look at the bottom of her map, you will see than there is a greater land mass, whereas there is NO bottom land mass in the SH3 map.
Also: her map is rectangular, while the SH3 map is almost square, which makes her map way out of respective ratio.
So, when I adjust her map to the size of the SH3 map which is 2834 x 2400 this is what I get:[img=http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/5045/0045bu9.th.jpg] (http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0045bu9.jpg)
