this really bordered me last night, I was on my 3th Patrol 1939 going throught the english channel leaving an trail of Destruction.

I got suddently an Sound contact of an Warship. So I went on Silent running
didnt used my external cam, I used the Hydro.

I heared him commin closer. so I went on PD . and Suddently I see him in the middle of the night. But whats this! 33 Knots? and when he was 50 meters away from me he suddently Stamped his brakes to 11 knots, tearning the Search lights on and dropped DC's as an Crazy man. he inflicted some minor damages on my Batteries and stuff. So he made an circle (search patron i guess) and just when he thought he finished me off I blown up his Engin compartment with 1 Mannually targetted Fish! (jezus i was so proud of myself) the Big bang was Nice to see....but...I think I wasnt the only one who saw that another V&W destroyer came right after me (I killed his younger brother I think) but he had no chance cause I used my After Tube and waited to get in an direct line behind me and shot the Fish right under his Nose.

Kinda funny to see the ship just going from 33 knots instantly to 11 turning his Search lights on and dropped DC's . Kinda pictures an scene like ''I GOT YOU KNOW! MEAN SUBMARINE!'':rotfl:

That's a problem with the game that apparently can't be fixed without the codes. The first time I played the Naval Acadamy Torpedo scenario I fired one at a parked merchant; he avoided it by accelerating to 6 knots almost instantly. It's something we just have to live with for the time being.

There's all kinds of stuff that didn't get modeled well. Like Steve said, we've just got to deal with it.

Absolutely, Yes they have the brakes !

I once was suddenly being pinged while being at PD and this DD made an attack run on me.

As i was trying to gain dept i released a decoy right before he ran over my boat. This caused him to actually hit the brakes and then back up as if being confused :-? and unable to choose between the sound generated by my boat and the decoy

Actually 1 of the most lame moments i have ever experienced in SHIII :rotfl: :rotfl:

Iīd bet lowering the horsepower value by lets say 1/3 or PS->Kw/h
in all units .sim file would lead to good results.
I once tried it with a player controlled submarine and didnīt lost any top speed. Game felt much better after the change...

What are realistic deceleration values? If a destroyer at ahead flank suddenly goes emergency reverse, how long would it take it to reach 1/3 of it's forward speed? In my mind it should be FAST, due to the wicked friction of the ocean. However, my opinion has been generated by the SH3 physics engine...

This seems worth looking into it deeper. I hope all those modders take a look into this. Great find Gammel :up:- another one after firing Hurricane guns...

I somehow doubt that a destroyer running at 33 knots would be able to reverse his propellors instantly, in part because of the geering boxes, and in part due to the fact that it would risk fracturing the shafts and propellors. Not to mention that everyone on board would have to wear some seat belts :))

Perhaps they have a primitive form of the inertial dampeners they use in Star Trek. The ones that enable the ship to go from zero to faster than the speed of light in an instant without the crew being splatters of blood and gore on the walls. Would make a good, if rather short, episode if they didn't have them.

Har - yea. The forces against the machinery could be great. On the other hand, the ocean has a lot of give against the propeller, right? I assume that this would dampen things a bit. It's not like the road against a tire (throwing yer tranny into reverse at high speed). Also - how fast is 40kts in kph (i.e. land vehicle speed)? A knot is like a mile, is it like a mile/hour? If so 40kts = ~65kph or so? At that speed slowing down a third of your speed isn't that severe (though I usually wear a seatbelt anyway). Maybe I've got the numbers all wrong. How fast do warships go, compared say, to cars?

I guess the issue is that the destroyers in this game have a virtually instantaneous reduction in speed, which is probably impossible.

First the captain would have to give the order "All reverse full!". Then the lee helmsman (the guy manning the engine telegraph) has to yank the levers all the way forward and back again, which sounds the alarm on the telegraph in the engine room, and set it to all reverse full. Then the chief engineer has to shout the order to the guy manning the throttles. After that the chief does the same with his telegraph to tell the bridge he got the order right. At the same time the engineer on the throttles has to disengage the transmission (old ships with reciprocating engines would have had to bring them to a halt and reverse them, but that's old technology. Steam turbines have to run at high speeds to be efficent, so they have gears for lower speeds and reverse). Once the engines are disengaged they have to wait for the propellors to come to a halt. Then they engage the reverse gears and go for it.

All told if the crew are good enough then a destroyer should come to a compete stop in about two minutes.

Actually, destroyers were (and still are I think) the fastest anf most agile machines, taking in account their weight and dimensions. I once spoke with a venerable gentleman who serverd on an american destroyer in the Royal Navy, and amongst other things, he told me that when a ship blew up in their convoy, or the alarm was given that a submarine was in the area, you could not stand on you feet on the deck when the ship was accelerating to full ahead and zigzaging in the same time.
