Today ive started what will probably be my final career game before i take a break from SH3 for a little while. This game will probably take me awhile to complete, so i figure by the time im done, i'll REALLY need to take a little break from the game.
Normally i pick nondescript, not famous boats. use the real captains name, use the boat the year it was commissioned, and if possible, use the same tower insigna that the boat orginally used. Orginally for this career i was going to pick the last type IXC ever commissioned. I thought it fitting that the last boat buillt should be my last game before a break. However, instead, after having read "Steel Boats, Iron hearts" once(the memior of a U505 Crewman, Hans' Greubler ) , and rereading some of it again, i thought maybe it more fitting to use Han's "luck old boat" as some sort of tribute to the man who's memior i have read.
The only thing im i intend to post in this log are pictures, the patrol log that SH3 commander generates, and a map of the route traveled every patrol. My hope is that through that "old photograph" look in these pictures, that the crew and boat will seem more alive, then just typing in action reports.
As an aside, if anyone ever thinks about using Thilo Bode or Peter Zschech, you should know that Hans had few kind words for Bode, and no kind words at all for Zschech. Infact according to Hans, they had some sort of special relationship. However, Lang was an excellent skipper and well respected, but U505's crew looked up to Axel-Olaf Loewe as a father. you'd really have to read his book to understand what the deal is with these men.
Unfortunatly i left the book at work so when i created my career i had to rely on uboatwaffle.net 's crew list for the officers. The rest of the crew im not renaming.. just the officers as they're the only ones you really deal directly with anyway.

What kind of a lax, lazy Captain are you, calling an enlisted man by his first name? Next thing you know they'll be expecting favors, or treating you like an equal. Can mutiny be far behind?
Seriously, though, great start so far.

Nice. What's your policy for this campaign? IX/VII? What year, what strategy? I should hope that you will aim for the convoys and resist the powerful, basic temptation to fire single shots at single merchants with the hopes of an instant kill. :p. Sorry - had to. But really - what prolonged yer interested in SH3? I'm right at the border here, oscillating between SH3 and others (hitman 4, playing for the sociopath rating on each level:arrgh!:).

P.S. One of yer captions sounds really familiar...

Nice idea. I have kept photo logs of every patrol as well as a written log. I have them all published at a website. I can always go back and peruse a previous patrol.

Starting in jan 1, 1941. IXC the whole way. DiD.
Crux of the game
- My version of UC with mini convoys with elite DE's and elite HK groups.
- ramped up AI passive hydros a bit, a few other tweaks.
- improved air power, etc etc
- NYGMs damge mod from TW 2. It took alot of experimentation before i finally gave in and used it, although i had to make a few changes. Fixed draft on C3 cargo. Its really 10 meters not 12. Had to cut n paste improved air powers changes into the zone file, and some uboat changes from one of the later hollywoods because the Uboat changes in the TW2 damage mod were centered around how they rezoned the uboats. fixed it so cargo ships will acutaly have cargo on decks, and changed some of the shipping names back to what they orginally were. I like C2 or C3 cargo. I hate IDing everything as mediem or large.
I don't really aim for convoys unless i know they're in the vacinity. I usually go where "BDU" orders me to go. Very rarely will i assign my own patrol grid. Just breaks continunity to me. If theres convoys enroute to where im gonig, or where im going, ill go after them. Ill take on HK groups if theres nothign else to do, but i dont sit around the western approches for days and days waiting for a convoy to appear.

Apparently theres a 12 picture limit per post now. I think im going to be grateful, that means i have an excuse to post less pictures per patrol, so ill have to be more picky. Besides, who wants to look at umpteen milion pictures of the same thing? :rotfl:
