Discused some times in the past, if i dont remember bad, the range at wich the ping sound is reproduced by the computer is set in a diferent file.... you can set at wich range you want to hear... in example, the ships propellers, for cargo and DDs, same with the pinging sound, then yo have the DDs pinging and your AI crew can hear it, but no sound reproduced by the computer.

If i dont remember bad, Timetraveller Utility (Mini Tweaker) can be used to adjust this range. I made it for ship's propellers.

I dont know about before you get the message, but if the destroyer is close enough I certainly hear the pings.

you won't hear it if you are on compressed time. and i believe you should hear it before your crew reports it.

doesn't sound like an M1 to me... i'm no expert though

If you can pull the tirgger fast enough and load the M1 fast enough I guess you could get the repeated ping one usually hears from a destroyer. But the ping does sound similar (key word here) to the ejecting clip of an M1.......I've never been on a sub while being hunted by an allied destroyer pinging me so the M1 was the closest familiar sound I could tie it to.

I think it depends on where you are - if you are in inside the 3d sub, yes you will hear it. At least some of the other screens you will not.

I'm not entirely sure about this but it perhaps depends on which screen you are in as to whether you hear the ping.

I know I have been busy in some other screens not aware of having been pinged and find out only when I enter the F2 screen. The pinging will then become all to obvious and I find the the crew is in crouched anxious mode.

If I remember correctly, I have heard the sound before the message. It was not so intence and definitely the DD had not locked on my sub (yet).

As far as I have experienced, you can hear the pings in every screen exept the external views. And yes, you can hear the pings before the message comes up, because it is only triggered when the enemy actually pinged you (as in your sub gave a return to the ping). When the enemy is just obliviously pinging around, you can hear it, but won't get the message.
So: ping-message = they got you

Yeah, i,m having trouble in 1939, 2 Hunter 1 Destroyers and an V&W destroyer is nailing my ass for Shooting down the Merchant with the deck gun...and an small speedboat saw me and after that my Hydrophone picked up the sound I truly hate when the Depth of the sea is 30-35 meters!!!!! Yep i,m in the english canal by broad daylight and they ping and try to DC me with everything they got....its about 13:00 (ingame) and I have to wait till nightfall to make my Revenge move!

and the Ping sound , I only hear them when the DD is nearing my position: you can hear that: Ping------ping-----ping---ping--ping--ping--ping and the they mostly DC's the hell out of the area you're close by

Just as I was finishing up the requirements of my patrol grid I received a message from BdU of a convoy that was heading my way and as I had 5 torpedoes left, I said, "What the heck, let's give it a go". Once I had sank a T2 Tanker, the 5 warships started active 'pinging' and I heard it this time and I heard the echo back when it bounced off. Wow. I was real lucky getting out of that mess. :) I sunk 3 of the 5 warships and the rest went back to guarding the convoy and didn't bother looking for me. Lucky eh? Yeppers :p Oh, Ya, one was a bow shot at 450 m.

:D bowshot from 450 meters I love those...I had one with +- 380 meters with my aftertube he was chasing me and shooting his board cannons at me....took some damage but hell...it was worth the torpedo hitting him...kinda see the ship lifts up a bit from the water...
