Does anyone remember playing avalon hill's Submarine. It was an old pre computer board game? lots of tables and charts. My first intro into the fun of sneaking up on ships and firing a torpedo. I'm probably dating myself....

Its not a computer game - i'd try a google search of avalon hill games and try it from there. I think I still have it. The only board wargame I have left.

I still remember it. Back when cardboard ruled the seas. Don't know if I'd have the patience for all the manual plotting of moves and consulting of paper charts now days.

Here's a pic of the mapboard and ship counters...

I picked that game up about a year ago from a local hobby shop: discount bin, $4. I've looked at it, but haven't played it.

That board game doesn't look too appealing to be honest.

When I was at school they used to do this after school club with PC's and they also had a war-board game. But that thing was MASSIVE. It took up three tables, had hundreds of cards and units. What the hell would we understand at that age...anyway, I've tried finding something of the sort ever since, without luck. That really looked fun....

SPI games often had huge paper maps that you had to mount.Back in the 80s I played War in the Pacific with a bunch of guys on Monday nights. The map was mounted on top a pinpong table. It was huge. It had thousands of counters. Here is a link with the game stats. http://www.wargameacademy.org/WIP/

I've played World in Flames a couple of times over the years; a really big strategy game that made Axis and Allies look like a kiddie game.

Sorry the link doesn't contain too much information, but take a look at the new one lower right.

I'll probably stick with SHIII myself.

I had the game, back in '79 when I was in the NAVY. I think I may still have it buried somewhere in some boxes.

Jutland was a pretty good wwi era game - no board - took up a lot of space. It tried to give a feel for searching for the enemy.

I don't suppose any of the youngsters remember board games.....I played that game to death in the late 70s and early 80s along with a number of other AH titles: Luftwaffe, Panzerblitz, Caesars legions just to name a few..
Had to use your imagination then......:smug:

This thing "imagination" you speak of...what is it? It seems it is something lost in time...partaking of a once glorious age. :88)

got replaced by graphics cards realism debates and "bean counters"--these days they usually haven't got enough imagination to realise that they haven't got enough imagination to realise they haven't got enough imagination- repeat

Though not directly related to avalon hill check out this site for online board games.

Alot of title to choose from and all based on REAL past board games.

Who needed imagination when you had the graphical splendour of the ZX81, the amazing cornucopia of the Spectrum 48k or the incomparable virtual reality of the Commodore 64? I've still got everything from my speccy up, alas the ZX81 is gone. And btw I aint old, I'm 35 years young. :D

And there's more where that came from ... other utilities for playing classic board games on line include Cyberboard (http://cyberboard.brainiac.com/) and Aide de Camp (http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/products/adc2/ADC2-Main.html). Enterprising grognards have created modules for various games, including a Cyberboard version of Submarine: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3083, in the 'Files' section.
