Hello all,
Noobie here! I purchased SH3 just a couple days ago after getting an email, and I used to play a sub sim back in the DOS days but I don't recall the name...
Anyway this game looked like a welcome change of pace from all the other popular titles out there so I gave it a go... After 2 days of battling with StarForce, I finally managed to get the game working!!!
Per the usual, I did all the training missions a couple times, watched the Ubi videos that came with etc. but found that I was rarely if ever intercepting (much less sinking) any ships. My first two patrols in Career mode were dreadful, no ships sunk, except my own once! Not a great sucess rate.
Then I happend upon this website from a google search, and started reading the threads here.... A HUGE THANK YOU to Dantenoc and all the others for thier most excellent sticky posts!!!!
On my very next patrol I was able to sink my first kill!!! (BTW they should really have at least 1 of the training missions in that smaller first sub you get that only has 3 tubes, that boat thru me for a loop when I went from training to career!).
After that I had just enough reknown to upgrade into a larger boat, Woo Hoo, deck gun and more tubes!!!
I'm still on my next patrol, 4th total playing and here's how that's going....
Assigned to patrol grid AM18, pretty far away for a noob that hasn't gone more that a couple thousand Km's in the game before now....
On my way out, I got a contact report, and used the sticky post guide to intercept and sink my first C3 Cargo! I steamed on over heading for the Atlantic and came across a Merchant, sunk him too...
Then I round the land mass and I'm in the North Atlantic!!!
So I steam for my assigned grid when I get a contact report of a Large convoy moving south south east at 6 knots. Again I used the sticky post and plotted me an intercept. On the way there I run across another C3 Cargo all alone... Well I didn't want to pass up the convoy, and this C3 just happend to be on the same course as I was!!!! Well I was running flank on the surface to beat the convoy, so I fired off a couple of torps from the surface, I guess she never saw me coming, cause both hit and down she went....
So then I got to my intercept point... nothing, huh, did I screw up? Dived a little to get on the hydrophones, "Warship!" hey here we go, a warship off in the direction the convoy should be, Guess it's an escort, so I decided to sit and wait at depth, lined up 90 degrees from the way the convoy should be... A few game hours later, I can finally see the Flower Corvette clearly in my periscope... He's set to pass in front of me at about 3000 meters... Good I think, I'll just let the escorts pass and wait for the good stuff. A little while later I can see the whole convoy in the scope. T2 Tanker, C2 Cargo and various smaller ships, the only escorts I can make out were the flower that passed me up and another trailing behind.
Noobie luck I guess, but it just so happened that the ships were in a two by two and I was smack in the middle, when they passed me, I was right between both rows!!!!!!!!
Well the T2 an C2 are the biggest ships I see, and one right behind the other, so I decided to wait for the T2 and smack her first, at the same time ,I decided that I was going to also try to fire my aft tube at whatever contact happened to be back there.
Short time later, and Fire 1, ... , Fire 2 ! Then I swivel the scope 180, Fire 5 !
Immediatly I order a 90 turn to the right to bring my fore tubes to bear on the C2 who's now passed... A short time later, BLAM, BLAM two hits on the T2. Shortly there after she's down. My aft tube shot missed (not surprised there)...
After some manuver's I finally got into a firing spot for the C2 and Wham! 1 out of two torps explode (I guess the other was a dud, cause I watched it in the mini cam view and it just bounced off the hull). Regardless I must have done something right, cause the C2 sunk pretty quickly.
Well I decided not to press my luck, after all I haven't even made it to my assigned patrol grid yet, so I dove to 50 meters and slipped out of the area.
Saved game, plan to complete my patrol tonight...
Without you guys, this would not have been possible, I would still be chasing down ships, wondering why my contacts disappear and never sinking anything but my own boat!!
I also plan to install some of the mods I've been reading about, this game rocks once you get someone to teach you how to play it!
