"Five American soldiers have been accused of raping an Iraqi woman then killing her along with three members of her family, including a child, before burning their bodies to destroy the evidence.
Military officials in Baghdad said yesterday that the men were the subject of a criminal investigation after two soldiers from the same infantry platoon came forward with information about the alleged incident. A week-long preliminary inquiry had established that there was sufficient evidence to proceed.
One soldier is reported to have been arrested after admitting his role in the incident, while four others have had their weapons taken away."

Ofcourse !
Thats just a mather of statistics. Rape and Murder is committed by a certain percentage of the pupulation. That percentage includes Millitary, priests, sweet school teachers, brothers, and the guy working at the news paper stand on the corner.

Right... rape and murder... just a statistic.
Edit: there are a few things about this that I find particularly notable:
It involved 4 or 5 perpetrators (depending on the article you look at); unlike the Haditha incident, it was reportedly a "crime of opportunity" (and not done in the heat of battle); three members of her family were killed and the house burned down to cover it up; the incident was initially attributed to sectarian violence (until someone came forward).
Its also a little different from a crime committed by "priests, sweet school teachers, brothers, and the guy working at the news paper stand on the corner" because:
a: None of the above are armed by a foreign occupying power;
b: None of the above are responsible, as an occupying power, for maintaining the security of the people;
c: None of the above are engaged in fighting an insurgency and "winning the hearts and minds of the people".

That comes with every war. I have predicted things like Abu Graib, this mess now, or guerilla warfare emerging after the field battle and later switching to terror and civil war even beoire the invasion 2003 and was bashed for that. Not the first and not the last incident of this kind. Maybe one should not be so enthusiastic about going to war, then. "Krieg vertiert" (E. Bahr).

I was never in favour of it and felt quite relieved when our PM declined the "invitation" to join. But you cannot just dismiss this stuff as "inevitable" or "merely a statistic" either; after all, the US is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions and has a responsibility, as an occupying power, to respect them - as do those in its military (which is why these incidents are naturally being investigated and why, if there is guilt, the perpetrators will presumably be held accountable).
Edit: there's another factor here that makes this intriguing:
This happened back in March. In June two soldiers from the same regiment were kidnapped, killed, and mutilated which was what prompted one of the accused in the March rape incident to come forward (according to various articles). The coincidences, timeline, and circumstances of the confession lead me to speculate as to if the kidnappings were prompted as retaliation for the March rape/murders - not that the insurgencies seem to need any excuse to commit their own atrocities, mind you (and therefore the two incidents could easily be completely unrelated). However the enemy's ability to recruit among the disaffected, its ability to hold grudges and inflict stupendous brutality all indicate to me just how important it is to scrupulously follow the Geneva Conventions and punish those who violate them; else who knows how more civilians decide to join the insurgency and perpetrate brutality of their own in reprisal.
I pity the people over there - both the military trying to do an uneviable job and those simply trying to live their lives in this hellhole.
In defence of Drebbel, I dont think he is limiting the tragedy to that of a simple statistic but making the point that In a certain population...whatever the population you will have a certain percentage of bad apples. Like in a city or 150,000 people you may have 20 rapes and 15 murders in a year. Well, when you have 150,000 troops you are going to get similar statistics (actually the percentages of crimes commited are lower for military personel from what I have heard, when this was discussed during desert storm).
If it turns out they are guilty, they deserve never to see the light of day again, or breath free air. (If I were in favor of the death penalty this would be one instance considering the circumstances where a firing squad would be in order).

I'm not sure what your curiousity or confusion is about. A criminal is a criminal, even if he's whering a uniform. These guys should be prosecuted and it sounds like its already underway.

Yep - simple statistics. Actually, if this is the only incident, then it is a low statistic as suggested.

PS. Read up on Napoleonic times - this happened then too as well as throughout history.

Apparently this was planned and premeditated, which under US Military law does make them eligible for the death penalty - if the allegations are true and they are convicted.

If I lived in a city of 150,000 where the rape of a woman and killing of her family was so common as to be regarded as simply "a statistic" (that is, a norm) I would move. I live in a city of 180,000 and I don't think there's been a single rape/murder here in the 10 years that I've lived here so this behaviour is not normal to me. And there are nowhere even close to 20 rapes or 15 murders per year here. I would say that if things in your own societies have gotten this degenerate than perhaps you'd have been a lot smarter and better off to spend that $200 billion on fixing your own rape and murder problems rather than trying to fix someone elses.

Yes, but your city isn't mired in violence as a way of life is it? Move your 180,000 to Iraq and see what happens. Military services are not all filled with perfect citizens.

That's a bit circular. Is the rape and murder of a woman and her family the norm in cities where the US Military is stationed in peacetime? If the National Guard responds to a domestic crisis and there is looting and violence, would Americans like yourself expect some of them to take that as an opportunity to commit premeditated rape and murder? Or is it merely expected because the woman who was raped and then murdered, along with her family, happened to be Iraqi, and therefore somehow less than human anyway?

Ah, I see. You want an argument.
Afraid you really aren't going to get one. There really isn't anything to argue about. I think you want me to defend the incident for some reason but it's not going to happen.
I will however expand on the military in peacetime and wartime. The peacetime miliary is kept strictly supervised and disiplined. Wartime on the other hand is not so strictly supervised and disiplined. It's impossible too. What could get you busted in peacetime will get you nothing but an eye roll in wartime. It's harder to control your soldiers because they are more spread out and communication is done by radio ( in a city enviroment). You expect and trust that your soldiers will do the right thing. If they do the wrong thing as in rape and murder and it is found out they will be disiplined under the Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMF). What more could you expect? No military force in the world has a pych test to see how you will react under the pressures of combat that I am aware of. You put a loaded firearm in someones hands and they change and thats a fact. Skybird might have a twenty page essay on the subject somewhere dealing with the subject. I'm not going to get into it.
You are under the mistaken impression that soldiers are supposed to be knights in shining armour and we are in the age of chivalry. I find that amusing. You have good and bad just like any society and you trust that justice will prevail as it will in this case.
To expect everyone in an armed force to be perfect gentlemen is pretty delusional. That hasn't happened in the age of mankind yet and it won't in the future.

An army is no representative image of society. It is still mostly a male society, and it only attracts - in non-conscript armies - people with an interest in that. And sociological reserach probably reveals that certain social groups are over- (under-) represented. So the argument that the army reflects the ammount of crime to be expected from civil society, necessarily must be distorted a bit. the first is not representative for the latter. But the overall climate and mood may change and influence the spirit inside an army. For example I am very much aware that British soldiers and officers behave and talk in different and mnore relaxed way than many German ones. the tradition in both armies is different.
But all that is not so much decisive, I think.Decisive is that EVERY man, civilian as military as well, will change and will be affected by the presence of violance of that scale over a long time, with his life at risk for so long, with situations he do not see meaning in, and the genral situation of chaos that war necessarily brings. War changes man's mind and attitude, and for the worst it does so. That's no question of guilt or non-guilt, it simple a reality of human nature - man bears so much, and beyond that he brakes, in whatever that symptom will show up: hate, frustration that leads to vandalism or an attiude tnot to care for life anymore. It has always been that way in every war ever fought, and it will always be like that. That's why it is "war", and not a picnic in the park. By the way an army is trained and lead, and the spriit that is held alive in it, the time-factor and the degree to which such barbaric things happen can be influenced: but it cvannot be totally prevented. All you can do is examine what happened, and force the ones guilty to accept legal consequences by military code of law - that's what it is there for.
"Krieg vertiert." War turns men into dogs. If you don't want to see it happen, don't wage war.

Well said, and in fact I don't expect the armed forces to behave as chivalarous knights. This is actually a very good arguement as to why the US Military had no business "liberating" Iraq from its own government, unless of course they themselves would not succumb to the same behaviour that Saddam Hussein's henchmen had partaken in. But as you say, this is an impossible standard and the brutality of acts such as this and warfare in general completely undermines the "liberation" rationale for the war. Perhaps that's what Skybird was getting at (I won't put words in his mouth, and besides, he can write his own essays on this and probably already has :)).
I won't say you're guilty of this, because I don't know your feelings on the subject, but there seems to me to be a definite disconnect among those who advocated the war on humanitarian grounds but are curiously silent on this subject, or else simply dismiss it as "statistics", the "heat of battle", etc. I mean collateral damage is one thing, and that's been dismissed from the outset as a "necessary evil", but this is a whole other thing to me. Especially after Abu Ghraib and Haditha - and especially in light of the fact that there is still no end to this occupation in sight.

Nobody likes to be told their side is doing something wrong. I don't like being told that something I was a part of for so long is commiting atrocities. But I also know that sh!t happens and it can't be ignored.
I also think that the general public is so used to hearing about violence, day in and day out that they have become anesthetized to it and are able to just shrug it off and say stuff happens..

To be honest I hadn't seen anything on the bombing until after I posted this article. I decided not to post another Iraq article, one on the bombing, because to people such as myself who have been following events there this past three years, it is nothing new. But it is stupid to criticize me for what I didn't post - what am I CNN? If you think that is newsworthy then post it yourself instead of getting pissy with me.

Nope, I was not trolling. Not everyone watches the news (I know I don't watch it everyday), and even for those that do its hard to discuss current events with CNN - which is what makes "General Discussion" forums like this one useful and interesting.

I posted, as my topic headline, the headline that appeared in the article that I linked to. If you don't like the headline then take it up with those who wrote the article - they wrote it, not me. And if you don't like the content of the article then why shoot the messenger? I only posted an article here that had struck me as newsworthy, which is a common enough occurence here in General Discussion.
As to the "whining and sniveling" comment, the only thing I have to say to that is get off your high horse Mr. Holier-than-thou. You are a walking contradiction. One day you are throwing your religion around to preach to the unbelievers on Subsim, the next its your nationality. The common denominator in both cases being a misplaced sense of entitlement leading you to believe your opinion, as a Christian or an American, puts your opinion above anyone else's and that you can use whichever is more applicable to berate and insult those you disagree with. Sorry Ice, that doesn't cut it with me.

Hear hear. Just posting an article to stirr up things and even without adding anything to it your self is totally useless imho. This is not a news paper, this is a forum !
which is what makes "General Discussion" forums like this one useful and interesting.
You did not do any discussion or even try to make the forum interesting, you just did a copy and paste job. You just dumped a news paper article in the forums to stirr up things. No comments from you at all.
Seems too many people focus on the same subject, political discussions in these forums seem to be very narrow minded focussed on 1 or 2 subjects. Why not even try to find a different interesting article (like i.e the newest technology China uses to flood the invaded country of Tibet with fresh Chinese people) But you choose an easy subject that is already in the head lines all over the world.
Too many people make this General Forum a "Fart Alarm Forum" ---> when ever America farts it will be posted here.

I posted no comments in my initial post because the convention here, with newspaper articles, seems to be to post either first post the entire article or just a link to it - instead I posted part of the artcle and a link to it to keep the initial post short but still provide some substance (there was even a discussion about this recently). Would you like some examples of this as they are everywhere in this forum? Why you are jumping on me for doing this, given that I rarely ever even post articles of any kind here, I don't know.

Again I don't know why you're picking this particular bone with me - why not sticky something about it up top rather than grind this axe with someone who rarely starts new threads and in a thread that not many people are even reading? Also, btw, at the same time I posted this article I posted a humourous article that was not on politics so again you're grinding this axe on the wrong person. As to the Tibet article I didn't know this forum was "General Discussions about Tibet" - I thought "General Discussions" meant General Discussions - my mistake.
But you choose an easy subject that is already in the head lines all over the world.
As I said in my previous post, one cannot have a discussion with CNN. If you look through this thread and not at the initial post, you will see that I made several comments throughout it (not being aware when I made them that I was required to pre-emptively put all my comments in my initial post, unlike everyone else here) and again I mistakenly thought "General Discussion" was for General Discussions (and not for being berated by another forum member for having the nerve to post an article that he did not like, but still read anyway, or a mod who seems more interested in selectively moderating the topics to conform to his interest in Tibet rather than anything else).
Too many people make this General Forum a "Fart Alarm Forum" ---> when ever America farts it will be posted here.
Again, you're directing this at the wrong person. Also last I checked, Iraqis (the people that were killed in the article I posted) are not American and Iraq (where the incident occurred) is not part of the US. And for that matter, as I understand it, the Iraq debate long predates my arrival here. :arrgh!:

I wasn't making an arguement out of the Stalin quote Skybird. My feeling is that this type of incident should not be dismissed as just inevitable, or merely a statistic, yet all too often when these incidents happen to nameless people that is exactly the reaction that is gotten. It is part of human nature, I suppose, and that is where the truth lies in this famous quote by Stalin (who knew this first hand).

Germany granted an extra 20+ million Euros payment some days ago :dead:, and most politicians of our (and the European) left still insist that Palestinians are not responsible for having voted Hamas into office. :dead: The sig, of course, also with regard to the general european attitude towards Muslim countries. Tbqh, the squabling on this thread is without purpose (isnt it always?). Sounds to me like some of you chaps ought to chill out a tad and not 'shoot first, ask question later' when it comes to peoples motivation for posting- to take the posting of a news article as some kind of implied national slurr reveals a good deal more than the content of the atricle itself.
Would it have been so worthy of pique had it been a case of an iraqi unit commiting the offense? Probably not, missing the point entirely: possibly a nasty bit of crime has been commited and a coverup attempt made by those who are responsible for integrity and disciplin in the field. It's news, not america bashing. The same was said of the British a while back concerning beatings meeted out to 'civilians' etc.
I know it's a past 'theme' here on subsim for lively debate where america and her foreign aspirations are concerned (thought not exclusively), but really, it sounds very parochial sometimes .
What can I say, you can't fight a war these days without every man and his dog wanting to have an oppinion to share about it - if you're gonna get your hands dirty, then expect people to comment on the smell. I can't say it's a 'revalation' unless that's said toungue in cheek?
Well, there's deffinitely a sense of caution and perhaps guarded suspicion of such articles as this given the recent spate of serious allegations directed at troops and the whole tone of coalition opperations in Iraq and the reasons for being there in the first place. Nobody likes to be told their side is doing something wrong. I don't like being told that something I was a part of for so long is commiting atrocities. But I also know that sh!t happens and it can't be ignored. and I'm not implying some sort of criticism here - nor boldly stating it, for that matter.
Understandably some topics are best aproached with caution (especially around here sometimes ;) ) but occasionally it seems as if there's an anticipation or pre-emptive thought that one should expect every topic of this sort should be considered a dig at the US or the military in Iraq. Scandium even said I pity the people over there - both the military trying to do an uneviable job and those simply trying to live their lives in this hellhole. hardly having a real dig?
Maybe this is expressed in terms of national pride (in a good way? I'm not sure I have the right term there 'national' in this instance) and an understanding not to condemn but to support, sometimes vociferously, regardless of the full story being investigated. A similar thing occured on another forum I visit concerning the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes: as soon as the news was released that a man had been shot to death on the london underground, as a suspected terrorist, a thread immideately appeared titled 'We got one of the bastards...' a little premature in the event.
Dismissing a discussion as mere trolling is a bit forwards (maybe subsim has a more highbrow trolling content than elsewhere? hehe) though maybe I'm being overly generous there?
I don't think it matters who is responsible for rape and murder as soldiers, so long as something is seen to be investigated, as it appears to be in this case. That these are american troops is irrelevant, they might as well be British for all the difference it makes. Regardless, it's news worth discussing with the days unfolding events. On the whole this article or scandiums reference to it is no more a criticism of the US army (or its intentions in iraq) based upon a minority of squaddies than the initial reporting of the article in the news headlines is a critique of the US military.
Following my comment on not caring what others think, I allude to the gentle stereotype of the brash american, similarily we english are seen as tea drinking chaps who wear bowler hats and read the times who say things like 'jolly good' and 'righto' and 'I say..!' in that insufferably polite english mannerism.
I guess such reactions are to be expected with some of the times facing the world these days, but I always remember being told by my mother that if you go through life with a frown on your countenance as opposed to a smile, then people will respond according to how they see you- frowning.

One of the soldiers that had been part of this incident, possibly even the ring leader, had already been discharged for a "personality disorder" and has now been arraigned in a federal (civilian) court:
"Quoting other soldiers, the FBI affidavit states that Green and other soldiers planned to rape a woman who lived near the checkpoint.
It alleges that Green shot the woman's relatives, including a girl of about 5, and then raped the woman before shooting her to death."

As I, and others, have mentioned before, in any group of humans there will be a few bad eggs who will commit horrible crimes. No Army ever created in the history of the world has been immune to such things, nor will it ever be.
What is important is how the parent organization concerned deals with such incidents when (not if) they occur. Are the perpetrators actions ignored, or even encouraged and applauded, or are they investigated and punished when they are found out?
There are those who will point to such incidents and claim we're worse than Saddam or Al Quaeda or any of the insurgent groups we're fighting, but unlike them, we punish such the perpetrators of such actions, whereas they reward them with everything from money and promotions to promises of a privileged place in Heaven.
THAT is the essential difference between us and our enemies and a point even our harshest internet critics ought to remember.

Just one small addition to your excellent post, August.
Not only is it important how the parent organization concerned deals with such incidents but also how the society the parent organization belongs to views such incidents.
Is there anyone here who doesn't view this case with disgust and disdain, assuming the facts are correct? As far as I'm concerned, anyone directly involved in incidents of intentional killing, raping and plunder of innocents should be executed by firing squad.

I would first try to find out what drove them to this, do the psychology thing first. I mean rape and pillaging has been going on in every war since day one. The only time soldiers can do an act like this and feel okay about it is in war, would they had done the same thing during peace time? Very unlikely. So what drove them to murder innocents? First whos to blardy well blame, who sent them there telling them to kill in the first place.
No dont kill them. long term prision yes but no need to bring out the knives.

You raise some interesting questions.
I would first try to find out what drove them to this, do the psychology thing first. I mean rape and pillaging has been going on in every war since day one. The only time soldiers can do an act like this and feel okay about it is in war
Let's deal in the tangible and not the abstract, that is if we're going to discuss "war" in the context of this article, then let's do it in the context of this war which is a concrete event and not an abstraction; in this vein, what is it about this war that you feel would make the premeditated rape and murder of a young woman, and the murder of her family, an okay thing to do? Personally I see nothing about this war that would make such an act "okay".
would they had done the same thing during peace time? Very unlikely.
Why is this unlikely? Please elaborate on what specific circumstances of this conflict make it "very unlikely" that they could commit the same crimes in peacetime that they're accused of commiting over there.
So what drove them to murder innocents? First whos to blardy well blame, who sent them there telling them to kill in the first place.
Perhaps there may be some responsibility to go around for at least some of the various war crimes that have been making the news, but I don't know about in this particular case. Because of the nature of this specific crime I'm more inclined to put the blame, and the responsibility, exclusively on the shoulders of the perpetrators.
No dont kill them. long term prision yes but no need to bring out the knives.
Personally I don't support capital punishment, but by the laws of their own country they are eligible for the death sentence and based upon what I have read so far, and if the accusations are true, I won't shed any tears if they are convicted and executed for their crimes.
The only time soldiers can do an act like this and feel okay about it is in war, would they had done the same thing during peace time? Very unlikely. So what drove them to murder innocents? First whos to blardy well blame, who sent them there telling them to kill in the first place..
I disagree, it's just as likely. Armies do tend to have lower crime rates than comparably sized civilian populations, mainly due to the increased supervision they undergo, but they still contain their fair share of evil minded people. Besides such things have occured in peace time armies as well, even ones stationed back home, just as they occur in civvie street.
Who is to blame? THEY are! The perpetrators of the crime, end of story man. How do you drive a person to commit such an act? Do you think someone could drive you do rape and murder a family in cold blood like that? I for one don't think I could draw down on a 5 year old even if someone held a gun to my head and threatened to blow my brains out if i didn't.

We should try to find out what makes certain soldiers do these nasty crimes, shooting them aint going to solve the problem. Like i said do the psychology thing and treat them, find the signs then maybe change the training - make training very stressful (probably already is) and see how they react to it, surely they would show signs.
Hope that was okay :hmm:

That's the problem with your idea though Kiwi. You think it's somehow related to military training and/or a war environment but these type of crimes are also committed by members of the civilan population during peacetime who aren't exposed to such things.

Yeah true your made a good point, but soldiers are not suppose to lose there cool in war like this. They are trained to handle all types of dangerous situations. My theory is they lost it after probably seeing to much killings, buddies blown to bits some just couldn't handle it anymore and went on a rampage of total revenge killing everything in there way - raping and pillaging the enemy, no mercy. When a person flips what he does is right in his mind.

You don't need to be an academic to bring up interesting questions (or interesting answers) :D. You make a good point on the training issue, but I mostly agree with the answer August gave.
Where I disagree with him somewhat, and lean more toward what you said above, is a sentiment I've heard here and there since the Abu Ghraib scandal: U.S. troops are trained to kill (sorry to generalize by lumping all the military branches and occupations together), and are perhaps one of the most effective killing machines in the world (to give credit where credit is do) but are maybe not so effective at keeping the peace (and if this is true I don't place the blame for it on the grunt in the field).
Baghdad fell remarkably fast, but to me it appears that Iraq has slowly disintegrated ever since. What began with looting and lawlessness (which Rumsfeld dismissed with the remark "freedom is messy) slowly escalated into an armed uprising (which Rumsfeld dismissed as the acts of a "few dead-enders") and then a full blown insurgency. Could it have been prevented, or at least contained? I don't know and we'll never know, but as Rumsfeld famously said: "you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might wish you had" and maybe liberating Iraq of its government wasn't such a good idea when the Army that has to replace so many of its functions (in having to provide for the safety and security of the people) hasn't had that much training and experience in the art of keeping the peace.
I'm not saying, by the way, that any amount of training would have prevented the types of people who are alleged to commit the acts they're accused of from commiting them, just that it might have weeded them out beforehand. However now that the acts have been commited, the only thing to do is, if applicable, punish the perpetrators.
By the way, I think the importance of tackling questions like this and punishing the perpetrator isn't so much to deal with any individual incident as it is to reduce the tit-for-tat that these kinds of incidents can lead to.

A more personal perspective on these crimes:
"BAGHDAD — He was the first to enter the charred farmhouse where the bodies of his relatives lay strewn about the floor, shot and bludgeoned to death.
And he watched more than three months later as a U.S. Army officer took the two surviving children in his arms, barely able to hold back tears as he told them that the people who had killed their family would be punished.
"Never in my mind could I have imagined such a gruesome sight," Abu Firas Janabi said of the day in March when his cousin, Fakhriya Taha Muhsen; her husband, Kasim Hamza Rasheed; and their two daughters were slain and their farmhouse set ablaze."Kasim's corpse was in the corner of the room, and his head was smashed into pieces," he said. The 5-year-old daughter, Hadel, was beside her father, and Janabi said he could see that Fakhriya's arms had been broken.
In another room, he found 15-year-old Abeer, naked and burned, with her head smashed in "by a concrete block or a piece of iron."
"There were burns from the bottom of her stomach to the end of her body, except for her feet," he said.
"I did not believe what I was seeing. I tried to fool myself into believing I was in a dream. But the problem was that we were not dreaming. We put a piece of cloth over her body. Then I left the house together with my wife.""

Well relax, that statement "trained to kill" means trained in the operation of weapons and military equipment, not some kind of psychological regimen that turns innocent farm boys into killers.
Don't let anyone kid you. Our effectiveness is due mainly to our advantages in technology and our training methods to use that technology. Against an opponent that is an even match to that, it'd come down to which side wanted to win the most, and of course, "General Chaos" ie which side had the best luck.

I'm also leaning that death would be an escape of sorts for these people.
The rest of there lives in an 8'x10' cell 23 hours a day gives them plenty of time for reflection on what put them there.
Scum is scum. They used the war as an opportunity to commit and cover up this crime.
Would I sentence these guys to death? Most certainly.

Yeah the rest of their lives spent in a steel cage in Leavensworth is not something they're likely to prefer over a quick and semi painless death. I wonder if they still have hard labor?

Why is this unlikely? Please elaborate on what specific circumstances of this conflict make it "very unlikely" that they could commit the same crimes in peacetime that they're accused of commiting over there.
Because the criminals feel there is nobody to police them. They have the ultimate power. The power to give death and get away with it.
Combat and weapons change people for the worst or better. They can do in the combat zone what they wouldn't even think about at home.
How many times have you been around an a$$hole and wished you could put a bullet in his head, cut his throat or beat the crap out of him? I do often but I don't act on those thoughts because I don't want to go to jail.
Well guess what? In a combat zone you can act on those thoughts and can get away with it. You have a rifle in your hand and opportunity. All you got to say if questioned is "He was coming at me with a knife" or "He was running at me and wouldn't stop when I called on him to halt" or "I thought my life was in danger".
Pretty simple huh! Why would you question it? You are in a combat zone and that guys a deacon in his church back home. You have more on your mind running your fire team/platoon than having to worry about some rag-head.
Here is an example. Not to pick on the Brits. Remember a year or two ago when those British security guys were in the habit of going down the road then letting loose on cars that were just going about their business?
Do you even think they would do that back in the U.K.? Not on your life. They did it because they figured they could get away with it.
Look at it like this. You have to figure that 80% or more of people on this earth are s#!theads. Figure half of that at the minimum would commit a crime if they knew they could get away with it. You have to figure that a fraction of that 40% would join the military. Now give them a gun and stick them in Iraq or some other combat zone. What do you think is going to happen? Thats why armies have Military Police, CID, Uniformed Code of Military Justice and the Fort Leavenworth federal penitentiary.
Now you also have my view on the human race.:D

Some pretty good points there Brad and I can't say I disagree with you. The US Military has a pretty good track record when we think of how long this war's been going on, the relatively small number of incidents, and the brutal nature of the insurgency these guys (most of them you young guys in their late teens or early twenties) are up against, and so its unfortunate that its this stuff that grabs the headlines.
