Yeah, I got that .

I hit a convoy a day or two ago (real time) , fired one fish, sunk a largo cargo, and took inventory on the rest of the convoy's members. I noticed a warship on the left side of the convoy. Since it was in the middle of the convoy, and looked large, I figured it was something more than a DE. Nice tasty treat, but I couldn't get positioned to get a good shot off at it, so I let it be. Had a bear of a time escaping the two DEs, but I managed it. Once I got away, I saved it, and went to bed.

So I fire up the saved game tonight, and start heading towards the convoy. Can't find it, so I start up a search pattern. A quick dive revealed it had turned north immediately after I attacked, and continued north (previously NE). I moved ahead of it, submerged to periscope depth, rigged for silent running (2 knots, too), and waited patiently. The DEs had positioned themselves forward and rear of the convoy, one each. The forward DE made me very nervous... he was doing his typical zig zag search pattern, and ended up moving almost directly over my position. I was tracking him over the hydrophones, realized how close he was getting, so I dove to 20m and watched him via the external camera (can't resist knowing). He passed nearly over me, but luckily didn't detect me.

After getting inside the DE protection, I rose to periscope depth and turned west (the convoy was heading north) to get some distance on where I figured the warship would be. A quick pop on the 'scope identified the warship (Fiji light cruiser), and I placed him. That gave me a chance to get positioned as the convoy continued to move towards my location. A couple quick range/bearing fixes afterwards, I had him nailed to a T.

Had a near miss again with one of the large cargoes. Once again, I saw him in my scope. He was on the right course to nail me, so I went to a full three knots (hoping the convoy would mask my sound) and changed course. Again, I watched via the external camera as my bow came a few meters away from ramming his stern. This put me in perfect firing position for the cruiser, though.

A few seconds later, three torpedoes were sent his way (2 degree spread, 2.5m depth, impact). All three hit, one right after another. While those three were enroute, I took a couple snap shots at random ships with the last bow torp and the stern torp, but both missed. While my boat was escaping, I watched the cruiser capsize a few minutes later via the external camera.

I escaped by going to full ahead just after the torp's hit, and heading out the back of the convoy at 155m or so. DEs never located me afterwards.

My point? After losing the last couple captains to dumb luck or just plain stupidity, it feels so darn good to execute an attack and have everything just work. Bagging a 10,000 ton warship ain't bad either :D. I'm looking forward to making another run tomorrow night with the rest of the torp's tomorrow night, and seeing if I can't send a few cargoes down too.

Nice! I love taking a cruiser out in a convoy. Once I saw revenge in a convoy moving down the channel, and she was travelling at 5kts but I was out of torps!

I like the back-door escape you used. That works for me often. I find it's good to leave on an oblique angle if there's a rear escort. Sometimes i'll even take out the front and/or rear escorts to make my egress more smooth.
