Was looking around after my patrol and noticed I no longer have any Petty Officers to give quals to - they all got 'em! I'm also quickly running out of Officers to hand them to as well.

Nope, i hand pick my crew, and keep them :P No rotations on my boat!

I let SHIII Commander dismiss them for me. If SHIV doesn't get rid of them 20-30 at a time (as the U.S. Navy historically did) then I might do it myself.

Only when I take a VIIC and choose the conning tower with the three flak mounts, and I have petty officers I qualified for the deckgun. Otherwise there's no crew rotation going on.

About 3-4 patrols ago i was thinking the same...
The next patrol achieved 14 dead man (1 officer fully qualified/promoted/decorated with over 30 patrol on his shoulders, 3 pettyofficer, 10 sailors) and 32% of HI...for 40k of tonnage, damn too bad!

I don't dismiss my sailors. Well, yet. But if sailors prove themselves to be incompetent... :shifty:

I roll d6 for every member of the crew other than the watch officers. On a roll of 1, they go. That usually nets me three to five guys on each patrol who leave. I make sure I do this before I give qualifications out. No reason to make this system harsher by giving a qualification to someone then having him leave.

I transfer out IWOs after maybe three or four patrols. Usually bump the IIWO up to IWO and bring in a new IWO.

The only problem is while this might have been done during the war, in real life replacements might come on board who did 6 patrols on another boat, went off to special school, and got promoted. So the "new guy" might be the most experienced in any given area, but with my system I get only raw recruits. I wish there was another way to try and keep historical results in the game.

Perhaps I'll start using SH3 Commander to rename some of the ones who roll a 1 instead of dumping them entirely. Shame I can't promote them in SH3 Commander without having the prerequisite experience built up.

I booted Bernard off my boat, but have kept the rest and I'll not handing them back to Bdu, even with threats of a transfer to the Russian Front.

Personally i beleive the transfer feature of sh3 commander is utterly pointless and stupid.

It may be good for sailor steve and the other military fanatics here but for the average player its down right annoying.

Dismiss some of my crew? NEVER! I know them just like I know my own children  and I'll not let Commander dismiss ANY of them.

I'm curious, how can a feature which by *default* is switched OFF - and notwithstanding this can easily be switched off - be "down right annoying"? If you never turn it on, it doesn't interfere and hence you never notice it? :hmm: :-?

I'm just keen for you to qualify this emotive piece of non constructive feedback...

I let SH3 Commander dismiss my sailors - sometimes I do it myself if it suits me: e.g. my seasoned Oberleutnant should get his own command and at the same time my Fährnirch gets his promotion.

Now I wonder where all those experienced men are dismissed to - other boats, sure, but why do I NEVER receive experienced men from other boats?

So sometimes I`m using SH3 Commander to get my new man some qualification - sometimes not.

Hmm now its the first time I´m thinking that a random replacement feature in SH3 Cmdr would be handy...that suggestion post for 2.6 still open?

I'll give it some thought over the weekend. It's not as simple as just "picking a name" - all crew variables need to be created/randomised to ensure that sometimes you get experienced crewmen and sometimes you get noobs. It's a bit of work, which if I think about it, I'm sure I've looked at it before and ended up putting it in the "too much of a hassle" basket...

Maybe I'll let Scorpius test whatever I come up with. :rotfl:

I don't. I <3 my crew. And on those long patrols, we grow very 'close'.

This is a little off topic, but how did you get the two "dots" above the letter "a" in Fahrnirch? I assumed you used ALT + the number pad, would you tell me what the numbers were, please.

You can look up any of those combinations for accents and such if you go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map. If it's not there, you can add the character map from your Windows installation disks.

But to answer your question, the umlaut over the a is from Ctrl+0228 using the keypad.

Thank you very much Sir!

Also, you can use the Windows character map (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools)to either directly generate the proper characters, or when you select the appropriate one, the key combo will show in the bottom left corner.

LOL; that's a classic battletech thing. The Skye Republic is a part of House Steiner with strong separatist tendencies; I identify myself as being with that faction, when I have the choice of doing so. I really do live in Austin, Texas.
