View Full Version : Sudden drop in VIIC speed?

Before my first patrol I equipped my VIIC with the exhaust-driven engine upgrade. With it, my speed at flank was usually around 19 knots, 17 knots when recharging batteries.
On my second patrol, during fairly calm weather with a nicely rested full crew in the diesel engine compartment I am now only getting about 16 knots, and the batteries are not being recharged.
has this happened to anyone else? I reloaded a save from the end of patrol 1 to regain lost tonnage, would that have affected my upgrades?
I also installed SH3 commander, but since I did not make any changes that would affect speed and/or upgrades I don't see why it would be to blame.
@Konnrade Sir,
If you should have set, standard propulsion,you will not charge batteries,also sea conditions, (weather) might be slowing you down.I recall you said it was calm :hmm: Quote-" I reloaded a save from the end of patrol 1 to regain lost tonnage, would that have affected my upgrades?"
perhaps,I recall some one recommending,no upgrades till after 1st patrol. LOL

My semantics are sometimes poor:p. By "the batteries are not being recharged" I meant to imply that the engines are set to standard mode.
When I get back to port I'll check and see if my engine upgrade is still there, perhaps reloading the game the upgrade was either lost, or it just ceased to count towards my engine power. Ordinarily I'd get about 16 or 17 knots even in winds of 15m/s or more during a gnarly storm. Getting 15 to 16 knots when winds are slow is not fun, especially if the crew is getting fatigued and wants to hurry back to port.
I'd hate to have to repurchase the upgrade, since 1500 prestige is never really disposable, but if I have to in order to regain my engine performance then I will. 3 knots can really make a difference when trying to intercept, after all. To make up for it, perhaps I'll spend some time lurking around south of greenland, picking off small defenseless merchants with the deck gun.

That could well be it. I remember I got an IXD2 and was hugely disappointed with its surface speed compared to a IXC. I had made of a point of getting the engine upgrade. After my patrol I went back to a IXC, got the engine upgrade, went out on patrol.....and it was as if the upgrade wasn't there. Sure enough when I returned to port it wasn't installed at all, even though I bloody well had done. I installed the upgrade again and everything was fine.
Sort of off topic, but what is the difference between the two engine upgrades? I mean, MAN Buchigeblase's exhaust-driven method versus GW Kapselgeblase's drive-shaft driven method? The descriptions don't exactly explain what either one does. Is one better than the other, or is one better for some conditions but worse for others? Anyone know?

This is just an educated guess, but I would think that the exhaust-driven device provides an overall larger increase in engine power.
If the supercharger is connected to the engine shaft in order to draw power, then that power to run it is subtracted from the power output of the engine. It would essentially use some of it's own power increase in order to function.
An exhaust driven device uses the pressure of the exhaust to run, which (comparatively) subtracts very little power from the engine. Although from what I know of engines (which is limited) the greater backpressure in the exhaust system might reduce fuel efficiency slightly.

I ain't no mechanical engineer. I believe the exhaust driven compressor bypasses some of the friction, and also allows for more versatile gearing. There's some cooling issues along with everything else. You can physically seperate the compressor from the combustion engine. The gas also tends to compress a bit against the force of the compressor's rotors, leaving some of the un-combusted fuel in the cylinder. The FAR (fuel-air ratio) has to be adjusted on these kinds of engines, usually by using an EGT (exhaust gas temperature) point.
As for the actual game, there is a speed difference of ~3kts between a minimally staffed engine room, and a 100% staffed engine room. The better the staffing, the higher your top speed.

With which, the MAN Buchigeblase (exhaust) or the GW Kapselgeblase (drive-shaft)? I never know which to upgrade to as neither one sounds better than the other, especially from a game perspective.

Name0=GWKapselgeblase
SpeedBoost0=1.1
Name1=MANBuchigeblase
SpeedBoost1=1.2

And there we have it. Thanks for digging in the files for that info.
Now, my apologies to Konnrade for hijacking his thread. Back to the originally scheduled conversation already in progress . . .

that wasn't really hijacking, it was rather relevant.
When I got back to harbor, I re-upgraded my engines. It fixed the problem, I'm now getting 19 knots at ahead flank once again.
Someone at Ubisoft owes me 1,500 prestige:damn:
Fab - Love the id picture. You are unquestionably the suavest son of a gun out here. I took my own Type 2 until March 1944 when I traded it in for the 21. Not only are you visually appealing, but have depth, good sense, and taste. Message me for my teenage daughter's phone number.
Crankshaft superchargers have more horsepower to compress air, and inject it into a piston than a exhaust driven turbo charger. Hence most military machines are supercharged like our airplanes giving them the ability to fly at greater altitudes while most civilian applications use turbo which is mechanically cheaper with better gas mileage. Also there is no power lag with superchargers.

Yup, the gui will steal your renown if your not looking. Cant trust anybody around here. If you change your torpedoes right after returning to base using renown, then quit the game and come back. The torpedoes are back the way they were with your renown still gone. Now I dont change anything until Ive rested, thought about, and ready to go out on patrol again.
