I started playing this a few days ago and cant believe how great it is.. That said i'm sure i'm doing some major things wrong. If anyone can help me with these two things it'd be incredibly helpful.

1) With the recognition manual, when i see a ship with the periscope and click on 'ship' on the notepad it brings up the ship, sometimes there are boxes below the ship showing where hotpoints are, sometimes there are no boxes. Why do they come and go? even on the same ships.

2) I only just worked out that you don't need to aim the subs nose exactly, you can actually aim between 340 and 20 with the periscope, doh! BUT how do I work out how far ahead to aim with a moving ship..and how do I use the gyrograph meter? I assume its telling me how my sub's trajectory (if moving) will affect my aim?

Again, please be patient, I am obviously a noob. I love this game but won't get half what I could out of it until I sort these things out..specially basic aiming

Thanks alot :D

Don't worry Finbar,

I've been through this too, and (a lot) more.... ;)

Got ot this link:

Read carefully and then practice. Afterwards you'll have a strong basic and operational grammar for targeting ships.

Take care,

Do you want to use Manual Targeting? Many people here do, I simply have no skill for it and use Auto.

But just in case you think you have to use Manual, you don't. (The patches you download have an option that gives you no choice, uncheck that prior to a mission if you want to use Auto.)

And the stuff you are asking about will be done for you (as explained in the book/training exercises).

But if you want to do Manual, more power to you.

i was trying to do it in auto and move onto manual but I'm only on the training missions and I assume they are set to permanent auto because I cant find a way to stop my periscope from aumatically picking up the ship type, range, etc.

That guide looks great thanks alot. I've just been playing and it seems that while in auto you dont even need to lead the target??!! Is it all programmed into the torpedo from the mesurements automatically taken from the periscope? I had no idea and was aiming ahead of the targets.

Of course it's 'leading' it. That's what all those measurements are for. They are figuring out where the ship is going to be once the torpedo reaches said target.

While we're at it, how do I identify a ship at night? or when it's foggy if I'm playing manual?
Do I have to get like 300 meters from it?

I have no idea, really. I think the flags are very difficult to read in even good conditions. Forget about night or in bad weather.

Though, the way I learned to play, I did a lot of distance shooting. And that's not really what U-Boats did. So yeah, maybe you just have to go up to them, knock on their hull and ask, 'Are you the enemy?'
