My modern horse, or my character? I am level 31. I just got that Goldbrand sword, which I consider the best sword in the game (personal opinion of course)- dishes out up to 50 points of damage in a single swing with its additional 22 points of fire that can be used 80 times before a recharge. I like that sword! I'll post my stats later on when I take a screenshot of it.
If you mean my modern horse that supports this world has the following specs! :D
AMD X2 4400+ w/ Thermalright XP-90C and a Nexus 92 mm low RPM fan
2 GB Mushkin Black DDR 500
Visiontek x1900 XTX crossfire ready with an Arctic Cooler Accelero
ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe (ATI Crossfire 3200 based, dual 16x PCI-E slots)
Silverstone 600 WATT ST60F PSU
2x 120 GB SATA Seagate 7200.1 hooked to a ULI RAID 0 (over 90 MB/sec sustained)
Plextor Premium CD burner black
Plextor 712A DVD burner black
Sony DVD-ROM black
Floppy black
Coolermaster analog guage kit(Fan Volt, VU, Temp) in silver
Coolermaster Wavemaster Case (silver)
3x Panaflo L1A's 80 mm fans
+ whatever I forgot!
That is all that is in the case. I need to add a ATI Rage 550 theatre based board - probably another Visiontek, but I haven't finished my research yet. I also want a physics engine based board too. ATI is making one so I guess I'll hold off till that one is out before I choose, to see what it does.
I haven't had time to reload Gentoo (I was forced to dump my old load when I upgraded to the ULI RAID from the Silicon Image RAID - the Silicon Image RAID worked great for burst, but slowed down during sustained transfer and the ULI doesn't exhibit that problem, so I needed to) on it yet though or Windows Vista (Though I am downloading a Vista Beta from a friend at MS as I type this) so I am only running XP MCE 2005, and will probably put a small x64 parition on it soon too. I have about another 70 GB of unparitioned space left to test other OS's.
Weird that I might have 4 OS's on this system soon. Most I've ever had was three before this.

Yeah - no problem. I ran it on my older XP3200+ with 1 GB RAM, and a 9800 AIW video card just fine. I had to turn down resolution to 1024x768 and the grass qty, etc., but it worked good. The 5900XT should perform similar to the 9800 AIW (PRO).

PS. I want my ATI Theatre card!!!! I don't have any Tivo functions like my older 9800 AIW. I have an actual Tivo hooked up to my computer (my wife wants it to record TV, but I think that is a collosal waste of its capability, so I leave it hooked up to my computer!), but I can't even see what is being displayed on it without the ATI card.

Far Cry is a puny world compared to this. This is kind of like a bigger environment than Op Flashpoint is. The horse makes the world more managable though. Especially the expensive black horse - goes pretty fast.
I was disappointed to find out that Op Flashpoint, particulary resistance has real boundaries. I took off on one mission in which a tanks platoon was coming my way and I had to mine the place. So I thought I'd catch the tanks way up the road, but when I got there, I saw the road just had a start in the middle of no where, and then I watched the tanks spawn!!! Ahhh! I hate spawning!

Some years ago I took the biggets island, Nogova (map size 10x10 km), and crowded it with overland-patrols, and local garrisons guarding each settlement. I am nott sure, but I think I had over a hundred randomized patrols, with randomized groups psizes, starting loactions, and complex movement paths. No mission. I set up two bases where all equipment was available. Player simply dropped into the setup via mission editor, and had fun, alone, with a team, silent sneaking, noisy assault, no matter - total freedom of action to do whatever one wanted to do. Longest session i ever had was three simulated days and nights, before getting extracted again. I had so many things placed on the island that on my system performance dropped to the necessary minimum. Had a lot of fun with that one.

Oblivion does not use Safedisc. It uses only a simple DVD check, nothing more. They forgo any real copy protect measures on this thing, so respect it and don't copy it for your friends!
-S
See the following and heed its advice! No copying! -
No-CD Patch
Bethesda have taken a major step in the fight against stupid, intrusive copy protection systems by not using troublesome protection software such as SecuROM or StarForce on Oblivion. These copy protection systems cause many problems and performance issues on most PCs, however fortunately Oblivion avoids these and simply has a basic DVD check in place. I can't provide you with the details of how to obtain a No-DVD patch for Oblivion for legal reasons, but I can say that keeping the disc in the drive does not impact on your performance at all.
Furthermore, I want to stress that since Oblivion is arguably one of the best PC games available to date, noone should have any excuse for pirating this game. If you can afford a PC, and the game is available in your country, you can afford this game. A lot of people constantly whine about SecuROM or StarForce, but here we have a major games studio which has taken the gamble of not using such a restrictive protection system on such an amazing game - let's prove that they did not make a commercial mistake. Purchase a legitimate copy of the game as it will give you literally hundreds of hours of amazing gameplay, and given the way it can scale upwards, it will remain replayable for at least the next couple of years, ready to increase the eye candy for that next new machine or hardware upgrade you undertake.

Dunno. Takes a while on foot to travel the land, but you can do it pretty good on a fast horse. They have implemented fast travel so you can go back to places you have already been fairly quickly. This is useful for hauling treasure for sale back in town - fast travel between the 2 points. You don't have to use it, but it would be a pain not to.
Its much smaller than Daggerfall, but much bigger than Morrowind if that tells you anything.

Ordered it. I am far from being sure that my rig, especially the gfx-card can handle it, but let's see. If the settlements on the map are in correct scaling to the soze of the surrounding ladnscape, the world seem to be pretty small, but maybe that is not the important thing here.
Somehow I got the impression that this game maybe compares somehow to this old Amiga classic, "The Fairy Tale Adventure", at least concerning freedom to move whereever you wanted. And no, I have no intention to use the fats travel feature. I also already have reserved the tool that kills the compass feature of pointing to where items or locations of interest are to be found. Silly feature, that kills a lot of what a game of this type is about.

Sticking with AGP, and wanting to stay with nVdia as well, I think about an 7800 GS. But 3-400 euros still is beyond any reason, I think. 800 DM - I remember to have seen complete systems for that money. The whole hardware developement went crazy. During the last 2 years.

Well, you could get an ATI X850XT (256MB) for about 180€. Itīs a really great card for that price. I bought the slower X800XL one year ago for 300€ and Iīm still quite happy with it.

Many thanks.
I am not informed on the market situation currently. In what sequence do ATI and nVidia rate the quality of their boards by shortcuts nowadays (GS, GT, XT, XL etc.) ? I do not want to spend more money than 200 euros for a graphics board, and I also do not plan to change the mainboard (AGP) and get effectively a new system just to buy a PCI card. I do not plan with regard to Oblivion exclusively, but will try FSX at the end of this year as well. The card should be good enough for that, too.
When I bought my current FX5900XT, it already was late, which made it an excellent price-performance balance (170 Euros).
How does drivers of both companies compare today?

OMG, thatīs all very complicated, both companies have at least seven different designations each! Short answer: When you buy ATI cards look for XL or GTO2 (third-best), XT (second) or XTX (best). The fastest cards of the X8xx series use the XT-PE designation. For Nvidia cards itīs GS, GT and GTX and of course the older Ultra cards.
The real problem starts when you look at the model numbers. Doesnīt matter if itīs ATI or Nvidia, a higher model number doesnīt automatically mean that the card is faster. For example, the Nvidia 7300GS is slower than a 6800GS and ATIīs X1300XL is slower than a X800XL.
How does drivers of both companies compare today?
No difference, they both make very good drivers.

Thanks again. the game should arrive tomorrow, then I see what my current config makes of it. If there is any way to play it reasonable, it is also possible that I still wait for a later price-reduced card at the end of the year. AGP is dying out, the available model diversity already is severly limited, and it probably will be the last AGP card that I'll buy, so it will have to live for as long as I stay with my current system (and that will be very long, if it odes not brake - it fits all my needs).

Don't buy an unknown manufacturer. Most of them try and get you on price, and they will use a cheaper RAMDAC. That results in a blurry picture where nothing is sharp looking. Just warning you! :)

I agree 100% with that. I have such a love hate relationship with this game. I absolutely love playing it but I hate that I have almost no control over quitting.
After beating the main quest and numerous others, I started a new character and my goal is to visit every ruin, cave, bandit camp, statue, and landmark on the map. My devious goal was to cure my addiction to the game by just doing dungeon crawl after dungeon crawl hopefully to eventually bore me. So far I've cleared all of the northeastern part of the map and I'm still coming back for more.

If one does not care about the main plot, just works around, does some business and explorations, find oneself in simulating the daily routine from breakfat to bedtime, and is more concerned about the furniture for the flat one has bought than for the game's major quest - then this is the sweet and delicate smell of this magical word, the word gamers love more than any other, the word that is music in a digital soul - the word that listens to the sound of "immersion".

For whatever reason you canīt take screenshots when Antialiasing is enabled in Options. Disable it there and force AA via the control panel of your card, then it works. Or use Fraps to take screenshots, then you donīt need to switch it off in Options.
Oblivion saves the screenshots into the main game folder.

Ah... Good to know once the new card is here. There are plenty of opportunities for some beautiful desktop backgrounds - once my resolution is 1024+ again :)

After you enable screenshots in the ini, you can use the printscreen button on your keyboard - it will make bmp's.

HDR looks better than AA. Do you have an HDR capable card?

If one does not care about the main plot, just works around, does some business and explorations, find oneself in simulating the daily routine from breakfat to bedtime, and is more concerned about the furniture for the flat one has bought than for the game's major quest - then this is the sweet and delicate smell of this magical word, the word gamers love more than any other, the word that is music in a digital soul - the word that listens to the sound of "immersion".
The only part of the main quest that you should worry about is rescuing Martin. You must do it by like level 5, or no later than level 8. If you don't you will probably need to be like level 25 to beat it.
The reason is, if you wait too long, the Daedra become way too powerfull and just wipe out your guard escort, leaving you to be a one man army - hence the reason you need to be like level 25 - you must kill them all yourself. At like level 25, your guard escort will be able to hack em up in style helping you out a lot.

No, I have a X800XL. By the way, with your card you can play Oblivion with HDR and AA, just in case you didnīt know that yet.

HDR replaces both Bloom and AA. You are not able to use AA with HDR enabled.

At least someone is working on the problem. Can NVidia do the same thing?

No, not yet.
So, have you tried it? Is there a huge FPS drop?

I will tonight. I was more interested in getting to level 41 first! :)
