With all these modern ships, are there still pirates in the sea?
I was planning to write own tale about a man living in an old Type II U-boat.
Coudl a man survive and operate the whole sub?

There are still pirates about, though these days they've ditched their wooden galleons for speedboats and pieces of eight for pieces of coke....and I don't mean the drink.
Usually around the South American and Caribbean, old pirate stomping grounds

As for one guy and a uboat, very unlikely IMHO, you've got to take into account the trim tanks, dive planes, ballast tanks, engine speed, all of this has got to be monitored pretty much all the time, he wouldn't have time to sink any ships or claim any booty....but...say a team of...I dunno...five or six people maybe, minimum...they might be able to pull it off. :D

I have not heard of pirates around the Carribean and have been there without seeing one pirate! Yes there are pirates, but try off the Asian coasts and African coasts. Somalia has a ton of them. Not far from Hong Kong is a number of reports too.

Here is the official report on where they are found (Notice - closest to Carribean is the Peru one):

Piracy prone areas and warnings
S E Asia and the Indian Sub Continent
Bangladesh : Chittagong anchorage.
Indonesia : Galasa Straits, Jakarta (Tg.Priok)
Malacca straits
Singapore Straits Africa and Red Sea
Gulf of Aden / Southern Red Sea
Somalian waters - Eastern and northeastern coasts are high-risk areas for hijackings. Ships not making scheduled calls to ports in these areas should keep at least 200 nm away from the coast
West Africa : LagosSouth and Central America and the Caribbean waters
Peru – Callao

Investigate the daily broadcast warnings at http://www.nga.mil/portal/site/maritime/

sometimes you can read things like this:

MALAYSIA: An unidentified tug and barge are reported missing 21 May (reported 8 Jun) while enroute Port Klang from Kuala Beram, Miri, Sarawak with a cargo of scrap metal. The IMB reports suspicion that crew may have hijacked the vessel (IMB).

SOUTH CHINA SEA: Unidentified product tanker was boarded 31 May at 0225 local time while underway in position 01 32N, 104 38E by 2 persons who entered engine room and broke into stores. Duty engineer raised alarm and the two jumped overboard and escaped (IMB).

And of course, over at www.venganza.org (http://www.venganza.org) they've got the proof that the number of pirates is dropping in direct relation to global warming:

Oh arrr, a pirate I be...

Come to think of it, if we clubbed together and got an ex Russian navy vessel, nothing too big mind, but with a decent gun and a few missiles we could be pirates...

As long as there will be no Seaman Staines on deck, and, no Rodger the Cabin boy.

I won't tolerate that on my boat. :rotfl:

So does it mean that a U-boat could withstand nowadays pirates?
It is the sole foundation of my story.

I also would like to see if there are blueprints, pics or specs for that.
IŽd love to make some drawings, and if I am to make a story I need to know where they cook their food, where they eat, etc.

It would be better if it could be a U-boat model which had the proper thing to ram another ship and a deck gun.

If you're asking whether a Uboat could take on a modern day pirate then I should imagine that it would be possible, after all, all the uboat needs to do is submerge, most pirates wouldn't have anything to deal with that, all they could do is drop a few grenades which wouldn't do much except give the sonarman a headache. If the Uboat wanted to retalliate, it could always get out of range of the pirate's machine guns and open fire with the deckgun...although firing on a rapid moving speedboat with an old 1940s cannon would require a lot of skill. Alternatively they could try using the flak gun against the speedboat, I've heard of skippers on SHIII doing that with patrol boats...trouble is, to get within range, you'll also be in the range of their gunfire and you could wind up with a man down.
As for blueprints of Uboats...
Here's a Type II cutaway, although I doubt you could do much pirating with a Type II:
http://www.uboataces.com/uboat-type-ii.shtml#top

Though a Uboat pirate in these days would most likely use a Type IX or Type XXI:

http://www.uboataces.com/uboat-type-ix.shtml

http://www.uboataces.com/uboat-type-xxi.shtml

Though the XXI doesn't have a deckgun...it still has AA guns, AND they're in a better position than the other boats. :arrgh!:

I'd only sail with Capt. Peter Blood.

There have been cases of pirates equipped with rocket launchers and machine guns. Some only have machetes. It depends. Sometime they steal stores and run off, sometime they hold the crew hostage to get the captain's safe, sometime they kill half the crew, get the captain to open the safe, then kill the Captain so the rest of the crew will stay calm... Sometime the ship just disappear, and we can only assume the crew's dead. Pirates are scary.

Lots of pirates nowaday. Pirate activity dropped since the Tsunami, but it's still a very existent problem, for which crews are still trained as needed.

Pirates wouldn't attack a U-Boat. In fact, they'd run away from anything millitary... And I'm guessing a speedboat would be faster than a surfaced typ II.

Unless you go after the kind of pirates that use fishing boats...

But I have to wonder what year your story is taking place in? A twenty year old steel ship, although very well maintained, is going to start having problems - Even if most of the electronics and engines were replaced over time. Military vessels are conceived to drydock at an alarming rate.
