Don’t kid yourselves you can make Rooney a scapegoat ……. :nope:

Even when he was on the pitch England didn’t look as if they’d score

And if you can score only one penalty in four why should you expect to make progress in a tight tournament where penalty shootouts are the norm

No, but I got into your tank before the match... So far I am winning the quarterfinal -poll. I voted Germany, Italy and Portugal, and they all are through. I voted France, and I bet a 55:45 chance for that Brazil cannot pass beyond them. Bad way for England to loose the game, I did not see it all, but listened to it on BFBS or BBC radio. The reported made it sound like a dramatic match. And England should really avoid penalty shootouts, or haven't they learned by now that that is not made for them?

they didn't play well because they did not consider it important enough to play well--they went to sleep--as usual
they played like football was their hobby not their profession..

Yeah, I mean making Rooney a scapegoat for the entire match is perhaps a little bit too steep, but he certainly didn't help matters by losing his cool like that, yes I know it was a stressful situation and very frustrating but he gets paid enough not to loose his temper and stomping on that guys groin was uncalled for, especially when you consider that they were already a man down after Beckham fell.
But kudos to the England side, they played well considering they only had ten men, however, in the end, it all came down to penalties which, sadly, we totally suck at. :damn:

God...I don't know....the whole England squad must be stupid. Ronaldo said to his team mates to incite Rooney into doing something stupid. He knows him well and knows Rooney is a hot-head. Though someone should've told him..."look, Rooney mate, they are out to get you". The Argentines did the same to Beckham. *yawn*. My God, these guys are thick or what...

Second stupid England team mistake: Burn your young players out...Michael Owen...compared to Maradona at the age of 18, warming the Real Madrid bench at 26. Beckham: Should be at the peak of his career...instead he's the ghost of his former self. Rooney: Will have the same fate as Beckham/Owen....and shows his inexperience by being easily taunted. Who's next? Oh yeah...Walcot...

Have England ever heard of the Under 21?

....carry on though. You know...40 years since they won a World Cup (and that was a fluke) at home....so yeah...they must be doing everything right.

Wow, no ones said anything about Sven yet. You ask me I recon his 4-5-1 formation did not help much. So many times the ball was booted up to Rooney when he was isolated and possession was given away, this happened the last game as well. With two strikers things would have been more open up there and something might have happened. Look at when Rooney was sent off, England picked up there game and there passing got a little better. If only they played like that from the start with two strikers there would have been a lot more pressure on the Portugal goalie. As it stands he could have sat down and had a cup of tea and England still would not have hit the back of the net. All I can say is thank god this is that last game Sven is in charge. Lets hope things pick up for them.

On Rooney, I think he got quite frustrated out there. Stepping on that lads balls was accidental. I think he got a bit pissed when the Portugal players ran up to the referee pressuring him to give Rooney a card, that’s something English players don’t do. Still it was Rooney’s fault for letting them get to him, but he’s still quite young so give him a brake. Next world cup he’ll be scoring some goals and every body will love him. Anyway, hard luck England. As A Welsh man I was rooting for you to do well this year. I find it sad that despite having a team with some very good players in it they just never look comfortable this time round.

Ramius

Im not sure if the ref has actually come out and said this yet, but i dont think he got sent off for stamping.
If you watch the replay, the ref is pointing everyone away after it happened - no sign of a red card getting pulled out. Then as soon as Rooney pulls back Ronaldos shirt = instant red.

First day back at Man Utds training ground might turn out a bit nasty :hmm::hmm::hmm:

And as for that dumb swede :damn::damn::damn::damn:
Whats the point of taking 4 strikers, but only having cinfidence in 2 of them, and 1 of them gets broken. So you now left to play a stupid 4-5-1 with a striker who has just came back from injury and a system that none of the squad seem to like playing.

XabbaRus
07-02-06, 05:16 AM
Yea I didn't think the stamping on the bollocks was deliberate. I agree with Ramius here.

Looking at the replay the way the guy had his legs round Rooney's as he was trying to get the ball kind of made it a distinct possibility.

Did anyone notice after that red card that every time there was even the slightest contact between a Portugal and England player the Portugal player would either go down or put his hand up calling for the ref.

I think England played better with 10 men than 11 and better than any game before this. Granted Rooney is an idiot and England need to sort themselves out. Hopefully the new boss will pull things up. Sven GoneErikson at last.

Hmmm ... this stamping incident is going to take some unravelling :hmm:

My first rection to watching the the replays several times over, is the same as Ramius and Xabbarus It looked like an untidy and overeffusive scrap for the ball, and Rooney's boot just found itself in the players groin.

Having said that, I watched it yet again this morning, and for the first time I felt I could detect a hint of intention from Rooney. I think what we may have here is half conscious intent. It looks like it may have been a petulant reflex with the boot that unfortunately happened to be in the sort of place normally associated with somebody who knew eactly what he was doing.

As to Sven ..... Well, I think he's going to fill many pages of analysis and controversy for years to come yet.

To me Rooneys stamping looks intentional. He looks down and the ball is rolling away from Carvalho. His body weight is on his right foot, but he thrusts his left foot in Carvalho`s groin completely unnecessary. The Norwegian commentators thought the same and Norway is the the most anglophile nation on earth when it comes to football. Rooney is a good player, but he is also a thug.

Well if that's the case, Rooney will be beating up his girlfriend or wife, getting drunk and eating a lot of fast food. May even take drugs, go on the waggon and fall off the waggon a few times and when he's all washed up write his autobiography, and make a cool million from the book sales. ;)

Let's hope that Rooney does not become a second George Best or Paul Gascoigne at the end of his career:-?

Even with Lennon on the field and Mick Jagger in the audience, England could not get rid of the penalty hex. I almost suffered a heart attack over the week-end with those 2 penalty shootouts. So the story continues: world cup 1998 Agentina-England, Beckham sent off, extra-time, penalty shootout lost by England,
world cup 2006 Portugal-England, Rooney sent off, extra-time, penalty shootout lost by England.
I will never again make jokes on penalty shootouts.

Anybody noticed the other England-supporting celebrity that was shown on tv in several close-ups?
Probably not, but that was Campino, singer of the German punk/rock band "Die Toten Hosen"= "The Dead Pants", German slang expression for "nothing going on here", "it is all dead pants here".
His mom is English, that is why he supports the 3 Lions and his dad was a chief judge at the administrative court in Düsseldorf. It makes sense, that it was his fate to become a Punkrocker.:D

We can't even claim we're getting better at it
German slang expression for "nothing going on here", "it is all dead pants here".
The perfect epitaph for England's campaign

Hey, I think the England team are good at one thing. They do the best resignation speeches. That statement by Beckam hit the mark. :D

Just because he's the highest paid footballer in the world, got a sexy pop star wife, can command the front page of every magazine just by having breakfast, doesn't mean he doesn't believe in old fashioned "dull" values like duty, working hard and wanting to do well for his team.
