Hello all, I have been searching the web and the manaul for the following info. I even went to Uboat.net. What the heck is the advantage of the VIIC over the VIIB other then 3 sec of dive time. The VIIB is faster, smaller in size = less chance of being detected has the same armement. So why would any one choose the VIIC?
Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks
That 3 seconds is very important to staying alive. ;)

If they would fall close to the bow a slower uboat might have been better ;)

Scroll down to the Type VIIC and it says that the VIIB suffered from a lack of internal space for fitting new technology. So they built the larger VIIC.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I am currently in a IIA it is March '40 and I am trying to see where to go from there VIIB or VIIC. I shall give it more consideration.
Thanks again

Smaller boat, less time to Dive and more maneurability. and those few secons can save your sub .
I have a IXB that has a little more time to dive and a lot of torpedoes load (22) I like larger boats since sh1 and i found it a good balance (size-load-dive time) in the late 1941.
I donīt want the IXC because is a bit too larger and takes more time to dive.
Perhaps in the late war with a lot of aircrafts could be better a smaller boat or stay deck awash at 7 meters and save time to dive.

Personally i like smaller boats, and the one a appreciate very much and do not want to change for a VIIC..is my U-100 type VIIB. It's fast and agile underwater, and i like the aggesive look of the bows of the VIIB.

It's not really a disadvantage. I use a sensor mod (SensorPak mod or something like that?!?) and I get more than adequate warning when aircraft are using radar. I was hunting a ship and 3 times I had to crash dive for aircraft in my Type IXC. However I didn't go into the depths straight away, since I was determined to get that damned ship! I got my radar warnings then stayed on the surface at flank speed and only crash dived when they were getting too close for comfort. Not close enough for them to be in visual range but just before they were.
You'd be amazed at how fast a Type IXC can go down when you're already at flank speed, and that's without running with decks awash.
