Today a friend of mine who is an auctioneer had another one of his estate auctions. At the auction in one of the box lots was a UPS. I have always wanted one but never got around to getting one. I had to help clear the house out and saw it prior to auction start. I thought he would sell it individually but I guess not. Anyway the box lot went for a whopping $1. The UPS seems to be in good condition, however I know nothing about them. It didn't come with a manual. I'm leery about plugging the computer into it not knowing anything about it. I tried looking for info on it on the Internet but couldn't find much. I tried IBM's website but it didn't have anything. Do any of you know anything about this particular UPS?

Granted, I know it's not a IBM...but the pictures of the IBM model and the Tripplite look like they were cloned.

If you're leery of the untried UPS you could always test it out first by running a few lamps (with about 3-400W total) and an alarm clock off it for a couple days. The lamps will put a load on it while the alarm clock (use a digital one with no battery backup in it), will let you know if the UPS is delivering continuous power or not. Also during this testing period you can simulate a couple power failures by pulling the plug and seeing how long it takes to drain the power completely before charging it back up again. Its good practice to completely drain an UPS every 6 months or so anyway to maximize battery life.

They probably were. Like a lot of the big brand names, IBM puts a lot of stuff out under its own logo that it doesn't actually make. Almost guaranteed the UPS is actually made by Tripplite.

Thanks guys. That test is a really good idea. I hadn't thought about doing that. I could also probably dig out the old computer and use that as my test subject.

Thanks for the links, too. That user manual is very useful even if for the TrippLite model.
