Does anyone know if it's possible to have more than one installation of SH3 on the same computer? I'm in the process of setting up my new machine and would dearly love to have SH3 c/w The Grey Wolves and the stock SH3 c/w a few mods of my own choice. I don't want to install twice (one in the default Program Files dir & one in my "Games" dir) without knowing if Windows can cope with the same software installed twice! It might sound like a stupid question but what I don't know, I ask about! LOL

- Install once, and fully patch.
- Copy and paste the newly installed SilentHunterIII folder.
- Rename the new "Copy of SilentHunterIII" to whatever takes your fancy (like "SilentHunterIII - GW11a").
- Create shortcuts on your desktop, or use SH3Cmdr's /l switch, to point to each created copy of SH3.
- Play away!

Please note though that ALL installations will point to the same save games...thus you really need to make sure that you remember what careers you are playing with what versions of SH3.

:-? Isnt the Windows Registry not something to be aware of...mostly when I try to reinstall an Busted game and the Uninstall didnt work good...and I reinstall..suddently a messages appear that the game already has been installed and you do not need to Reinstall it and you only can ''Exit setup''

Everyone seems to have this stressy thing about the Registry with SH3. It makes me laugh. All the Registry stores in relation to SH3 is the install path and the usual InstallShield entries.

No, the Registry entries are not something to be concerned about. By following my steps you will always have a copy of SH3 at the original installed location which is all that matters in relation to uninstalling. Remember, you are only installing SH3 once - you are then simply *copying* it as many more times as you like. SH3 itself DOES NOT USE THE REGISTRY!

You can copy SH3 a squillion times, renaming as much as you like and:
a) each copy will run without any problems;
b) you can still uninstall the original installation via the Add/Remove panel.

In fact, to be totally pedantic, as soon as you install the v1.4b patch you are breaking the integrity of the uninstallation routine, as it still refers to SH3 v1.0, thus all NEW files are not removed anyway.

It depends on the mod. If it's a major one like GW or NYGM then they won't run together unless you have two installs. If it's a collection of minor mods then you may need only one. The best thing to do is install a mod using JSGME, which you can find on the subsim downloads page. This will alert you if a mod you are installing is trying to change a file that another mod has already altered. It will also enable you to remove any mod if it's causing problems.

im not too bothered about visual mods just mods like different types of ships i can sink im fed up with the usual merch, cargo and tanker, and i only ever see the usual DD`s i.e class c dd or tribal dd, so anything you can recommend that would also run with the harbour traffic mod plz

Look through the SH3 Mods Workshop thread, there's new ships posted there now and then. AG124 has made some cool new ships that I use http://dashboard.filefront.com/AG124/.

Easy to install, just follow the instructions.

...... and my thanks too. Must admit, I hadn't thought that question through before posting it - though it in my defence, I had been up all night setting-up the new computer, lol. I wonder what SH3 is like with a machine that actually meets the Ubisoft requirements, my old machine was way below but still ran the game. Don't tell me - I want it to come as a surprise! Ha ha ha ha

Hi All,
Iv'e read lots about needing multiple installs to run different mods, why bother? It clutters the hard drive and can get confusing.
Using the excellent JSGME and SH3 Commander I installed GW, NYGM, RUB 1.45 and U-Boat war Aces into the Mods folder and can now use whatever I choose, simply roll back, remove one set of mods and install the new ones. All my games are saved and can be picked up again with the appropriate mods. It doesn't take more than a few minutes and is well worth it. I get to compare the games and don't get bored with the same one all the time.
RR.

Hi JS

I am a little confused on how to set up CMDR 2.5 and how to write out the "switch". Do I need more than 1 CMDR for two games?

Sorry to be a bug. But I want one to go to Ubisoft-55 and the other to go to Ubisoft-GT

You technically don't need two copies of SH3 Commander to support two installs of SH3. However, you probably want two copies! That way it will prevent cross contamination of settings from one mod to the other.

You'll install SH3 Commander Twice. Once to say "C:\program files\SH3 Commander" and once to "C:\program files\SH3 Commander-GT"

On your desktop you'll create two Shortcuts (rclick -> New -> Shortcut).

First Shortcut:
Type the location of the item: "C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\55"

Type a name for this shortcut = SH3 55

Second Shortcut:
Type the location of the item: "C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-GT\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\GT"

Type a name for this shortcut = SH3 GT

Make sure those file paths match where you installed the games to. I'm not entirely sure I understood your folder naming, but that should be enough to show you where to set things for both installs to work.

Also think about using MultiSH3 to seperate your career files as well. :)

Hi Kyland. Thanks for responding. However, I am having some problems. My SH Commander is called SH Commander-U55 (in Program files on drive D)

SH3 is in the program files on drive D and is called Ubisoft-U55

when trying to make this link

"D:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-U55\SH3Cmdr.exe"/:l:"D:\Program Files\Ubisoft-U55"

I receive a message that the link is not named properly.

Drive C is partitioned. Partition 1 is strictly for Windows files only and drive D, (the rest of that hard drive) has all the programs.

Try "D:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-U55\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"D:\Program Files\Ubisoft-U55"

The latter path needs to be the full path to the sh3.exe file.

I don't like the idea of having more then one install it just means something else will break down. But it would seem that a few of us have got this set to work so I maybe wrong.

If both your installs are named different to the usaul SilentHunterIII then Commander will ask you for the folder - point it to the offline one and it will have nothing to do with the other
IIRC

I have had up to 6 install on my comp at any one time for various reasons and mods
The only trick is remembering which career goes with which install
The easiest way i found was to add the install initails after the career name

eg Herbert Wagner GW or Wilhelm Schultz NYGM

That way I never get mixed up

Hi JS, It seems I downloaded version 1.1 instead of 1.1a. Where can I download version 1.1a?

Thanks Robert

MultiSH3 solves that problem. See http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=98608

ftp://gibbage.mine.nu/Silent%20Hunter%20III/Grey%20Wolves/. Some people say the server is somewhat slow but with a download manager like GetRight you can just download it in the background and let it take as long as necessary.

What about using Wolfies Tweek Pak. How would I handle that for multiple installs?

I don't use it so I can't comment from experience, but thus far the only mod/tool I've come across thus far that needed updating to be compatible with MultiSH3 was SH3 Commander and Jaesen sorted that out with the 2.6.1 update.

You've always been able to have multiple copies of SH3 in order to have different mod combinations but until MultiSH3 you haven't been able to keep the careers separate. That's the only difference.

I keep the files separate by backing them up and the SH3 under PF\ubisoft are simply named SH3-GW etc, and when I want to to use that particular, I simply use the "l" switch in CMDR.

I keep my game files by simply moving them or renaming them to SH so that I use the correct file.
