I was just coming home to willhelmshaven after an average patrol - 40ton in a VIIB - when, as i was passing the subnets and mines, i noticed a ship that looked different to the destroyer in the distance off to my starboard bow. It had the markings of a capital ship but couldnt beleive my eyes.
As i got closer i realised is a friggin hipper class heavy cruiser coming out of port!
Since i already plotted my way to the pens i left it go and geez the thing came right up beside me and my jebus it was huge compare to my little boat!

It was march '40. Can anyone tell me what its name would have been?

Tirpitz was a battleship - Bismarck's sister to be exact. I'm guessing it may have been Prinz Eugen.
So the hipper class and BS class looked the same? :o
Tirpitz:

No, in fact this one is quite visibly smaller; there's a lot of little features that distinguish them too (I'd never confuse one with the other myself, anyway).
They are based on the same essential shape and layout, though (same goes for the Scharnhorst class, too) :hmm:

Well I would say its either the Hipper or the Blucher as the Scharnhorst in the game is basically the Bismark anyway - size wise -with superstructure changes,
The Hipper took part in the norway invasion so was around Kiel area at the time
Could be the Blucher as that was sunk 9th April 1940 during the Norway assualt - Blücher sailed along with the Emden to rendezvous off Kiel with the rest of Kampfgruppe V, this comprising the heavy cruiser Lützow (originally the Panzerschiffe Deutschland), Torpedo Boats Möwe, Albatros, Kondor and the 1st Minesweeper flotilla
Couldnt be the original ( Hipper class ) Lützow. Lützow was sold to the USSR on the 11th February 1940. On the 15th April 1940 she was towed to the Ordzhonikidze ship Yard at Leningrad. She didnt have any guns till 41
The Prinz Eugen wasnt commissioned till 1st August 1940
Basically take your pick lol

One way of finding out open the mission editor and have a look if the ships named it will be in there.

I cbf going to that length to find its name. The american boats were easier to identify with the number on the side but german boats... i give up!
I know its a hipper class, but as to its name, i am without a clue. The last save i did (i do a save so often, eg. Patrol 4a, that i got to the letter j) was feb 25 and that was on the other side of scapa flow which is a couple days travel from willhelmshaven. And when in base, my in base before mission autosave says march 8th.
Any further clues?
Wow.. nice run in! Looks like he altered his course a bit to avoid you in the shot where the Sub and Ship are in it together.

@scorpius, nothing special, you will meet the scharnhorst&co. very often in kiel/wilhelmshaven during the beginning of the war... (GW 1.1)
later you can see the bismarck docked in brest sometimes... the tirpitz in the norwegian waters too of course... (but i didnt saw the tirpitz till now)

Yes i know its nothing special to you. Its just odd for me to see such a huge ship up that close to my own boat. And i just wanted to know its name.

In the game? I have seen many many capital ships in my time. Most of them british and a few german.
Just never got so close to a german one before. And without intention either.

I agree, Scorpius. I know that they're part of the Harbour Traffic Mods, but I still get a thrill when I see one. Never thought I'd feel that way seeing a big warship up close flying the Kriegsmarine flag, but I guess you just get drawn into the whole 'my navy' thing.
I love the realism this sim gives us (modded of course).
