Song: Enter Sandman
Lyrics:
Say your prayers little one
Dont forget, my son
To include everyone
Tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
Till the sandman he comes
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
Off to never never land
Somethings wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they arent of snow white
Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragons fire
And of things that will bite
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
Off to never never land
Now I lay me down to sleep
Pray the lord my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
Pray the lord my soul to take
Hush little baby, dont say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
Its just the beast under your bed,
In your closet, in your head
Exit light
Enter night
Grain of sand
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
Were off to never never land
I have to say, I´ve heard hundreds of artists, but Metallica is and will be the number one on my list, always.

Morgenlich leuchtend im rosigen Schein from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1868). Libretto and score by Richard Wagner (1813-1883). It is simply gorgeous.
Morgenlich leuchtend im rosigen Schein,
von Blüt und Duft
geschwellt die Luft,
voll aller Wonnen,
nie ersonnen,
ein Garten lud mich ein, -
dort unter einem Wunderbaum,
von Früchten reich behangen,
zu schaun in sel'gem Liebestraum,
was höchstem Lustverlangen.
Erfüllung kühn verhiess,
das schönste Weib:
Eva im Paradies.
Abendlich dämmernd umschloss mich die Nacht;
auf steilem Pfad
war ich genaht
zu einer Quelle
reiner Welle,
die lockend mir gelacht:
dort unter einem Lorbeerbaum,
von Sternen hell durchschienen,
ich schaut im wachen Dichtertraum,
von heilig holden Mienen,
mich netzend mit dem edlen Nass,
das hehrste Weib,
die Muse des Parnass!
Huldreichster Tag,
dem ich aus Dichters Traum erwacht!
Das ich erträumt, das Paradies,
in himmlisch neu verklärter Pracht
hell vor mir lag,
dahin lachend nun der Quell den Pfad mir wies;
die, dort geboren,
den Ruhm erkoren,
der Erde lieblichstes Bild,
als Muse mir geweiht,
so heilig ernst als mild,
ward kühn von mir gefreit,
am lichten Tag der Sonnen,
durch Sanges Sieg gewonnen
Parnass und Paradies!
Or, for the English speakers:
Shining in the rosy light of morning,
the air heavy
with blossom and scent,
full of every
unthought-of joy
a garden invited me
and beneath a wondrous tree there,
richly hung with fruit,
to behold in blessed dream of love
boldly promising fulfilment
to the highest of joy's desires,
the most beautiful woman
Eva in Paradise.
In the evening twilight,
night enfolded me;
on a steep path
I had approached
a spring
of pure water
which laughed enticingly to me:
there beneath a laurel-tree,
with stars shining brightly through its leaves,
in a poet's waking dream I beheld,
holy and fair of countenance,
and sprinkling me with the precious water,
the most wonderful woman,
the Muse of Parnassus!
Most gracious day,
to which I awoke from a poet's dream!
The Paradise of which I had dreamed
in heavenly, new-transfigured splendor
lay bright before me,
to which the spring laughingly now showed me
the path; she, born there,
my heart's elect,
earth's loveliest picture
destined to be my Muse,
as holy and grave as she is mild,
was boldly wooed by me;
in the sun's bright daylight
through victory in song, I had won
Parnassus and Paradise!

Du bist wohl ein Frauengenießer, was? :)
Many songs and lyrics on my mind. Couldn't say that this or that is better than all the others. But at present this one is often on my mind, in the duett version by Sharon and Caroline Corr: "No Frontier" by Jimmy McCarthy:
If life is a river and your heart is a boat
And just like a water baby, baby born to float
And if life is a wild wind that blows way on high
And your heart is Amelia dying to fly
Heaven knows no frontiers and I've seen heaven in your eyes
And if life is a bar room in which we must wait
'Round the man with his fingers on the ivory gates
Where we sing until dawn of our fears and our fates
And we stack all the dead men in self addressed crates
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day
When fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its ways
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
If your life is a rough bed of brambles and nails
And your spirit's a slave to man's whips and man's jails
Where you thirst and you hunger for justice and right
And your heart is a pure flame of man's constant night
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day when fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its ways
And heaven has its ways
When all will harmonise
And you know what's in our hearts
The dream will realise
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
but there is so much other good music as well, classic, pop, jazz, whatever...

Crazy Man Michael
traditional performed by the Incomparable Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention
Within the fire and out upon the sea,
Crazy man Michael was walking.
He met with a Raven with eyes black as coals,
And shortly they fell to talking.
Your future, your future I will tell to you,
Your future you often have asked me.
Your true love will die by your own right hand,
And Crazy man Michael will curse at thee.
Michael he ranted and Michael he raved,
And beat at the four winds with his fists so.
He laughed and he cried, he shouted and he swore,
For his mad mind had trapped him with a kiss so.
You speak with an evil, you speak with a hate,
You speak for the Devil that haunts me.
For is she not the fairest in all the broad land?
Your sorcerer's words are to taunt me.
He took out his dagger of fire and of steel,
And struck down the Raven through the heart oh.
The bird fluttered long and the sky it did spin,
And the cold earth did wander and start oh.
Oh, where is the Raven that I struck down dead,
That here did lie on the ground oh?
I see that my true love with a wound so rare,
Where her lover's heart it did pound oh.
Crazy man Michael, he wanders and walks,
And talks to the night and the day oh.
But his eyes they are sane and his speech it is plain,
And he longs to be far away oh.
Michael he whistles the simplest of tunes,
And asks of the wild rose their pardon.
For his true love is flown into every flower grown,
And he must be keeper of the garden.

The Velvet Underground, "Sweet Jane"
Standing on the corner,
Suitcase in my hand
Jack is in his corset, and jane is her vest,
And me Im in a rocknroll band hah!
Ridin in a stutz bear cat, jim
You know, those were different times!
Oh, all the poets they studied rules of verse
And those ladies, they rolled their eyes
Sweet jane! whoa! sweet jane, oh-oh-a! sweet jane!
Ill tell you something
Jack, he is a banker
And jane, she is a clerk
Both of them save their monies, ha
And when, when they come home from work
Oh, sittin down by the fire, oh!
The radio does play
The classical music there, jim
The march of the wooden soldiers
All you protest kids
You can hear jack say, get ready, ah
Sweet jane! come on baby! sweet jane! oh-oh-a! sweet jane!
Some people, they like to go out dancing
And other peoples, they have to work, just watch me now!
And theres even some evil mothers
Well theyre gonna tell you that everything is just dirt
Yknow that, women, never really faint
And that villains always blink their eyes, woo!
And that, yknow, children are the only ones who blush!
And that, life is just to die!
And, everyone who ever had a heart
They wouldnt turn around and break it
And anyone who ever played a part
Oh wouldnt turn around and hate it!
Sweet jane! whoa-oh-oh! sweet jane! sweet jane!
Heavenly wine and roses
Seems to whisper to her when he smiles
Heavenly wine and roses
Seems to whisper to her when she smiles
La lala lala la, la lala lala la
Sweet jane
Sweet jane
Sweet jane

I'm not a lyric man myself, but enjoy game music mostly. Most of the music from the Command & Conquer series is great, especially Hell March, and Jesper Kyd's scores in Hitman 2 are brilliant. Kraftwerk doesn't go down to badly either.
A little overrated......IMHO
Yup, true. But I still love it and most of the other songs by Metallica.

Nick Cave and the Bad seeds "opium Tea"
Here I sleep the morning through
'Til the wail of the call to prayer awakes me
And there ain't nothing at all to do but rise and follow
The day wherever it takes me
I stand at the window and I look at the sea
And I am what I am, and what will be will be
I stand at the window and I look at the sea
And I make me a pot of opium tea
Down at the port I watch the boats come in
Watch the boats come in can do something to you
And the kids gather around with an outstretched hand
And I toss them a diram or two
Well, I wonder if my children are thinking of me
Cause I am what I am, and what will be will be
I wonder if my kids are thinking of me
And I smile and I sip my opium tea
At night the sea lashes the rust red ramparts
And the shapes of hooded men who pass me
And the moan of the wind laughs and laughs and laughs
The strange luck that fate has cast me
Well, the cats on the rampart sing merrily
That he is what he is and what will be will be
Yeah, the cats on the rampart sing merrily
And I sit and I drink of my opium tea
I'm a prisoner here, I can never go home
There is nothing here to win or lose
There are no choices needed to be made at all
Not even the choice of having to choose
Well, I'm a prisoner here, yes, but I'm also free
Cause I am what I am and what will be will be
I'm a prisoner here, yeah, but I'm also free
And I smile and I sip my opium tea.
Which country´s song was the 'We are winners of the eurovision'? That rocked! :rotfl:
Oh and another favorite, tho it has no lyrics; Barber - Adagio for Strings ( Platoon theme)

That was Lithuania, I believe :p
***
Gah, what an awful thread this is!
You do realize that I can't even pick a favorite song of mine by a certain artist, let alone a favorite song in general! :nope:
Well, I'll just go through and remember some that are worth highlighting eventually.
For starters, early King Crimson was amazing...
King Crimson - Epitaph (1969)
The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams
Where every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams
Will noone lay the laurel wreath
When silence drowns the screams?
"Confusion"
Will be my epitaph
As I crawl a cracked
And broken path
If we make it
We can all
Sit back
And laugh...
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying...
---
Between the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known
Knowledge is a deadly friend
If noone sets the rules
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools...
"Confusion"
Will be my epitaph
As I crawl a cracked
And broken path
If we make it
We can all
Sit back
And laugh...
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying...
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying...
Oh, wait, wait, how can I forget this song! Easily the song I identify with the most myself...
TRANSLATED FROM RUSSIAN
DDT - Rozhdennyi v SSSR (Born in the USSR)
At first it was evening
Then came I
Yesterday - words and wind
Today - into soil
In the old graveyard
Where enemies ressurected
I understood something
Getting up off the wrong foot
Hey-ey-ey-ey-ey,
Born in the USSR
Hey-ey-ey-ey-ey,
Born in the USSR
Not a second without a fight
Believe in death and life
Into the eyes of your dog
We're not afraid to look
Today is victory
Understand and forgive
There's nothing left for us
But we've plenty to give
Hey-ey-ey-ey-ey,
Born in the USSR
Hey-ey-ey-ey-ey,
Born in the USSR
---
You - the further, the steeper
You're almost the sunset
Hello, ancient Russia!
I'm your nervous brother
What will hope return us?
What will beauty save?
Yesterday, you owned an empire
But today you're an orphan
Hey-ey-ey-ey-ey,
Born in the USSR
Hey-ey-ey-ey-ey,
Born in the USSR
And, how can I forget one of my most favorite lyricists/singers, Captain Beefheart!
Two from him :hmm:
Captain Beefheart - Dachau Blues
Dachau blues those poor Jews
Dachau blues those poor Jews
Dachau blues, Dachau blues those poor Jews
Still cryin` `bout the burnin` back in World War Two`s
One mad man six million lose
Down in Dachau blues, down in Dachau blues
The world can`t forget that misery
`n the young ones now beggin` the old ones please
t` stop bein` madmen
`fore they have t` tell their children
`bout the burnin`s back in World War Three`s
War One was balls `n powder `n blood `n snow
War Two rained death `n showers `n skeletons
Dancin` `n screamin` `n dyin` in the ovens
Cough `n smoke `n dyin` by the dozens
Down in Dachau blues
Down in Dachau blues
Sweet little children with doves on their shoulders
Their eyes rolled back in ecstasy cryin`
Please old man stop this misery
They`re countin` out the devil
With two fingers on their hands
Beggin` the Lord don`t let the third one land
On World War Three
On World War Three...
and
Captain Beefheart - My Human Gets Me Blues
I saw yuh baby dancin' in yer x'ray gingham dress
I knew you were under duress
I knew you under yer dress
Just keep comin' Jesus
Yer the best dressed
You look dandy in the sky but you don't scare me
Cause I got you here in my eye
In this lifetime you got 'mhumangetsmeblues
With yer jaw hangin' slack 'n yer hair's curlin'
Like an ole navy fork stickin' in the sunset
The way you were dancins I knew youwd never come back
You were strainin 't' keep yer'
Old black cracked patent shoes
In this lifetime you got m'humangetsmeblues
Well the way you'd been ole lady
I could see the fear in yer windows
Under yer furry crawlin' brow
Uh silver bow rings up in inches
You were afraid you'd be the devils red wife
But it's alright God dug yer dance
'n would have you young 'n in his harum
Dress you the way he wants cause he never had uh doll
Cause everybody made him uh boy
'n God didn't think t' ask his preference
You can bring yer dress 'n yer favorite dog
'n yer husbands cane
'n yer old spotted hog
Cause in this lifetime
You've got m'humangetsmeblues
I have lived too long and my musical tastes are too broad to have a single "favorite song" so here's one of my favorite lyric sets:
Uneasy Rider
Charlie Daniels
I was takin a trip out to L.A.
Toolin along in my cheverolet
Tokin on a number and diggin on the radio
Just as I crossed the Mississippi line
I heard that highway start to whine
And I knew that left rear tire was about to blow
Well the spare was flat and I got uptight
Cause there wasn't a filling station in sight
So I just limped on down the shoulder on the rim
I went as far as I could and when I stopped the car
It was right in front of this little bar
Kind of a red-neck lookin joint called the Dew Drop Inn
I stuffed my hair up under my hat
And told the bartender that I had a flat
And would he be kind enough to give me change for a one
There was one thing I was sure proud to see
There wasn't a soul in the place except for him and me
He just looked disgusted and pointed toward the telephone
I called up the station down the road a ways
He said he wasn't very busy today
And he could have somone out there in just about 10 minutes or so
He said," Now, you just stay right where yer at!"
And I didn't bother to tell the darn fool
That I sure as hell didn't have anyplace else to go
So I ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar
When some guy walked in and said, "Who owns this car
With the peace sign, the mag wheels and the four on the floor?"
He looked at me and I damn near died
And I decided that I'd just wait outside
So I laid a dollar on the bar and headed for the door
Just when I wthought I'd get outta there with my skin
These 3 big dudes come strollin in
With one old drunk chick and some fella with green teeth
Now the last thing I wanted was to get into a fight
In Jackson Mississippi on a Saturday night
Especially when there was three of them and only one of me
I was almost to the door when the biggest one
Said, "You tip your hat to this lady, son!"
And when I did, all that hair fell out from underneath
They all started laughin and I felt kinda sick
And I knew I better think of something pretty quick
So I just reached out and kicked old green teeth right in the knee
Now he let out a yell that'd curl yer hair
But before he could move I grabbed me a chair
And said "Now watch him Folks cause he's a fairly dangerous man!"
"You may not know it but this man is a spy.
He's a undercover agent for the FBI
And he's been sent down here to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan!"
He was still bent over holdin on to his knee
But everybody else was looking and listening to me
And I laid it on thicker hand heavier as I went
"He's a friend of them long haired, hippy-type, pinko fags!
I betchya he's even got a commie flag
tacked up on the wall inside of his garage."
"He's a snake in the grass, I tell ya guys.
He may look dumb but that's just a disguise,
He's a mastermind in the ways of espionage"
"Would you believe this man has gone as far
As tearing Wallace stickers off the bumpers of cars.
And he voted for George McGovern for President."
They started lookin real suspicious at him
He jumped up and said "Now just wait a minute Jim!
You know he's lying I been living here all of my life!"
"I'm a faithful follower of Brother John Birch
And I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church.
And I aint even got a garage, you can call home and ask my wife!"
Then he started saying somethin bout the way I was dressed
But I didn't wait around to hear the rest
I was too busy moving and hoping I didn't run outta luck
When I hit the door I was making tracks
And they were just taking my car down off the jacks
So I threw the man a twenty and jumped in and fired that mother up
Mario Andretti wouldda sure been proud
Of the way I was movin when I passed that crowd
Coming out the door and headed toward me at a trott
Now I guess I should of gone ahead and run
But somehow I just couldn't resist the fun
Of chasing them all just once around the parking lot
I had them all out there steppin and fetchin
Like their heads was on fire and their asses was catchin
then I figgered I had better go ahead and split before the cops got there
When I hit the road I was really wheelin
Had gravel flyin and rubber squeelin
And I didn't slow down till I was almost to Arkansas
I think I'm gonna reroute my trip
I wonder if anybody'd think I'd flipped
If I went to L.A., via Omaha
ARTIST: Richard Thompson (Also performed by Del (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/artist/glance/-/34396/102-2406304-9448927) Mcoury "Del and the Boys"
TITLE: 1952 Vincent Black Lightning
Said Red Molly to James that's a fine motorbike
A girl could feel special on any such like
Said James to Red Molly, well my hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Box Hill they did ride (And down to Knoxville they did ride - Del Mcoury Version)
Said James to Red Molly, here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man
I've fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride
Come down, come down, Red Molly, called Sergeant McRae
For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
And said I'll give you my Vincent to ride
Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeveses won't do
They don't have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
He said I've got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride
