View Full Version : Angle On Bow
I have just recently started using manual targeting and manual TDC. Its easy to calculate range and speed, but how do you actually calculate AOB? Is it just a guessing game? 'Cause I hate guessing games ;). Could someone help me out please?
Also, is inputing the bearing of a target important?

Look at the ship and use the view of "ships under angle" in your ship ID book. Especially the bridge of a ship can be used to look at and estimate the angle the ship is viewed at.
Then just use the handy notepad tool and drag the viewing angle to the right setting.
Many people prefer the "lets plot everything like we are in a modern submarine" method to establish the various angles. But I personally find that a very unrealistic method.
I always plot the contact to the map, then calculate AOB from there. Easy and accurate.

Richard "Killer" O'Kane, while XO aboard the Wahoo, had the crew make a turn-table with a model ship in the middle. He would view the model ship thru the objective lens of a pair of binoculars (reversed) from across the officer's mess, while one of the crew tuned the model to various AOB.
O'Kane, got to where he could get within 1 or 2 degrees of actual AOB.
I guess the point is to--practice.
The target's superstructure is square and/or rectangular...use the corners and sides to guess the AOB of a box from across the room.
Best rgds,
The box thing is a really good idea, thanks :D.
