View Full Version : Sound inversion

Hey all... bit of a newb for sub sims but not to sims in general (air combat, racing, etc).
So far, I'm thoroughly enjoying SH3 but I've hit one big issue... my sounds are inverted, sort of.
For example, say I'm in external cam mode, underwater, and am directly facing a vessel. I can't hear it. However, if I rotate 180 deg, I can now hear it perfectly. It makes tracking things by sound extremely difficult, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I've searched the various fora but have come up empty-handed.

And now for potentially stupid question #2... despite having at least 2 submariners in my extended family, I know very little about submarine operational practices and procedures and, earlier this evening as I was on patrol near Scapa Flow, it occurred to me to wonder: did crews go fishing, to supplement their food rations? I mean, some of the spots they toured had/have some awesome fishing and I know that I for one would take fresh meat over stale wurst any day.

Anyhow, thanks in advance.

You know, that's interesting, because until you mentioned it I never really thought about it. But now that you mention it, when I'm on the bridge facing forward I hear the diesels very loud and clear. When I turn 90º port or starboard, the sound becomes occluded. When I face the rear, again I hear it loud and clear.

I am using NYGM TW 2.01.

It does seem a little odd. I've also noticed that the voices of my men seem to be occluded more now at times so that sometimes they are very clearly heard, and others it's hard to make out what they're saying.

Definitely no (official) fishing from a U-boat.

Standing orders from BdU:
U-boats were to maintain a proper watch at all times and this was not to be distracted.

I can think of one U-boat that was lost after ignoring these orders, to fish out floating boxes (from a long-sunken ship) that contained a strange kind of wool inside.
The watch-crew observed this instead of the seas and skies. Then they were unexpectedly attacked by unnoticed carrier-aircraft firing guns. The 'wool' burst into flames all over the boat - it was gun-cotton. While the crew dealt with the fires, other aircraft bombed the U-boat into a state where it had to be abandoned.

Doubtless there were other occurrences of such unauthorised distractions resulting in the loss of the boat. U-boat refuelling operations at sea were exceptionally perilous, for the same reason.

re: fishing.

Yes they did and still do.

edit: not necessarily by line and hook...and...not everyone topside was on watch.

I've read of shark, turtle and flying fish being part of the menu. I haven't read of them using hook and line, just using guns. As for only the watch crew topside, I just read of a U-Boat crash diving then realising they were missing a man. He'd been using a temporary wooden toilet they'd put on deck. They surfaced and recovered the man (also shooting at a shark that was circling near him). I suppose a toilet is a good place to be when you hear your boat dive beneath you.

The sound of the diesels vanishing when you look left or right on the bridge is something that happens in an unmodded game as well, so it's a stock issue and one I've never seen a fix for.

Thanks for the info, guys... pretty interesting.

Khayman... so, is there a specific mod that seems to correct this issue? At the moment, I'm probably defying several BdU standing orders and driving around backwards when I want to hear something.

I don't know of any mod that corrects the issue, sorry.

Ah well... thanks for the info.
I think I'll just continue driving around backwards, just to tick Dönitz off.
