The collapse of fish populations around the world due to overfishing has created serious international friction. This is particularly true in the Atlantic. More and more often, European fishing boats have illegally entered Canadian waters. Canada has attempted to resolve the issue via diplomatic channels, but without success.
Two months ago, the Canadian people elected a new government. The new Prime Minister warned that Canada would deal harshly with illegal fishing. Barely a month later, Canadian warships sank three Spanish fishing boats in the Labrador Sea; twenty Spanish sailors perished in the icy waters.
Spain has declared it will not tolerate these barbarous acts. It has warned Canada that its fishing fleets will now be protected by naval vessels and that any Canadian warships approaching them will be fired on. Other European nations have also expressed their outrage at these events. Whether they will assist Spain in any Atlantic operations remains to be seen. The United States has tried to serve as a moderator and ease tensions between Canada and Spain, but has met with little success to date.

This database is not intended to reflect reality, it is a collection of my own

Shortly after the Six Day War, Soviet forces joined briefly with Egyptian forces against Israel in a "War of Attrition." Although this failed to seriously damage Israel, it laid the foundation for future joint Soviet-Egypt military action.
By 1990, the progress towards peace made by Sadat and Begin fifteen years earlier has mostly fallen by the wayside. Soviet forces have returned to Egypt. Intelligence suggests that they may again initiate joint attacks against Israel.

David Ennis has kindly decided to share his private collection of vintage Harpoon Classic scenarios with the Harpoon community. All 117 of these scenarios have never before been publicly available. David is the 15th designer to post his scenarios. This makes a total of 123 scenarios released this year and we aren't even out of January, yet!
This must be a record for the greatest number of scenarios published in a single day. Congratulations and thanks to David for sharing his work. Comments and suggestions are encouraged by the author.

Ukraine's "Orange Revolution" has failed. The pro-Russian party which had won the last elections has used its renewed power to move the country back towards Russia and an autocratic regime.
Russian forces were invited to "secure" Ukraines borders against "potential aggressors". There has been a massive inflow of Russian naval aircraft and Ukraine is now "guarded" by Russian warships and subs too.
Few hours prior to that parts of Ukraines armed forces declared they will not follow any orders of the new regime dominated by Russia. They have taken side for "Free Ukraine" - a political movement of those still believing in the "Orange Revolution".
The "Free Ukrainian Forces" (FUF) have joined a US carrier group which has arrived in order to protect Romania against any Russian attack out of Ukraine.
Stakes are high and an epic clash is about to begin.

A few years in the future...
A recent dispute in the United Nations regarding the relationship between North Korea and Iran has escalated in recent weeks because of remarks made by South Korean government. Iran has declared it will no longer allow South Korea to export oil from the Persian Gulf. South Korea has responded by moving warships into the area to escort tankers. They have also transferred a number of military aircraft to the area, basing them at Abu Dhabi.

The Backyard - Part Two: Final Shootout

The Cold War finally went hot and furious battles arose all around the world. This Westpac scenario deals with a final US multicarrier attack supported by Japanese forces in the West Pacific. The US forces have neutralized all but one Soviet bases in the theatre. Now it is time to finish the job.
But beware: The Soviets have reinforced their last bastion to the utmost.
This scenario is the sequel to the official HCE WestPac scen No. 9 The Backyard. It is very large, too.

Herman, just got my copy of Harpoon Classic Gold 02 back on my machine and noticed that alot of these scenarios are for Harpoon Classic Gold 05. I have looked on the AGSI website and cannot find any reference to a 2005 edition.
Am I being a biff or is the 02 edition the same?:hmm:
Sorry about that. 2005 was when the HCE was previously meant to be released. So it's a couple of years late... I guess I need to change the title. :D
In general, you might get some of the scens rated as 2005 to work on your Harpoon Gold edition (2002), but there's no guarantee. The HCCE release incorporates some new database fields not found in the HCGold edition. It might cause a crash for you if you play the older version. However, you might get lucky, too.

Ok cool, thanks for the reply. Think I'll just stick to HCG02 as I never got round to getting anywhere near finishing it!
HCG 2002 is a very fun and enjoyable game. Nothing wrong with it.
Just to let you know, HCE has area ECM incorporated. This simply isn't available in HCG. If you've every played a game with ECM and compared it to one without ECM, you might fight it like night and day. Just try fighting a war without effective Prowlers or Raven jammers.
I hope that they'll release a demo some day so that you can see for yourself. The results will knock your socks off. :D

HCDB-071223 is the first "post release" version of the HCDB, the official database for Harpoon Commander's Edition.
Please note that this version incorporates certain major changes to the Game Engine (GE) code which will be released by way of a patch, including:
(1) Major improvements to the gunnery model (magazines are now fully implemented for surface ships, SAM/AAA batteries, etc).
(2) The expansion of electronic warfare to surface ships and mobile land units (i.e. chaff, flares, point defense jammers).
Therefore, until the patch becomes available, these new features will not be fully functional.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the Westpac battleset.
The Soviet HEN submarines - the Hotel class SSBNs, the Echo class SSGNs and the November class SSNs - that began deploying in the early 1960s introduced a major technological breakthrough that gave them a dramatic acoustic advantage over the US Navy's Skipjacks and Skates. The new concept was rafting - where a submarine's engineering plant was placed on a flexible mount or raft within the submarine - dramatically reduced the transmission of mechanical vibrations through the hull, and into the water.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the EC2003 GIUK Gap battleset.
The three small Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are no strangers to a hard life of aggression, occupation, and oppression. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, a determined populace grabbed the opportunity for independence once again. But history had taught them a lesson: that their long term survival was dependent upon becoming part of an international alliance. In Spring 2004 they became full members of NATO. Without any strategic depth, there is nothing that the Baltic states could do to stop a reasonably determined Russian attack, so instead NATO has opted to do such things as emphasize early warning and control, improve the defensive capabilities of local light forces, and have NATO air forces take turns in providing fighters for territorial air defence. There is at least one significant flaw in the arrangement. The Baltic states still rely heavily on Russia for their supplies of natural gas and oil, and their power grids remain linked. In 2007, they entered into an agreement with neighbour (and NATO partner) Poland to replace the ageing (Chernobyl type) nuclear reactor at Ignalina in Lithuania. The Ignalina reactor has now been shut down, and the new powerplant is still under construction, despite the protests of Russia and Belarus regarding the increased pressure on the regional fossil fuel supply. The Baltic states therefore remain critically exposed, and their former ruler has decided to make its move.

The initial release version of the Harpoon Commander's Edition (HCE) 'Americas' Database (HCDA-080302) is now available.
In anticipation of the soon to be released BattleSet Builder, in which HCE players will now be able to play scenarios across the entire globe, I've put together a new database that focuses on the 'Americas' - North, South and Central.
The Harpoon Commander's Edition Database - Americas (HCDA) contains a wealth of new aircraft, ships, submarines and installations for the theater, as well as retaining and/or adapting many platforms from the official database of the Harpoon Commander's Edition simulation, the HCDB. This allows the fullest range of scenarios to be created with the BattleSet Builder tool, from Soviet/Cuban interventions in Central America and the Caribbean basin, to the 1982 Falklands conflict between Great Britain and Argentina, to an action by the People's Republic of China to protect its 'investment' in the Panama Canal, to a Second Civil War between the States.
As always, a database is forever a 'work in progress' and the HCDA will continue to be improved, updated and expanded as time goes on. I would be happy to receive your requests for new additions to the HCDA (especially if you're writing scenarios for the rest of us to enjoy!) in the same manner as I have for the HCDB. And, as before, the HCDA will retain the same general database philosophy as the HCDB.
The initial release version of the HCDA is now available from the Downloads section of this website.
Stay tuned. There's more good news in store for HCE players, particularly if you're big on the Second World War.

The time is the present, and the Kosovo crisis and the resulting Serbian invasion has led to long simmering tensions between Russia and the US exploding, with the sinking of an American submarine found within Russian territorial waters near Archangel. The Commander of the ASW frigate involved has been cashiered for his aggressiveness, but the loss of USS Dallas and 155 American sailors has the US public infuriated, and the US government is bent on revenge. American diplomatic staff have been recalled, and war is imminent. Unfortunately, the AFS Kuznetsov with his escorts is in the Atlantic on exercises, far from friendly ports and exposed to American attacks. The US has claimed that this task group is a threat to American shipping and must surrender to US forces. Your job is to get him and his escorts home safely in the face of overwhelming opposition.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the EC2003 Battle for the Mediterranean Battleset.
Although formally established by presidential decree on a warm summer day in August 1992, the slow and painful partition of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet between Ukraine and the newly independent Russian Federation took several more years. Arguably, the first ship of the Ukrainian Navy came into being on 26 January 1992 and in considerably less peaceful fashion. The collapse of the USSR in December 1991 caused the crew of the Project 159A (NATO Petya II) class light frigate SKR-112, most of them Ukrainian by nationality, to make a fateful decision. That morning in January, captain-lieutenant Serhiy Nastenko raised the state flag of Ukraine aboard his ship and together, he and his crew took an oath of allegiance to their new motherland. Black Sea Fleet Command was outraged, compelling Nastenko and his crew to eventually flee from the Russian naval base at Donuzlav, hoping to seek refuge in Odessa. Ships and aircraft of the Black Sea Fleet still loyal to Moscow set out in pursuit of the mutineer.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the Westpac Battleset.
The war in Central Europe is bogging down, and although NATO has suffered horrendous losses, the Soviet armored thrust has lost its momentum. There are rumours of growing dissension and unrest among the upper echelons of military command in Moscow. The risk of the Soviets resorting to the use of nuclear weapons in desperation has climbed considerably in the past few days. US Navy ballistic missile submarines, already deployed and at sea, have been directed to their patrol stations in case things go south. Several of these boomers, including the USS Tennessee, have been ordered to take up positions where they could potentially exploit depressed trajectory launches of their missile load, reducing warning time substantially.

This scenario is designed for play by the BLUE side.
Environmental terrorists have disabled the world's first floating nuclear power plant, the massive Russian Rosenergoatom-Sevmash platform in the Barents Sea, inadvertently triggering a meltdown of one of the two reactors and a resultant environmental catastrophe.
The eco terrorists are a previously unknown group, going by the name Desdenova, and with apparent links to Norway. The Norwegians were opposed to the floating nuclear power plant from the outset, and Russia now blames Oslo for having masterminded the attack, claiming an attempt to grab oil and gas reserves in the region.
The Royal Norwegian Navy is moving to protect its territorial integrity and to attempt to contain the contamination, but the Russians have declared an absolute exclusion zone in the Barents and have prohibited all foreign entities from entering the area. A Royal Navy carrier group is caught in the storm.

France has gained confidence in its current military arsenal and wishes to show the UK that it could easily overpower the belief that "Britannia rules the waves", which has long scalded France since the defeat of Napolean.
They intend on seizing and maintaining control of the Channel and then controlling all traffic that is heading for Britain.
The French have publicly announced this act through the media as the English Defence Secretary watched in utter disbelief that no political discussions were ever made. This comes as a complete surprise to the British and its armed forces are now under extreme pressure to mobilise and stop the French from taking hold of the precious Channel.
The UK has now warned the French government that such actions will be met with a harsh military response to which they have received no reply.

Operation Philippine Crunch

Three Months ago, Chinese forces staged an unexpected and swift assault on the Philippine island of Manila and has laid claim to the large northern landmass. The Chinese claimed to NATO that this attack was necessary to crush anti-Chinese terrorists that were based on the island.
NATO was never aware of any terrorism in China which was being co-ordinated. Further suspicions of ill-doing are being raised by the fact that reports have been coming out that the Chinese appear to be building defences and seem to have no intention of leaving the island.
US intelligance has determined that the attack was fueled by an intent to build nuclear missile launch facilities off of the Chinese mainland and ever closer to US-owned territories, in the hope that their anti-terrorism story could stall any attempt by NATO to react to their actions, long enough for them to establish a strong military presence on the island and then spread their occupation further through the Philippine island when the US began to withdraw from a few years ago.
The US has managed to steam a small Tarawa task force into the region in order to quickly seize the intiative and grab a foothold on the island before a larger follow up battlegroup arrives on scene to push the Chinese off of the island.
Their first intent will be to seize and hold the key airbase at Basa to allow further reinforcements to be flown in. The US does not have a huge force with which to perform this task, but their troops commanders are determined to succeed and peel back the Chinese attempt to move the nuclear threat ever closer to their homeland.

Three French journalists working in the Ivory Coast, investigating government corruption, were arrested five weeks ago on charges of espionage. France had been using diplomatic pressure to get them released, but ten days ago the men were brutally murdered by other prisoners.
France has learned that the killings were actually ordered by the government of the Ivory Coast. In response, France has decided to punish the Ivory Coast by destroying three of its offshore oil rigs.
During the crisis, relations between the Ivory Coast and Algeria have warmed significantly. Algeria has been especially outspoken in its criticism of France, saying the European nation is deliberately using the situation as an opportunity for imperialistic adventure, and has promised assistance to its "brother in the struggle against E.U. aggression."
More disturbing than the rhetoric, however, are intelligence reports that Algeria has moved some aircraft to the Ivory Coast. Furthermore, an Algerian submarine has been spotted off the western coast of Sierra Leone, heading south.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the Caribbean Basin battleset.
The death of Manuel Marulanda, the founder and longtime leader of the narco terrorist group FARC, in early 2008 spelled the beginning of the end of its insurgent activities in Colombia. Although FARC had been historically resilient and was still in possession of considerable resources, Bogota and Washington seized this opportunity to further weaken the organization. Previous clandestine efforts by Venezuela to provide financial and military support to FARC were fully exposed, much to the embarrassment of the regime in Caracas. Within a few short years, the combined efforts of the USA and Colombia had reduced FARC to a mere shadow of its former self and democracy in Colombia was thriving as a result. When an American Congressional delegation was sent to Colombia to investigate and report back on the success of their efforts, unhappy neighbors saw an opportunity to dampen the celebrations.

China has weighed in by leasing one of its newer frigates to Pakistan as a trial- but it will be a trial by fire. India has unwisely chosen to attack our country. Critical wartime supplies are approaching Indian ports. As our naval forces are unlikely to prevail against overwhelming odds engaging the Indian navy directly, you are instructed to locate and destroy all commercial vessels approaching India.

The time is the present, and the Russians have taken advantage of NATO and US overextension in central Asia and the Middle East to settle some old scores in Scandanavia. Sweden and Finland have reached a settlement already, and will be no help. Norway is crumbling fast, but can still offer some help. A small amphibious group was sent to Spitzbergen some time ago to create a military presence at the seed bank there, but the rapid Russian advance requires their safe withdrawal. Get them back into friendly waters, and do some damage to Russian plans on the way if possible. Loadouts and formations may be altered as necessary, and you may operate aircraft from any base.

In the summer of 2019 Iran's nuclear weapons program was finally about to bear fruit. Israel used nukes to halt it. Outraged, the world imposed a complete embargo on Israel. The United States decided to break the embargo, by force if necessary.

Meanwhile in the US short of CVN's after the destruction of the Pacific Fleet the USN takes some of its mothballed BB's and convets them to carriers to fill a much needed role. After a bloody battle to retake Guam that cost nearly 50,000 lives the U.S has mustered a force to soften up Japan and parts of the USSR for the following invasion force of mainly civ ships due to the lack of true amphib ships.. Best estimates for the oil in the gulf to last no more than 6 months have forced the US to move the timeline for an attack on Japan up

This scenario explores the ability of the Royal Navy to control the GIUK gap with minimal assistance from other EU nations. In the days of "wooden ships and iron men" a British officer would command his gun deck crew to "hold fast" and endure the first enemy broadside with discipline while holding fire until closing into killing range. Colombian Hat Dance
A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the HCDA battleset.
Two terrorist attacks in Mexico City, which claimed the lives of 37 people, are blamed on radicals based in Colombia. The terrorist base has been located, but Colombia has refused to take action against the terrorists. No one is entirely sure why; some believe Colombian officials are concerned about reprisals.
Colombia has declared it will not tolerate a violation of its territory, even if it is to pursue terrorists. As one member of the Colombian government said, "These criminals are on Colombian soil and we will deal with them, when and how we see fit."
Mexico has gotten tired of waiting for the Colombians to take action. They have moved ships and troops into the region and are preparing to attack the terrorist base. In addition, the United States, which has called for a U.N. condemnation of Colombia for its failure to go after the terrorists, has offered support to Mexico.

The North Atlantic Council (NAC) has authorized a multinational air/sea/land exercise centered in the North & Norwegian Sea areas, code-named NORTHERN FORGE. This replaces annual NORTHERN EAGLE exercises, which had been held between NATO & Russia and were suspended following the Russian intervention in Georgia. By excluding the Russians and expanding the exercise to include as many NATO members as possible it is intended to demonstrate NATO resolve and strength on Russia's doorstep. The Blue force, based in the UK, consists of forces from the US, UK, Canada, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, and Italy while the Red force, based in Norway, is made up of forces from Norway, France, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania.

The battle for Norway has been going on for roughly a week now.
European and Russian forces have managed to capture more than half of Norway so far. The remaining Norwegian forces fled to the southern part of the country, surrounded and fighting on all fronts.
US reinforcements have started flying in to Norway 72 hours ago.
The first US-European air battle occured 12 hours ago.
The invasion and occupation of Poland is nearing its end, as Russian and German forces have met at the outskirts of Warsaw. Upon completion of this operation more European and Russian forces will be available for redeployment.
With US strength in Norway increasing as fresh personnel and material arrive, a major conflict between the newly founded Euro-Russian-Federation and US-Norwegian forces is bound to take place.

War between NATO and Russia has begun. As Russia is the agressor, its forces are prepared for war while NATO only has its routine patrols active. Russia is trying to conquer Reykjavik and Orland. NATO must obstruct this Russian operation.
NATO must try to destroy as many ships and subs as it can. Also it must prohibit Russian amphibious forces from reaching Reikjavik or Orland.
US forces: A carrier task force is travelling from USA to UK, so it can appear at any location. Two submarine wolfpacks are sailing near Iceland. USAF, US Navy, and US Marine Corps have forces at Reykjavik.
UK forces: There are two carrier task forces in the Norwegian Sea. Also, the British have two submarine wolfpacks at the zone.
Norway forces: Norwegian air forces are placed at Orland. There is also a surface battlegroup and a submarine wolfpack.

This scenario is a tribute to The Sixth Battle by Barrett Tillman.
Several large Soviet battle groups, now operating under the banner of the Union of Eurasian Republics (UER), have assembled off the coast of South Africa. Their intention is to force a change of power in the Republic of South Africa (RSA), into one that favors the African National Congress (ANC) and, indirectly, the Front Line States (FLS) of Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The UER has cut a deal with the ANC and FLS to form a cartel that would extend to all of the RSA’s resources, including uranium. Hard line regimes in the client states of Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam have pledged their assistance. The UER and its allies in the region have overwhelming firepower, and the South Africans stand virtually no chance without American intervention.
The elderly US Navy carrier USS Ranger is the only NATO carrier in the Indian Ocean, and it can count on little support from other friendly forces. The Ranger battle group has been planning for several days the best way to attack the UER carriers, plotting and wargaming several possible options, and now they think they have found a winning idea.

This scenario is a RED side sequel to my earlier scenario, Sixth Battle, which of course is a tribute to a favorite novel of mine, The Sixth Battleby Barrett Tillman. Although some effort has been expended atrecreating the battle depicted in that book, I have also taken variedsome of the events and players to make a workable Harpoon scenario. Our amphibious landings in the RSA will be supported by airstrikes from the carriers. The South Africans stand virtually no chancewithout American intervention. Now is our time to strike.

Let’s Go to War - WestPac
What if China carried out its threat to attack Taiwan? What if North Korea launched an offensive against South Korea? What if an reinvigorated Russia was complicit with both aggressors? What if these conflicts happened at the same time? This scenario examines the hypothetical worst case scenario, the stuff of nightmares for WestPac war planners.
Following the brutal crackdown in Tibet and the subsequent boycott of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing by many Western nations, the PRC entered a time of what many considered a period of awakening. It was thought that maybe these were the last throes of Chinese Communist Party, and that the emergence of democracy was finally within grasp. Ultimately it proved to be just a dream. The PRC's attack against Taiwan was sudden and absolutely vicious. Rather than commit the bulk of its valuable naval and air forces to the battle, the PRC unleashed a terrifying bombardment of short range ballistic missiles. This, of course, had been expected, but the sheer ferocity of the missile attack was not, nor was the use of a new and deadly nerve agent. Caught unprepared, Taiwan had no chance.
To make matters worse, North Korea reversed its decision to withdraw from a policy of nuclear brinkmanship. A previously unknown nuclear processing facility was discovered, revealed and then flaunted by Pyongyang, together with an array of crude nuclear weapons delivery systems. When the South Koreans and Americans railed against this dangerous turn of events, and threatened response, the DPRK did not hesitate. A withering assault was thrown across the DMZ within days, and Washington took no chances. Select low level nuclear strikes were made against certain North Korean targets, decapitating and eliminating the DPRK atomic arsenal.
Just when it was believed things could not get any uglier, the nationalists in Moscow announced their support for the forced reunification of the PRC and ROC, and complained loudly and bitterly against the American nuclear pre-emption. The Russian support for Beijing and the opposition against Washington was not only political, however, it was military.

Failsafe - Bering Strait Battleset.
Tensions with the Soviet Union are at an all time high. The President and the Joint Chiefs have just ordered Defense Condition 2 (DEFCON 2), as it is believed that an attack by the USSR may be imminent. Intelligence reports and analysis indicate that if it comes, it will occur sometime within the next forty-eight (48) hours.
In preparation to meet the threat, Strategic Air Command (SAC) has launched a previously unannounced Giant Bracket exercise, directing the forward deployment of elements of the 97th Bomb Wing to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Its aircraft (primarily a force of B-52 bombers) are now operating there in conjunction with other supporting USAF units.
In the event that National Command Authority (NCA) orders Defense Condition 1 (DEFCON 1), which will be a confirmation of an impending Soviet attack, SAC assets are directed to immediately take up their fail safe positions and stand by for further orders.

A country has established a small air base along the northern coast line and is striking Australian bases. While intended to play as blue, you can play as red too although the defences are marginal so it should be a walk over.

Commerce raiding or guerre de course is a naval strategy of attacking an opponent's commercial shipping rather than contending for control of the seas with its naval forces. The objective is to make the war too expensive for the opponent to continue it. Usually, commerce raiding is chosen by the weaker naval power who has little chance to succeed against the naval forces of its opponent.

A Battleset for Harpoon Classic Commanders' Edition
It is 1988. South Africa is still governed by President Botha, who symbolizes the Apartheid regime. The country is shaken by riots and a state of emergency is declared. South Africa´s neighbours are waiting for a chance to overthrow the Apartheid-Regime in Pretoria.
Meanwhile, the Glasnost Era between the US and the USSR ends abruptly. A few days after the Moscow Summit in May/June, Gorbachev is ousted by a Communist Coup. All hopes for an end of the Cold War have gone to pieces within hours. The new strong man is Secretary Ligatschow. He vows to re-establish "law and order" and to strengthen Communism all over the world.
The US Government led by President Reagan is caught by surprise. US forces have to be quickly re-positioned and prepared for what may come. But where will the USSR start to re-establish its tight grip? The Politburo chooses South Africa. Large parts of the Red Fleet are already in this area. South Africa is an outlaw in the Western World because of its Apartheid regime. Its strategic importance is obvious. Its neighbours will support any attack on the Regime. Thus, the Soviets draw their plan.
By chance there is one US Carrier Battlegroup in the area. And so an epic battle starts.

Sources confirmed today that the suicide truck bomb that killed 28 and injured more than 100 American soldiers last week was tied to the recent string of terrorist attacks against American targets. The attack, said one government official, fit the profile of several Middle Eastern groups and is thought to be sponsored by several countries hostile to the American presence in the Persian Gulf.
In Paris, the French Foreign Minister was asked if the current attacks against the Americans would cause the French government to reconsider the US sanctions against Iran and Libya. He said abruptly "No terrorism is a world wide problem," and that punishing French and other European companies because America is unpopular in those markets was absurd. He went on To say that "It's time America came down off her high horse and joined the World community as an equal and stop pretending to be the world's Father Figure."
During a UN meeting the US Secretary of State took the podium and issued a terse response to the French Foreign Minister. "Terrorism exists in the world today in its current form because continental powers are too timid to respond to the open hostilities of the Arab world. France in particular should be ashamed that it continues to expand its trade with rogue nations such as Iran, Iraq and Libya." The Secretary closed his speech by saying that the US would seek out and punish those responsible for attacks against Americans no matter where they live, and any country harboring, protecting or supporting these fugitives would also feel the weight of American justice.

The world was shocked last week when tensions between Indonesia and Thailand exploded into violence. Indonesia, claiming that Thai fishing vessels had illegally entered its fisheries, sank two trawlers and fired warning shots at a third. Thailand has declared that, as a result of these "vicious and criminal acts of oceanic terrorism," a state of war exists between the two nations.

The Kurile Islands have been a point of contention between Japan and the Soviet Union since the end or World War Two. Even following the collapse of the Soviet state, the area remains disputed. Japan claims that the southern most of the Islands, which were not specifically covered in the Treaty of San Francisco of 1951, are rightfully Japanese Territory. Negotiations have yet to settle this dispute.

The year is 2014, and the world is at war. Israel, Syria, and Iran are in ruins after a series of nuclear exchanges. Egypt and Turkey have remained neutral. Russia has taken advantage of the situation by allying with the Sicilan mafia, which has been the de facto government since the Italian revolution of 2012. Libya and Tunisia are also in the Russian sphere. The UK sent a CVBG, with American assitance, to assist Israel, in vain. This group must now return through the straits of Malta.

The time is the near future and the world is at war. The collapse of the US economy in the crash of 2012 has led to opportunism all over the world. Venezuela has extended basing rights to Russian ships and aircraft, to exert pressure on a prostrate USA. Russia, with its newly resurgent navy, is sending naval units around Cape Horn to take advantage of this situation. Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, honoring their relationship with the US, have stated that they will contest this passage. This scenario explores the ability of 2nd/3rd world nations to defend themselves against larger opponents.

A scenario in which you must seek out and destroy enemy in order to allow safe passage of a relatively weak supply convoy. Expect sea surface and subsurface vessels and land units to resist your passage. You will need to primarily use the aircraft from Australian and Singaporean airfields for this purpose.
Singapore has been under pressure from neighbouring countries to drop the close association it has formed with Australia and to add to their efforts to create a first order industrial power.
While there have been no hostilities a recent natural disaster has left Singapore in need of supplies which are being sent from Australia, an initial delivery of armaments has been delivered by two Hercules which are still on ground at Singapore (AFa).

A Nice Little Shootout

Joint NATO Baltic exercises "Lead Barrel" went as planned. Russia voiced its objections against NATO military operations in Lithuania/Latvia/Estonia but no one expected any serious escalation. Russian recon assets closely monitored NATO units but without any provocative activities.
After achieving all objectives NATO declared exercises as finished and begun withdrawing its assets. Naval units left Gulf of Riga, split into two SAG's and sailed south to Gdansk. Air units stationed in Poland, Germany and Denmark begun moving out to their home bases.
Everything changed within last 20 minutes.

In 1969, thousands of Chinese workers began arriving at the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam and immediately set to work on the TAZARA project, a national railway that would stretch deep into the East African interior and would not only connect remote rural communities but also drive across southern Tanzania into the Zambian copper belt. Back then Tanzanian national leaders had first approached Western nations to assist with the project, but one after another, the USA, Great Britain, and even the United Nations and the Soviet Union, all turned them down. The Communist Chinese, however, seized the opportunity, and now, nearly 50 years later, the investment was paying off in a big way. Large deposits of uranium have been discovered near the northern end of Lake Nyasa, and the People's Republic of China is keen to realize on its long term investment. Unfortunately, the area is also the subject of a longstanding boundary dispute between Tanzania and its western neighbor, Malawi. Perhaps repeating the transgressions of the Western colonial powers more than a hundred years before, the Chinese are not about to permit anything to stand in the way of their plans for strategic economic gain.
In response to rising tensions between Malawi and Tanzania, the PRC has moved significant military forces into Tanzania. Officially they report an invitation by the government in Dodoma to safeguard the joint economic interests of Tanzania and the PRC in the mineral deposits near Mbeya. However, the force is much larger than that one would ordinarily expect for simple security. It is now reported that a small force of Malawi Army regulars were discovered beyond the border control post and that they have been summarily executed by the Chinese. Moreover, movement of refugees in the Chitipa and Karonga regions of Malawi is reported subject to Chinese scrutiny and approval, such that very few people are being permitted to cross the border. Survey and drilling equipment has even been spotted in some remote parts of Karonga.

In the first scenario of this multi part campaign, called Threshold, we examined what happened when the Israelis carried out a preemptive air strike against what they believed to be a Syrian nuclear weapons research facility. In the aftermath of that action, full scale war has now broken out between Syria and Israel, and Iran is vowing to join the cause against the Zionist aggressors.
This second scenario will continue to examine the possible result of a single aimed pre-emptive strike, and the resulting ever widening conflagration.
Blue Orders:
1.0. SITREP:
The Syrians have launched a full scale counter-attack in response to our successful preemptive strike against their recently reconstructed nuclear facility. As expected, the Syrians and the Iranians have also engineered a new wave of unrest and terrorist activity in both the Gaza Strip and Beirut. Fortunately, we were well prepared for that eventuality, and much of the terrorist activity in those locations has been suppressed, at least for the time being.
Our strike on the MV Al Hasan, a merchant ship delivering nuclear materials from Iran, has been deemed a success. At last report, she was burning and partially capsized in the harbor at Tartus. Unfortunately, the Russians are reporting having received minor damage to their nuclear powered battlecruiser Petr Velikiy, which was also moored there. Our pilots swear they did not target or unintentionally hit the Russian warship, but she is nevertheless reporting damage, and has been observed leaving Tartus streaming a column of thick smoke. Suffice to say, Moscow is protesting loudly and both the Syrians and Iranians are taking advantage of this unfortunate development.
Tehran is pledging full military support for the Syrians and is requesting Russian military support to defend Islamic nations in the region from Zionist hostile action. Intelligence indicates that Iranian military forces are mobilizing, including a sharp rise in activity at known ballistic missile bases.

In the first and second scenarios of this multi part campaign, we saw what happened when the Israelis carried out a preemptive air strike against a Syrian nuclear research facility, and the ferocity of the combined Syrian-Iranian response.
In this third instalment in the series, the crisis has deepened and expanded into a regional war in which old superpowers threaten to become involved.
1.0. SITREP:
First the good news. The clash with the Syrian air force has resolved largely in our favor, and the surprise raid on the Iranian nuclear facilities near Esfahan have been deemed a success. We also believe, but cannot confirm, that the Syrians and Iranians have exhausted their ballistic missile inventory for the time being. Our effort, however, has spent much of our air force's immediately available capability and we are attempting to reconstitute the force.
Now the bad news. Despite heavy losses, Syrian ground forces have crossed into the Golan Heights once again. An enemy armored group has seized the Israeli settlement at Neve Ativ and appears to be digging in nearby. Much of our army is preoccupied in Gaza and in providing disaster relief in the wake of missile attacks on civilian centers, and we have been slow to respond in the Golan.
Moreover, it appears that the Russians are moving to support the Syrian offensive. So called Russian peacekeepers are arriving in force aboard Il-76 airlifters at Latakia and Damascus, and there are reports of Russian air force squadrons also arriving in concert with them. There are also rumours of similar movements in Iran, but these are as yet unconfirmed.
Also, the Russian navy battlecruiser Petr Velikiy has rounded Cyprus and appears to be returning to eastern Mediterranean waters. Her specific intentions are unknown at this time.
The Americans have advised, via back channels, that they are turning around a carrier group near Yemen and sending it back up the Red Sea. They have not, as yet, promised direct support but it appears likely they will offer same.

Thus far, this multi part campaign has witnessed Israel carry out a preemptive strike in defense of the nation, only to ignite a wider regional conflict which resulted in the destruction of both Nevatim and Damascus by nuclear fire. Russia has condemned the action and come to the aid of Syria and Iran, moving troops into both countries to help defend against them against what they have called Israel's bald faced nuclear aggression. Though continuing to put up a vigorous defense, Israel is clearly out muscled by the combined power of its enemies. Though late arriving on the scene, an American carrier strike force is now pushing north through the Red Sea.
1.0. SITREP:
In response to the terror bombing of the Knesset and the nuclear attack against Nevatim, we have responded with strategic weapons against both Damascus and Tehran. Though the strike on Damascus was a success, the Jericho III ICBM launched against Tehran failed for some reason that remains unknown.
Russia has stepped up its attacks on our airfields and has moved substantial forces into Lebanon and the Golan Heights. Steady streams of Russian transport aircraft are flying into Latakia (ZZa) and Hama (ZUa), and more resupply is believed to be arriving from the Black Sea. The situation on the northern frontier is desperate. Fortunately Washington is finally responding, and the Truman carrier strike group is now heading to the region.

Korea '51

Situated on and around the Korean Penninsular dating early 1950s this is loosley based on the Korean War. As in that conflict there isn't a lot of naval action, mostly (in this scenario) air to air and air to ground action. While ground to ground action isn't an intended feature of Harpoon, it is also available if you wish to pursue it.
Your primary mission is to protect your bases on the Korean Peninsula. You must destroy or severely damage land units that are expected to advance towards your positions and to reduce enemy fighter numbers. At least one enemy base should be targeted to either reduce sea transport links vital to the enemy or to reduce their ability to launch air attacks.
USSR and Chinese aircraft are known to be operating in the region and are suspected to be assisting the North Korean forces. However, they should only be engaged if they show definite signs of intended aggression. Aircraft operating out of Japenese bases are considered highly valued and should return to home base between sorties.
Additional limited support is available from two carrier groups. For purposes of self defence their aircraft resources should return directly from each mainland mission. Although the enemy equipment is dated they have significant resources, don't expect to be home for Christmas.

This was in the begining a test scenario to test unguided air-to-air rockets, basically in the F-94C Starfire, and his effectiveness (I was very dubtious about the capability in the game of a unguided rocket to hit in a flying airplane). But now I think it can be very simple introductory scenario to Harpoon HCE, mostly for old time interception and worth of release it, with the flavour of the early 1950s.
The situation report is very simple, your're at the command of the 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron near 1954, temporarily deployed from Komaki AFB, Japan, to South Korea (and very reinforced in strength), and equipped with the new Lockheed F-94C Starfire (derived from the F-80/T-33), all-weather interceptor exclusively armed with unguided air-to-air rockets (the famous 2.75" FFAR Mk4 Mighty Mouse), to defend Seoul from upcoming streams of communist bombers breaking the 1953 ceasefire !

Brush Wars Scenario 01 - Business As Usual

The front lines of the Global War on Terror have always been intermixed with regional security and stability issues. In the Southern Philippines, the local government is still battling with decades-old adversaries; remainders of Communist rebels and militas intent on an Islamic breakaway territory. Add to that mix new players such as Al-Qaeda and drug-smuggling rings and you've got a heady brew waiting to boil over. Since 2002, the US Navy has provided soft and hard support in the southern conflict, but keeping a low-key profile. Case in point: US forces consisting of medical, construction and civil affairs elements have been dispatched from the main city of Zamboanga to an outpost on Basilan Island. Providing humanitarian aid effort to win over the local populace is a critical part of the COIN strategy. If successful, the campaign will remove another base of support for anti-government forces. Securing Basilan opens the way to the rest of the island chain leading south to Sabah where numerous terror camps have started to pop up.
This is a relatively low-tech scenario from an organic fires perspective (no SAMs or SSMs), but it reflects the reality of assymetrical warfare. One side enjoys a sensor and communication advantage. The other enjoys numbers and ability to strike and fade at will. Managing and preserving your combat power while applying maximum effort to the opponent's vulnerabilities is the key to victory.

Coral Sea
The battle for the Coral Sea was at the time said by many prominent Australians to have saved our skin. Later available evidence makes that uncertain but in any case it was interesting from an historical warfare point (first sea battle without surface forces facing off) and a turning point in the "Pacific War".
Here we have a scenario structured on the Coral Sea situation, as best as I can.
Allied intelligence has intercepted Japanese communications and determined that a strike force is headed out of the Pacific to attack Port Moresby. This is part of an overall strategy to rid America from the Pacific and allow the Japanese to move through out the region. Port Moresby must be held.

The year is 2013 and the balance of power has shifted. The threat of Chinese liquidation of American debt has left the Chinese as the main military power in the Pacific, and the battle lines in the Mideast are hardening as Chinese weapons sales are now unchecked. Iran, after many delays in its nuclear wepons programs, has ordered and paid for a package of thermonuclear warheads for its existing missiles. Israel has promised that the delivery of these warheads will result in a nuclear attack on Iran. Pakistan, with the withdrawal of American support, seems inclined to support the delivery of these weapons. India, with a divided legislature and a shortage of modern weapons, will have to interrupt this delivery.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the Middle East Battleset.
It is October 1984. A financial crisis in Latin America has led to huge loan defaults in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. American banks, who had heavily financed the development efforts in Latin America, have been caught by surprise and are now in a serious slide. Washington took drastic steps and imposed a freeze upon banking transactions across the nation.
Then, a week ago, a terrorist bomb in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, claimed the life of the US ambassador and numerous civilians. At the same time, a guerilla movement believed to have ties to that terror attack and backed by the Soviet Union, toppled the Omani government in the wake of massive financial losses in its banking sector.
American peacekeepers have moved into Saudi Arabia after rebellious elements of the Saudi army moved to occupy the holy city of Mecca. It is the largest commitment of American troops since the Vietnam war. Moscow has bitterly criticised the American presence in the Persian Gulf, calling it a grave act of provocation.
Three days ago, the new regime in Oman allied with Tehran to impose a toll on tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz. All tanker traffic in the Gulf has now come to a stop.

I've searched the Internet to no avail . . . How *exactly* do I incorporate the PlayersDB files into the Harpoon file structure on my Mac (OSX 10.6.5). Some of the file names / extensions match up while others do not (e.g. *.res vs *.rsrc). The folder names are slightly different (e.g. Battleset vs Battlesets) and there isn't a "DAT2" folder in my Mac Harpoon installation while the PlayersDB comes with DAT2. I just purchased Harpoon for Mac today (04Dec2010).
Anyway, I really have searched diligently and Googled this to death. Did I miss a FAQ or a post somewhere?

I am a bit confused by your situation and would like to clarify a few things.
You are posting in a thread about the Harpoon Classic line of games that have a game screen that looks like this:

Is this the version of the game you are trying to get to work with the PlayersDB? If so, the answer to your problem is easy. The PlayersDB is made only to work with the Harpoon3 version that look like this:

and not the Harpoon Classic line of games.
If you are playing the Harpoon3 version of the game, then there are ways to get things to work. The scenarios work, but the PlayersDB installer was created to accommodate the file arrangement of the PC. I do not have a Mac so I am unaware of a different arrangement for Mac users as opposed to PC users (i.e. the file arrangement). I think that the simplest solution is to just run the PlayersDB installer to any empty folder. (After all, it is simply one big Zip file. It doesn't alter anything.) Then, you just move the various *.SCN, *.RES, *.DAT components out of that folder to their associated places in your installation.
For example, if the installer creates the folder, "Battlset" with all the *.DSD and *.SCN files within and your Mac installation has a folder named "Battleset" instead (with *.DSD and *.SCN files inside), you just move all the stuff over to it.

This is series of three HCE scenarios, intended primarily for beginning and intermediate HCE players. They are small, and playable from RED or BLUE in each case. I hope that these will serve as a training tool for beginners, and an overview of the relative capabilities of American, French, Russian, and British carrier groups around 2014 or so for more advanced players. "Historical" accuracy is a goal, so Tomcats, Backfires, Vikings, etc. are absent in this collection. A guide to the included aircraft and weapons derived from the HCDB 101213 database, giving weapon speeds, ESM details, etc. is included with each scenario. Please use this database as older ones will cause inaccurate play balance.
This package will be followed in time with much more difficult scenarios playable by one side only.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition (HCE) scenario for the Middle East Battleset and the HCE Cold War (HCCW) Database.
The Battle of Latakia was a small naval battle fought on 7 October 1973, during the Yom Kippur War. It was the first naval engagement to involve an exchange of anti-ship surface to surface missiles and in which electronic warfare played a principal role. The Syrians were equipped with Soviet supplied Project 183 Komar and Project 205 Osa class missile boats armed with the P-15 Termit (NATO SS-N-2 Styx), a weapon that had already stung Israel almost exactly six years earlier, with the loss of the destroyer INS Eilat on 20 October 1967. The Styx had twice the range of the Israeli Gabriel, and a much larger warhead. To meet the threat, the Israelis would need every once of guile, wit and and courage that they could muster.

This scenario is inspired in the current (January 2011) discussions about the Littoral Control Ship, her future, her future missions and her future fate. In a surprising decission with the absurd allegation of budgetary eficiency, on November 2010 the US Navy decides to purchase a great number of LCS, when yet are not resolved a myriad of issues relatives to the ship design, concept and tasks. The US Navy will purchase ten ships of each one of the concurrent designs (added to the previous four), and not declare a winner neither select only one design for series shipbuilding. In particular this scenario is motived when in some blog someone asked a few days ago: "How a group of LCS can stand before a Chinese Sovrenmenny ?".
Historical background (Hypothetical):
The near future, summer 2015. A constant succession of new challenges in a fast changing world. At the other extreme of the world Argentina has seized the Falklands/Malvinas Islands on August 2011, and the failure of the reduced British forces sent without air support to recover the islands has motivated a great lack of credibility on the Western military capacities. In Europe, the Islamic Supremacy groups are forcing the European Union governments to be aside of the global issues. Europe is not already a player. Only very reduced US forces are keeping a credible operational readiness in the Western countries. China sees on it an opportunity to expose clearly and affirm what is his strategic influence zone, the countries from which he needs to import raw strategic materials and other resources, and the external markets that considers as of his exclusive property for import and export of manufactured goods, and in those China will not tolerate the intromission of powers strange to Asian countries. His strategic influence zone is very similar in extension and configuration to the previous Japanese Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, and it will motivate the same type of troubles in the Pacific Ocean.
And remember, the intelligence estimates ever can be erroneous ...

The sovereignty dispute over the Kurils has continued to simmer for decades, and now looks to boil over with the Japanese making moves reminiscent of the Karafuto Prefecture.

Spring 2012: As a last backslash to the 2011 turmoils in the North Africa and Middle East Muslim World, in Morocco the moderate laicist Government of National Unity of Abdelhadi Boucetta (With the decisive support of his intellectual and glamorous wife) replacing for less than a year the deposed King Mohammed VI (Exiled to the ONA-Managem luxury mining facilities in Equatorial Guinea), has been overthrowed by the Islamic extremists after a long and painful agony.
The new Moroccan islamist Government of the now named Muslim Brotherhood in the Islamic Maghreb, counts with the opposition of a important sector of the Moroccan people, basically the most literate and pro-Western sector. Preventing a possible unrest, remembering the internal public reaction to the ill-fated Moroccan invasion of the Spanish Perejil Island on 2002, the new Islamic government has fixed as national target for amagalmation of the public opinion the seizure of the North-African Spanish Automous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, a long-time Moroccan claim. As both cities are very vulnerable without room for a possible in depth military defence, and the other new strategic targets and ambitions of the Spanish Government are now well known and the last years was retiring troops and police corps from both Ceuta and Melilla, there is a window of vulnerability the Islamic faction has well exploited.
With a Moroccan Police and Secret Service organized human waves of thousands of desesperate low-class Moroccan people jumping, breaking through, bending and for last tearing apart the divisory fence between both cities and Morocco, in face of the passivity of the Spanish security forces to avoid the loss of human lives (Action and reaction very similar to the Moroccan Green March occupation of the Spanish Sahara on November 1975, against a confuse Spanish government when Franco layed dying), the Moroccans had de facto occuppied both cities. Facing a not-return case, the Spanish citizens are assembled by the authorities in the cities ports, waiting for maritime evacuation (Only Melilla counts with a very small airport).
Remembering the success of the current Somalia pirates, and the success of the traditional historical activity of the Barbary Coast pirates (Only finished with the French conquest in North Africa in the XIX Century, after the previous famous actions of the USN and USMC), and for enforce more the moral of the Moroccan People, the Islamic government has decided to prevent the evacuation and the loss of richess and qualified manpower. In the tradition of their ancestors the Barbary pirates, they want capture them for ransom, or if not destroy and sunk the merchant ships carring them, to shown the weakness of the Spanish government and his incapatility to protect his own nationals.
In Spain, after the 2012 polls, the unstable socialist government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his long-time Defence Minister Carmen Chacon, has had to suffer the pressure of the peripherical nationalistic parties of his coalition of government, and to lend to his desires. After the resignation of General Felix Sanz Roldan as head of the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia and his replacement by a puppet civilian, nothing can be opposed to the nationalistic parties desires. As their first demand is the recuperation of the old territories of the Kingdom of Aragon, most of the surface forces of the Spanish Navy and a great number of his air assets are deployed in forward bases in the Balearic Islands and in the Central Mediterranean. As a result of it, facing the worst-case possible scenario, only limited forces are available for escorting the evacuation of Spanish refugees from Ceuta and Melilla.

In April 1975, with the North Vietnamese tightening their stranglehold on South Vietnam and their army closing on Saigon, the Americans assembled a large naval force to assist in the evacuation of American civilians and Vietnamese refugees deemed to be at risk when the entire country eventually fell to the NVA. In this scenario, the Soviets launch a much more overt effort to support the North in the closing days of their campaign, seeking to ensure their own grip on Cam Ranh Bay and the vital sea lanes of the Western Pacific. The administration in Washington, red faced from the Watergate scandal and looking for diversions, turns to face the Communist threat once more.

Having become engulfed in the protests and demonstrations cascading across Middle Eastern nations, Libya is now in full revolt. Benghazi has fallen to, some might say been liberated by, the anti-government movement which is sweeping west toward Tripoli. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, leader of this North African country for more than 40 years, refuses to leave power and is instead tightening his grip. Although many have abandoned the regime, a considerable number of forces still loyal to Gaddafi have been conducting arrests, abductions, and killings to try and stop the tides of change. It is reported that Gaddafi is promising wealth and position to local officials, political leaders and armed forces commanders in an effort to guarantee their support and obedience. With the military now taking an active role in suppressing the rebels, launching air strikes and ground attacks, the country is slipping rapidly into civil war.

A submarine-only scenario without other diversions, inspired by some old scenario booklets of the Harpoon 3 series, good for testing submarines, submarine tactics, sonars, torpedoes and other ASW weapons. Perhaps the Western submarines are numerically over-represented, but it's reflecting the original and very reduced in number of submarines paper scenarios. Also it's configured as a vanilla scenario for lazy players wanting to enjoy a simple pastime, and with the aim of replayability thanks to the aleatority of the starting positions and of the units presence or not presence. I think it's playable at the 10 or even 30 minutes time compression ... before any contact.
Scenario Background:
At the start of the WWIII in the North Atlantic on 1989, the bad weather and also the political uncertitude precludes the use of air and surface assets. To keep low the social unrest because the war, the opening naval actions are limitated to the discrete submarine operations, in a situation remembrance of the 1939 Phony War and of the 1994 Tom Clancy's novel Debt of Honor (where both Japan and the United States are in war against the other, but both governments are occulting the fact to his respective public opinions to prevent the collapse of the stock markets), but these underwater actions are not less decisive or murderous than a full open war.

And reflecting all the knowledge adquired the last years in some matters, as about Soviet/Russian platforms and forces composition.
The scenario reflects the start of the conventional WWIII as was forecasted for about 1989, the first movements in the Mediterranean Sea to determinate the early control of the sea lanes, and the first days of open combat after the previous period of Phoney War.

A month after the start of the Third World War between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, most of the Red Banner Northern Fleet has long since departed from its berths on the Kola Peninsula. But with many of the initial, devastating sea battles already fought, surviving Soviet surface ships and submarines are compelled to return to their bases to refuel and rearm. NATO has ordered the entrances to these enemy naval bases to be mined. The mission falls to the American attack submarine USS Providence and its French counterpart, Rubis.
This scenario is loosely based on the High Tide scenario Mining Mission for Harpoon 4.

The Panama canal is a vital sea route that is vulnerable to attack both on the structures of the canal and shipping in the restricted waters both to the east and west. In this scenario (minimum database HCDA-110225) we investigate such attacks.
You are to protect the Panama canal and approaching shipping. Recent events have indicated that mines have been laid in the waters of the Pacific ocean approach and the USA has urgently sent you specialized mine hunting equipment with further almost at hand. Canal equipment, in particular the locks, are quite vulnerable and only minor damage will greatly inhibit shipping transit.

In 2019 Asia has taken on a new political appearance. During the decade Australia has produced wealth from the establihment of a significant carbon trade (Carbon Reduction Trading Scheme) and has used that wealth to impose significant influence on surrounding countries, Asian countries in particular, and has formed (and controlled) the now powerfull Greater Australasian Economic Convention (GAEC). Only Taiwan has remained outside of GAEC although it is strongly held that there is significant co-operation and that its non-member status is only at the official level.
GAEC has slowly restricted much of China's requirements for expansion, particularly in respect of energy, with much of the resources available to GAEC going to the individually small, but collectively large, GAEC member countries.
Current tension is high after a month of strong diplomatic actions by both sides and GAEC conducting Naval exercises within the South China Sea (refered to by GAEC as the Viet-Malay Sea).

In 2015 the Chinese Government decides that American resolve regarding Taiwan is weakening. The crash of 2012 has reduced US defence spending radically, and a timid and isolationist administration in Washington will likely be poorly prepared. Japan and Korea, having ejected all american forces, will not be a factor. To eliminate the need for an invasion, it has been decided that a preemptive strike on Andersen AFB is necessary. We are certain that we will achieve suprise.

It is Christmas 2012. Royal Navy ADM Robert Lawrence (YOU) has a problem. Iran has closed the Straits of Hormuz in retaliation for the Israeli/US attack on its nuclear weapons program. Most of the Gulf States have expressed their dissapproval and will wait this out. The political situation prevents the USA from helping in any overt way. The NATO anti piracy forces are the only assets available. Fortunately, you have three carriers. Unfortunately, you will have to lead from the rear, as UK defense reductions have left you with only helicopters. Deliver three supertankers to Bahrain to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf.

The coup in Russia succeeded. Not only was the President imprisoned, but also the freedom movements in Poland and the German Democratic Republic were suppressed, not with violence, but more quietly. First, they were shocked by the turmoil in the Kremlin, but soon the relations between the sides normalized because the new government in Russia seemed reasonable. They wanted a new deal with the U.S. for delivery of non-military items and US business needed new deals (under pressure from the White House to be friendlier with the East). The West German Chancellor, who was mostly a puppet for big corporations that wanted more exports to the East, met with eastern President Lisy to discuss new trade deals. He was impressed by the change of language - the new officials seemed to be more realistic and friendlier than the old guard around Honecker.
They know little of what was happening. In reality, the military planned to get back the old Soviet glory and demand what was rightfully theirs. If demand wasn't working, maybe pressure would. First, the old Finnish wound should be healed. As their demand was not really bad (a 'least' of the old territories which the Generals felt belonged to Russia), the Finns caved in to avoid a second Winter War. However, the Russians did not stop there. They wanted better protection of their northern flank. Sweden was strictly neutral and too strong, so Norway was the only option.
NATO was not prepared. It had been lulled into a state of calm by the new warm climate between the blocs, but the Home Guard was not. Unfortunately, they were few. Russian Spetsnaz and paratroops suddenly stormed key bases and the tanks came later. There were not many NATO forces in Norway. It was over quickly. The Norwegian government called a cease-fire with the terms offered by the Russians that only the northern half of the country to be occupied. The remainder became a Norwegian 'Vichy'. The few US Marines fled to Denmark with their surviving helicopters and Harriers as well as remnants of the Norwegian Air Force.
While NATO was still discussing their reaction, the Russians made their next coup, demanding free passage for all shipping from Denmark. If this demand was met, the case would be settled and there would be peace. The Danes had a resolute Prime Minister who sent Moscow a package with a letter and a bottle: "You can have this bottle of Danish beer for free, but not more."
This scenario is a re-make of the Harpoon Classic scenario Lightning2 originally written by Alpha77 (a.k.a. FrankW) for the Harpoon Designer's Series III (HDS9 Battleset). It has been re-written for Harpoon3 and the PlayersDB with the consent of the author.
